GAA Discussion / Re: Mind games

Forgive me, but it seems dumb to hire a specialist for this. Aren't coaches supposed to be motivating the players? Wouldn't a coach who knew the players personally be more likely to know what to say to a particular player than a psychologist? Why would they think that the same talk would be equally effective on everyone? There are players who get demoralised when they have a bad day and others who become more determined from the same experience.

General discussion / Re: internet troll jailed

This troll is a sociopath, someone who has no regard for the feelings of others. Blaming it on Asperger's syndrome is an insult to all those that suffer from this condition. People who have Asperger's want to be liked. They may say things that are inappropriate, but I don't think you could accuse any of them of outright cruelty. People with Asperger's are generally happy, not depressed.
No matter how long this troll stays in jail, you can't teach someone like this to have feelings. He will continue to be cruel for the rest of his life. There is no therapy for this.

1000 people is a drop in the bucket. It should be much more. It is important to preserve the Irish heritage and without measures such as this, the language could disappear. However, in order to compete in the global market and communicate on the internet, a universal language is necessary, and as of now, that language appears to be English. We would be doing a disservice to our children if we chose to teach the Irish language exclusively.

General discussion / Re: Fat, sick and nearly dead

Every generation comes what their own rules about what is healthy and what is not. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, went on Atkins, improved my blood sugar and felt healthier. It is true that poor people tend to eat unhealthier diets, but that could be due just as much to poor knowledge as to having less money to spend on food. It is always dangerous to jump to conclusions about "why" something is true, when there is no scientific evidence to prove it.
Read the book "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It" by Gary Taubes. The author recommends eating large amounts of fat, almost no carbohydrates, and that exercise won't help you lose weight. It is radically different from what we have been told is healthy, but thousands of people swear by it and other low-carb diets. Plus the author's conclusions are backed up by scientific research.
