GAA Discussion / Re: Connacht u20 Final Venue?
April 16, 2022, 05:02:00 PM
Sligo County Board Statement, the Connacht Council and TG4 come out of this disgracefully.

On Wednesday night last (13 April) we formally noted our objection to Connacht Council of the announcement that  of the Connacht Centre of Excellence as the location for the Connacht U20 final for which we had qualified minutes earlier.

This communication was immediately dismissed. Since then we have attempted to communicate the depth of feeling in Sligo on this issue to the Connacht Council and to have the game confirmed to take place in Sligo as would be the norm under the longstanding rotation for intercounty championship games in Connacht including finals.

We sought to do so in a constructive manner without unnecessary conflict and without disturbing the preparation for that game by the U20 team and by our senior teams who are involved in hurling and football championship action this weekend.

Having achieved no movement on the issue by yesterday afternoon (Friday) we sent an email to Connacht Council which confirmed formally what had been conveyed by varied informal channels over the previous 24 hours. This email has not been acknowledged.

We now find ourselves in a position where the players and management involved and our supporters are questioning why we are not saying anything publicly. Accordingly we are sharing the text of that email so that there is no ambiguity as to where we stand.

"We have reflected on the email exchange of Wednesday evening last in respect of the staging of next week's U20 championship final and the issue has been fully discussed by the players, their management and the Management Committee of Sligo GAA.

Our U20's achievement in qualifying for a Connacht final is not just based on 60 minutes of endeavour but six years together as a group that has brought a lot of pleasure to all those that follow the games in the county.

For as long as anyone participating can recall, the hosting of championship games at all grades of football in Connacht, including finals, has rotated between the counties involved, something that we are sure will be acknowledged by officials and supporters in all the other counties, including our opponents next week, Mayo. On the last occasion when Sligo played Mayo at U20  level, in 2019, the game was played in Castlebar.

Immediately after Wednesday's semi-final game, it was announced through the media that next week's final would be played at the Connacht Centre of Excellence at Bekan. Sligo GAA is a big supporter of the Bekan project. It is a critical and far-sighted piece of infrastructure that has already brought, and will continue to bring, huge benefits to the development of Gaelic games in the province generally and in each of the  counties, including our own.

Its purpose however is to support the development of the games and to add to what was there. It is  not to replace the use of existing grounds for the hosting of major games that are a core part of the fabric of every season.

It is clear that this decision has been made to facilitate television. While we greatly appreciate the value of media coverage of our games and the distinct contribution of TG4 in particular, there is no basis on which we can accept that putting the needs of a television station before the opportunity for players and supporters to enjoy a provincial final on their home ground can be justified.

We are told this decision is being made because there are lights in Bekan and not in Markievicz Park. Are we seriously now scheduling one of the biggest games of the year in the province to suit the scheduling needs of a television station? We would respectfully suggest that TG4 rearrange its schedule for the evening to accommodate the match at an earlier time. If it is unwilling to do so, it says a lot more about its commitment to support the GAA than all of the marketing and promotion we see.

We have also been told that we have to accept Bekan as the venue because this was referred to in an email issued after the Mayo Galway quarter final late on the evening of Wednesday 6 April. It would have been utterly disingenuous of us to start discussing the location of a Connacht final when we hadn't even played the semi-final and the suggestion that we should accept the location of the final as Bekan because it was in that email is simply ridiculous.

If those charged with the administration of the GAA in Connacht insist on throwing in at Bekan at 7.30 on Wednesday next it is an event in which Sligo GAA will not be involved. This has been fully discussed by the players, their team management and the county committee. We are all at one on the point."

Zero logic. This upcoming U20 final should be played in Markievicz Park. Bekan is not a suitable venue even if Mayo had home advantage, just 500 seated capacity.
I am old enough to remember a huge crowd from Sligo turning up in 99 to see Roscommon paste us. I'd expect a decent Sligo crowd at this and Mayo are always well supported so a couple of thousand at it for sure. Bizarre decision even in those parameters. Have the Connacht Council thought this through? Among my friends and family, there is a lot of anger at this.

Do any of the Sligo lads know if we are pushing back?

