That's why it's popular in places like Mayo

Agreed but just because football is easy to play doesn't mean it's necessarily inferior.

Soccer is the easiest sport in the world to play but at the highest level it's arguably the most skillful.

From the beautifully coached Spanish teams to the totally uncoached Brazilian flair players who learnt the game on the streets.
Never seen a soccer player with 1/10th the skill of a Tony Kelly.

Lol it is nonsense like this that puts people off hurling.
Is it really?

Yes, it is. Hurling people have a serious inferiority complex.

With the best sport in the world its hardly an inferiority complex ;D

As I said any goon can play football

No, any goon can referee a game of football though!  ;D

Not everyone, you've got to be fit, know the rules and have the temperament to do that, if it was that easy, we'd wouldn't be short in numbers in every county... That's generally down to the goons behind the fence ;)
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

Joe Brolly, in his latest podcast, has a good chat with Dion about the AI Hurling Final.  He uses a great quote from from Spanish philosopher:

"great sport is savage and sentimental; an emotion, a prolongation of life"

Quality quote!

Hurley is much easier to referee as nobody bothers with the rules.

Good line from Dion: "Gaelic football is too easily manipulated by actors off the field..."
Hurling would have gone the same way but thankfully would be impossible to ruin it as the football coaches did. Waterford manager (can't rem who he was) a number of years ago tried the extra defenders back but it just didn't work... thank God.

Derek Mc Grath just played an extra man back.  I'd have no issue with that in hurling.

A point can be scored from 70+ yards in hurling.

That's the issue football has, hence everyone behind the ball.

It didn't work though and was an ominous 'innovation'...

Wooly interviewed McGeeney released today.

McGeeney reckons football has never been as high a quality as it is now.

He may be right

Physically, there's no argument - the players have never been in better shape

Technically, they're probably up there with any era in terms of the basic skills and the execution thereof

But that's all largely irrelevant - 9/10 times it's still an uneventful, stoppage ridden borefest

He would say that... does he really believe its better quality than 2002 - 2008? and the football those teams were playing... Tyrone, Kerry, Armagh, Dublin, Mayo even Sligo for some of it... Canavan, O'Neill, Mugsy, Gooch, Clarke/McDonnell...
Quality is being totally stiffled. The game is ruining the likes of Clifford who back then wouldn't have been just there to put his hand up for a mark..

Red hand tinted goggles a little bit there  ;D

It's just how specific those years were that jumped out to me as I doubt the game suddenly got worse in 09...

The game is hugely different now. There are definitely players in this era of the quality of that era - Clifford obviously, your own older canavan, Shane Walsh, comer, O'Callaghan, mannion, several dubs, the other Clifford. There is undoubted quality now but the game is hugely changed with possession, risk etc. any time I have looked back at older matches I have always thought you tend to see rose tinted glasses and the standard wouldn't be as good. I've not looked back in that era for a while mind you.

Fair enough although I was also thinking that McGeeney said that quality never as high as now and he played during that era. Does he really believe that?  No doubt is good players now Walsh maybe the best despite what's said about Clifford but is mostly unwatchable.

imtommygunn

I don't think individual quality has dropped though it's just the systems that are used make it harder to watch. Being less watchable and lower quality don't necessarily go hand in hand imo. Too many tactics now and the concession of kick outs changes a lot.

imtommygunn

I know I just found it funny you ended it in 08 rather than even a decade ;D

Not convinced Sunday will be great. Galway are very good but are defensive and I wonder about how Armagh counter that without mirroring it. Hope I am wrong. I think it'll open up a bit but could be cagey enough.
