A Statement from Tommy Tiernan concerning accusations of anti-Semitism

Firstly, I would like to say that as a private individual I am greatly upset by the thought that these comments have caused hurt to others as this was never my intention; yet, the Electric Picnic public interview with Hot Press Magazine has been taken so far out of context that I am quite bewildered.

The things that I said in front of a live audience were in an attempt to explain my belief that one of the duties of the comic performer is to be reckless and irresponsible and that the things that they say should NEVER be taken out of context. If you read the full transcript or listen to the podcast you will see that I preface my rant by saying that it should not be taken seriously and as such, the rant took place as an example of my argument. While it is out of context, which it most definitely is now, it seems callous cruel and ignorant.

This is not the first time that something like this has happened and it probably won't be the last. However, as a public performer I can only hope that whatever wild, irresponsible and reckless things that come into my head will be taken in the context in which they were said.

According to Hot Press editor, Niall Stokes: "if you see or read it in context, there is a comment in there about people who are fanatical and who can't take a joke. But to interpret it as anti-Semitism is wrongheaded in the extreme. The way I see it, he is satirising anti-Semitism, while making a more general point that we should all be able to laugh at ourselves."

As Tommy says it's okay if you don't get the Down Syndrome reference as you can always come and have a laugh about the Romanians, duck sex, Offaly and Travellers.

Tommy ran the marathon in aid of the Down Syndrome charity.

I happened to watch "Ok baby" last night with references to those jokes.
He was on the edge with a lot of the jokes. Its mostly shock humour... and I laughed a few times.

But for the most part it was a shite DVD
He has lost his story telling and ability to see the really funny things in life.
Instead he goes too far with insults and pushes the boundaries of who can be insulted.
He has lost the run of it, and just isnt as funny as he used to be.

I have seen him live twice and would have seen most of his DVDs and that show in America and him walking around Ireland.
And some of his best friends are jews

Talk is cheap.
Running a marathon is not.

Depend a lot of people would run 26  milles to save their career. still it all part of the PR machine Insult some one , cry foul make amends all undeer the gare of publicity.
first the  handicapped  then the Jews next the I presume it'll be the Poles
Wasnt there a funny guy with a small moustache around in the 30's and 40's who had a similar routine,
not Chaplin liked his women a bit older

A career move?  ;D

As for the rest of that juvenile garble, you haven't a clue what you are waffling on about.

I don't think it is funny ranting about Jews who died back then. It should only be about Jews right now!  ;D

Sure, Tóibín knows that Cavan is about the only county that Cork can be compared to and come out looking cleaner.

Front page in todays Sunday Tribune.

In fact, i'm to blame for getting Tommy into this current do do......

At the Electric Picnic, he was been interviewed in the Hot Press tent.
In general Q+A, I asked him if he was ever accused of been anti semitic,
given his joke about jews.
Well, he went off on  tiride about jews, which wasn't for the faint hearted.
He is now in a bit of hot water, but sure then again, he is no stranger
to hot water!!

Can someone post a link to the story?

You wouldn't half sink a man GHD  :D :D

here's the link to the interview, GHD's question is at 27.40.  The whole interview itself i find good craic.  A fair few boys would need to lighten up a bit and wind their necks in.

Tommy's reply went way above some peoples head,
only those people, their eyes aflame with pure righteousness, could accuse Tommy of anti-semitism.

"It's obvious that Tommy is taking the piss," Hot Press editor Niall Stokes comments. "If you see or read it in context, there is a comment in there about people who are fanatical, and who can't take a joke. But to interpret it as anti-Semitism is wrongheaded in the extreme. The way I see it, he is satirising anti-Semitism, while making a more general point that we should all be able to laugh at ourselves."

The guy is a complete idiot. He somehow makes a living as a comedian which is testament to how many gormless idiots there are in this and other countries who just laugh when everyone else does. Not witty, not intelligent - just a sad man trying to hold on to the fading spotlight.

Its quite amusing that those on here who find TT joke on jews to be offensive in many occassions have posted outright rascist things about travellers on seperate threads. At least TT is trying to be funny while the posters I have in mind were just plain bigots.

Well i watched the interview this morning on my own, and it made me laugh.  That must make me a gormless idiot.  Take the poker from your hole and lighten up a bit.  ;)

The self righteous don't like Tommy because he takes the píss out of them as well as they are incapable of laughing at themselves.