GAA Discussion / Connacht u20 Final Venue?
April 15, 2022, 05:39:30 PM
I think this deserves its own thread because I want as much input as possible and for outside of Connacht folk to see what's going on.

Sligo qualified for the Connacht u20 final beating Roscommon on Wednesday. The game was in Markievicz because we last played Roscommon last year at u20 in the Hyde. Connacht at underage has a home and away agreement and at senior but because of attendance issues we play our final at neutral venues at senior.
Mayo beat Leitrim in the other semi-final.

Mayo and Sligo last played in the u20 in 2019 in McHale Park.

So can someone explain to me why the final is fixed for the Centre Of Excellence in Mayo?
A few things -

Its clearly our home game
No player wants to play there in a final
From a health and safety perspective if a huge crowd shows up, how many can it hold?
It favors Mayo and gives them home advantage
They played there in the qtr final

The Connacht council in 2019 changed the rules on the minor after the league to favor Mayo when they were likely to finish 3rd in the group. 2nd place was supposed to get a home semi-final but they changed it back to the home/away agreement when mayo finished 3rd.
Sligo played Galway 3 times in a row away in the knockout part of the minor championship in the noughties when they were a league format.

The rules are always changed to suit certain counties but this blatant disregard for the agreements in place. I think it's scandalous and if I was Sligo I would say Markievicz or nowhere.

Does anyone know what the logic is here or what's going on?

Rest In peace Lar/Eamon, an absolute gent of a man. He helped me grow a lot up on here. He would always have my back and help protect me from myself when id lose the run of myself on here in the early years. A mentor for sure.

I met him once at a Sligo Mayo match in 2010. Very sad news.

Condolescenes to all his family and friends.

Heartbroken, devastated, completely numbed all day. So hard to comprehend or to come to terms with this. Just a few days ago I was so happy to see he made the Sigerson Team of the year to this now. Anytime we talk about Sligo's future Red Og's name would always come up as a beacon of hope. A gentle giant. My heart goes out to all his family and friends, his club Curry, and all my fellow Sligonians. Rest in peace, Red Og.

Thanks lads,

Best performance I have ever seen in a Connacht final by a Sligo team. I know it was 68 since we last won it but we were robbed in 96 and 98 and came close in 15 and last year so it was insane that was this long. So happy the lads got the win we deserved.

We have been beaten down the last few years so it's been a great week for Sligo sport with Mona and Chris in the Olympics getting to finals and now this is just amazing.

Sligeach abu.

Meath next I believe maybe the Roscommon lads can confirm. ;)

Great win for us the last day, looking forward to the final. Having watched both games both teams look very evenly matched.

Best of luck Sligo.

The Burnley game is huge, Leeds got a break with Newcastle's covid outbreak killing their energy late on. That could save us. But Leeds are in a bad run if you go back 8 games, Everton and Newcastle massive wins but shows our inconsistency.

Burnley are flying and teams know Leeds approach. I find it quite shocking when Bielsa was goaded into naming his starting 11 against west ham and duly obliged taking away our competitive advantage.

Need Llorente back asap.

Also the ramifications of taking Kilch and Phillips off at HT, he could of taken any of 6 players off. It was such an indisciplined performance like a kids match everyone bombing forward with no regard for space behind. Morale may have taken a hit with bielsa's ruthlessness. Needs to be nipped in the bud.

I still think we will finish around 15th but it won't be as relaxing as people think. I would say at least 4 pts from the next 2 is vital whereas anything less has us in a bit of trouble. Fulham showing signs of life and they have been unlucky to not have more points.

The main reason I like this Appointment is Tony's character is exactly what is needed and his knowledge of setups and the game. As a player, he always made the right decisions on the ball. His shot selection was second to none.

Think you might be getting Tony mixed up with John. Tony was a bit of a work horse whereas John was the playmaker with a fantastic left foot.
Come to think of it, you are right, apologies, it's John I remember from 20 years ago, thank you. They are twins is my only excuse.

I am disappointed with O Hara being overlooked. Leonard the chairman a Tourlestrane man overlooking O Hara doesn't add up. Questions need to be asked. He is one of our own. He would know more of the players and talent pool in Sligo than McEntee. He would get the Tourlestrane contingent more involved. O Hara is not perfect but has more advantages. He has won 5 in a row at club level which is unheard of.

