Quote from: seafoid on August 02, 2024, 12:38:48 PMPartition ruined Ulster football. It was trauma. Cavan benefitted.  It is strange that Monaghan didn't.

Down broke the mould in 1960, probably the most significant All-Ireland final. They paved the way for Derry, Tyrone and Armagh. The current performance levels would have featured pre 1960 if there had been no partition

Down in the 60's was a one off and did little to inspire Ulster. Ulster football in the 70's and 80's was a mess. Down 1991 showed the way really.

You talk of Cavan thriving after Partition but why didn't a huge county like Donegal thrive also?

As for Ulsters recent records in Finals. Recent wins have been against Connacht teams. Ulster has been pretty average since 2012.

Recent wins have been against Connacht opposition but they've been underdogs on both occasions.

Still more all irelands in Ulster than in Connacht in that time and in the whole of Leinster outside Dublin, and the same amount as Munster.... Not a bad record

There was some stuff going on the 70s and 80s, you know.

Emigration, poor economy, lack of tradition and organization, isolation from its natural hinterland and the rest of the Republic, internal geography, competition from other sports.

The whole of Leinster outside of Dublin, that made me laugh  ;D . Mayo were the best team in Ireland in the 2010's outside of Dublin  ;D  ;D  ;D . Take Dublin out of the 2010's and every stat changes.

Measuring yourself against Munster which is a Hurling Province.

Connacht is a thinly populated Province - Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon (who really punch above their weight).  Mayo has roughly the same population as Armagh (Catholic) and Armagh is described as a small county. Galway has a big population but the south of the County is Hurling.

As a Galway man put it once."We're 1 third hurling, 1 third football and 1 third City".

I don't get that considering there's a strong football tradition in and around Galway city and it's suburbs.

The City is full of Blow-in's - Mayo, Clare in the main. Club Soccer is big in the City. There are a lot who live in Galway city who would not be interested in Sport - and live there for the relaxed culture of the city.

Tuam hinterland is the life-blood of Galway Football.

I'm not disputing that fact but if you look at Galways team from last weekend.

Robbie Finnerty, John Maher, Paul Conroy, Sean Kelly, Sean Fitz and Jack Glynn are from the city or just outside it.

Conor Flaherty, Eoghan Kelly, Daniel O'Flaherty, Cathal Sweeney and Tomo Culhane also part of the 26.

That's 11 players so not a bad representation.

Yep North Galway the old traditional football territory.
Castlegar abd Liam Mellowes, both hurling, were the only City Clubs I was aware of growing up.

Leitrim ladies beating Tyrone just now in the intermediate final the first final a Ulster team lost this year?
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

No, Tyrone were also beaten in the LGFA league final and I expect there are other examples.

Down in the division 3 final.

In fact I think Down in the ladies division 3 / 4 final? I think they may have been playing another ulster team(fermanagh) though.
