From the Bunker

Hurling is an Elite sport. It is virtually non existent in most counties. The Elite Counties talk it up and the round-robin Munster and makey-up Leinster Championships make it seem larger than it really is. It's a great game, but there is no sign of it spreading and becoming more popular and there never will.

Such an amazing sport. The time and effort it takes to bring kids up from underage to an elite level means its unlikely to spread, especially to football counties unfortunately.

Was there ever an all Ulster hurling team tried? Theres pockets of hurling in Armagh and Down and obviously Derry and Antrim have had some excellent club teams through the years but it's always going to be the poor relation up here which is a shame.

Footballs easy to play, doesn't take much coaching or effort, kids pick it up easy enough and parents don't want their kids getting hurt.

That's why it's popular in places like Mayo

And line balls from the line not 2 feet inside it?

The 'hurley' lads tend not to get too bothered about these sort of silly details

There's so much going on that things like this are insignificant

The balloon chasers on the other hand have to feed on this type of stuff as there's feck all else occurring worth talking about
If I want to see bucks wallopin a ball with a stick as far as they can I'll watch feckin golf.

Fair dues.  But what happened ye on Sunday then?  ;)

Tbf you do seem to favour the low intensity sports

Agreed but just because football is easy to play doesn't mean it's necessarily inferior.

Soccer is the easiest sport in the world to play but at the highest level it's arguably the most skillful.

From the beautifully coached Spanish teams to the totally uncoached Brazilian flair players who learnt the game on the streets.

Never seen a soccer player with 1/10th the skill of a Tony Kelly.

Not to mention an idiotic article in yesterday's Independent(sic) headed
"10 reasons why this was the best Final ever"
Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Didn't know that. Anyway I'm away to search Twitter here to see what the English think of the wee Irishmen running around a pitch with sticks.