There has to be more to this to why O Hara didn't get it. Leonard will try to waffle his way out of telling the truth.

No experience as an Intercounty Manager means as this is his first job as Intercounty Manager none of us can predict with any great certainty if it will work out. Again we are taking a chance although I would be more confident of this one working out than previous.

The question remains of how we managed to regress with Joe Keane still involved. It remains unanswered so the continuity there is a concern. Will McEntee turn the tide more than Taylor, Dineen and John Mac. Who will be his other selector.

However that being said - I am happy with this appointment to a point. Oisin McConvilles article on McEntee talks of a very astute, honest, direct straight talker and an organized, and data driven approach with him.

He was very close to getting the Monaghan job in 2019 and was offered the Down Job in 2014 but declined. Managed Cross to 2 All Irelands in 2011 and 2012. Obviously selector and coach with Mayo under Rochford for 3 years.

3 Year plan is a lot but to build anything worthwhile you need time. I am surprised he went for us but I'd say Keane was in his ear as they worked together before.

The main reason I like this Appointment is Tony's character is exactly what is needed and his knowledge of setups and the game. As a player, he always made the right decisions on the ball. His shot selection was second to none.

Welcome to Sligo Tony and best of luck. Promotion from Div 4 to 2 and a Connacht senior Title would be lovely within 3 years.

Tony McEntee and Eamonn O'Hara are the leading candidates for the Sligo senior football managerial position. Crossmolina native Joe Keane part of McEntee management while Mike Solan guided Mayo to the 2016 All-Ireland U21 title is believed to be on board with O'Hara.
Both are good prospects. My only concern is and I rate Keane highly is that we regressed under his coaching. It makes no sense but we did. Taylor had a strong back room team with Dineen in there too.

I believe a fresh approach is required. I find the O Hara/Solan team very exciting. What can Mayo posters say about Solan? McEntee would want to have some plan in place and have performed unreal in the interviews to out do O Hara.

It will be interesting as our current chairman is Tourlestrane man and obviously so is O Hara so it would be strange if it wasn't given to him.

I am skeptical no other counties are affected, Sligo is in the bottom 5 number of cases compared to others. Leitrim is the lowest yet the only 3 counties affected by covid along with Fermanagh.

I'd say a fair few cover-ups happening within county setups. Before you comment look at what the Dodgers did in the world series final game.

Privately I did say I would be surprised if they get to finish the championship. Imagine if covid had hit Mayo, Roscommon and Galway would Sligo be Connacht champions by default? It's farcical.

For me I am disappointed in part because you always think you have a chance but also know we likely avoided a hammering. I just care about the wellbeing of everyone affected tbh and their families. Wishing all a speedy recovery.

I agree Mourne Rover, I remember Leeds finished 4th the last time we got promoted then won it. Depends how we do on transfers. Top 10 finish is possible if we keep Ben white and add to that especially a striker will be the target.

For me as you say Leeds getting promoted is different than other teams in that the revenue generated gives us a better chance of pushing on.

Leicester got promoted and the next season 2014/15 they had to go on a crazy run to stay up (winning 7 of the last 9 after only winning 4 of 29) then in 2015/16 won the league. Football is crazy so I am optimisitc. The aura of Bielsa looms large and 8 less games will suit us massively. I know we finished this season strong but no guarntees it would of been the same without the break. Cautiously very Optimistic just saying :o

But I remember being back in College in 01 and I did a powerpoint presentation on Leeds for my communications subject with predictions and needless to say I was way off on Leeds future which my mates remind me of a lot lol.

The last 16 years were tough, I have been to more games in league 1 than premiership.
Relegation x 2
Administration
10-point deduction
15-point deduction
Brink of liquidation
League one  x 3 seasons
Lost playoff final x 2
Lost play off semi x 2
Defeat to Histon
14th, 13th, 15th, 15th, 13th
Owners x 5
Managers x 19

And the only reason ever that crowds ever went down was to oust corrupt owners taking money out of the club. So drink every moment of the this last few days in Lads. We are Leeds United and we are back.

Premiership starts on Sept 12/13th happy f**king days MOT
