Quote from: Blowitupref on December 02, 2024, 05:41:37 PMJust four seats to be filled. All in the Cavan/Monaghan area and at the moment it looks like two more seats for FF and one for SF and 1 for AON.

It will be 2 FF and 2 SF, AOntú best runner up. This gives
FF 48
SF 39
FG 38

So SF second biggest party after 'collapsing' with their highest seat share in modern times. Yes they may not have had the election they had hoped for but it was ok.

Interesting to see all the loyalists and unionists on socials celebrating it as if it's the death knell for a border poll. Do they not realise that the border is going to be a key policy for all parties and it's going to continue to be. And the reality is that it makes no real difference anyway as what happens for the north will be directed by the people up here. The timeline will not change

Yeah, the amount of Unionists/Loyalists (and a couple of journalists) who showed that they haven't a clue about Southern politics, elections in general, how PR STV works, and the GFA.

It's understandable our Northern brethren on here have a soft spot for Sinn Fein.

The reality down south is Sinn Fein offered no opposition in the last Dail.

They were like lap-dogs to the Government. They pandered to the immigration problem.

They had No real oppinion on Covid, housing and all the woke stuff.

Outside of Mary Lou, Pearce and Matt Carthy - they had no public characters.

They are just another Globalist Party.

They are going no-where and will NEVER be in government.

Shinners did well on seats.
Where in the main did their transfers come from?

Some tales that Labour will be courted by "FFG" and may not be adverse.
However Labour will hardly want to be in Governnent with SDs sniping from the sidelines.

With 86 seats,4 nailed on solid Indies probably the likelier outcome.

Labour would be wise to avoid going in with the chuckle bros. Bound to be a few independents who'll vote with FFG. Wonder when will they give up the charade and merge?

So that people can choose the government that they want. What is the point of democracy anywhere?

So it'll be FF/FG and 2 easily bought independents? Boxer Moran and who else?

Looks that way. Given the ff/ FG background of some of the independents, should be easily managed.

I would rather see that than have one of the smaller left wing parties join and get wiped out at the next election. Labour twice, and now the Greens have suffered big losses after being junior government partners.

The left wing parties need to cooperate at least a bit in opposition to show that they are a viable alternative next time up. They should also propose popular amendments to the government bills so that they can get FF/FG on record opposing them.

Looks like Social Democrats and Labour are leery of being subsumed by Sinn Fein in opposition. Both would have ambitions to be the largest left party in 5 years. One of the two may go into government but if in opposition their challenge will be to stand out as strong opposition as their own distinct party, versus Sinn Fein's eagerness to keep them as two smaller parties in a SF led left coalition in 5 years. That will be interesting to watch too. They were coy enough with Mary Lou's overtures.
