There's no guarantee that these trial rules will remain after the trial period - some might, some will almost certainly not.

Why didn't they just change venues for the senior finals? They've had a good bit of notice all week that certain parts of the country were likely to be snowed under tomorrow. Fix both semis for east of the island and cancel in the morning if needs be.
Conditions would hardly be worse than last year's semi in the fog in Newry!

First fight I've watched in years, so obviously know little about it, but I'm seeing a few of you say that was a great fight - I thought it was boring, a few flurries towards the end, but in general, really don't understand the appeal.
Granted I don't know what I'm looking at, but usyk was the definite winner for me.

Callum Brown for one was a big loss. Really stood out at underage level for Derry.

Don't think that's accurate, was he not a sub on that team who Clifford beat in 2017, definitely came on a lot the next year and impressed for the u20's, but not the standout of those panels?
That's not to say he wouldn't be a massive game changer for Derry now!

2 late goals. Magheracloone far better team on the day.

But fair play to the Arva men. Fairytale continues.

Austin Stacks comfortable winners against the Cork Champions today so the 'fairytale' will be coming to an end soon whether its the next day out or AI semi.

I think the team we should be questioning if that turns out to be the semi-final lineup is Austin stacks, who won 3 in a row club championships in Kerry from 2019-21!

Quote from: Captain Scarlet on November 20, 2024, 06:24:05 PMBut, if Leinster is to have any jeopardy the others need to grab any chance. I wonder if Kilkenny might think twice? A lot of mileage done.

I don't think even the news of Fenton's retirement will be enough to coax Kilkenny back into the Leinster championship.

Quote from: Hoof Hearted on November 15, 2024, 10:02:38 AMI remember that, iirc lavey had played the London club tirconnail Gaels in the quarter final at ballinascreen the same year, incidentally I think wee James was playing for the Londoners that day - it was another tempestuous affair, with Lavey squeezing through.

Pretty sure Lavey played Thomas Davis in Celtic park in the semi-final the year before too.
That was a hell of a game against Tir Connwl James Mccartans , Mattie Mcgleenan were playing for them that day
timmy connolly aswell from Ballymena, great player
Needed a late anthony Mcgurk goal to get them through.
Aye, it's sorta coming back to me now, Anthony (Derry's first all-star?) was sub and came on to save the day.
Thinking back on those games, we'd have had some laugh if someone had painted a picture to us of what the first 50 mins of most top level football is nowadays - slow methodical, no risk, no contact, probing, crowd on their phones looking up occasionally.....
Christ I've got old!!!

Yeah, was at an ill tempered AI club semi-final in Ballinascreen, between Lavey and Skibbereen, and that was in '92.

Quote from: marty34 on November 13, 2024, 05:44:29 PMI'd say all this fuss with Tally will blow over when the football starts.

It'll all be forgot about.

People have short memories.

Derry County Board must had clearly run out of road and decided to go for Tally, after him committing so publically to Kerry. The 2 leading figures don't come out with much credit. It was becoming another 'Casement Park' saga.

Money must have been threw at Tally as Derry were in a desperate position. In a way deserting Kerry seems to be the norm now - Mickey Graham and Gormley in a club team in Tyrone. Nobody is off limits now. Offer them what they want and it'll happen.

In fairness, I'd say Tally is glad in a way as the travel to Kerry is long and arduous for 6 months of the year. It takes its toll. A short trip over the Sperrins is more appealing in the first half of the year.

I never understood how that amount of travelling could be compensated for - did he have another job? Did he stay over when down there etc?

All in all though, I think this is a decent appointment, certainly much happier with this appointment than I was with the Harte appointment last year.
I heard the lads on the radio say that it wasn't a surprise in Kerry, that the writing was on the wall since Cian O'Neill rejoined that ticket a few months ago.

Quote from: DownFanatic on November 06, 2024, 01:32:12 PMI've said it previously on here and generally got slammed for it! But I don't actually think provincial and All Ireland Junior and Intermediate competitions are even close to being fit for purpose. There are just way too many inconsistencies and anomalies in the makeup of teams at these levels, county by county, for the competitions to really make any deliberate sense.
They're not, but they're good fun overall and generally are consistent enough. An odd anomaly happens (my own club temporarily dropped to Intermediate in 2018 after a very bad year at Senior with injury/emigration, won Intermediate, got to Ulster final) and always will. But usually it's fine and overall consistent enough. These things are never straight lines

I'd do some surgery on them to not have too much of a discrepancy. Like what happens in Kerry, where the intermediate team is the 9th best in the county. That's way too strong that others who could be anywhere from 11th to 17th best. Stipulate the % of what is Senior, Intermediate, and Junior in your county. Otherwise, anomalies will always happen. Some strong teams have a terrible year with injury etc and get caught out. Can't really legislate for that

Good post, at the end of the day, there are inconsistencies in standards and anomalies will occur, but overall it's great for the gaa as a whole for these communities and clubs to get that run outside of their county. Makes memories and reinforces the club's importance in the community.
That said Kerry really should be forced to change, I think both cork and Dublin have secondary senior competitions where the the winners don't play provincial intermediate - laune rangers play Austin stacks in the intermediate final today, I suspect we might see the winners later this year or early next year in Croker.

Quote from: bennydorano on November 08, 2024, 01:55:51 PMHard to know with Newbridge v Clann Eireann. I know watching the Armagh County Final I definitely thought CE stepped it up a few gears from previous rounds and looked like a serious outfit. I said that night CE will give Glen their fill of it (little did we know), so no reason they won't fancy themselves v Newbridge.  Bookies have it Evens to 5/4 in Newbridge's favour.

Not sure why newbridge are favourites for this, it'll probably be tight, but you'd think that CE should edge it eventually. A first title in 35 years takes a bit of celebrating, mission has been achieved and it can be hard to motivate yourself for that first round Ulster game a fortnight later.

They're taking another train to newbridge tomorrow evening too!!

Fwiw it might be their last trip of the year, so they may as well make the most of it!

QuoteJust after seeing one of underage coaches put up a post that 5years ago today we were beat in an under 16 B final and off that team 7 started against Glen with another 4 on  the subs. That's some yield from an underage team
]Some yield is right. Was told at U16 that in reality most underage teams get around 8 lads that will get game time for seniors at some stage and of those 8 players something like 3 or 4 will be in and around the team for a while until they call it quits. To get 11 active players out of 1 team is serious going

It is easier to get lads through in smaller clubs like newbridge than in the larger clubs. It also probably helped in that the bridge hadn't got much recent history of success, so there weren't a team of veterans hanging on too long which can also be a problem when it comes to giving young lads a chance.

Quote from: JoG2 on October 27, 2024, 10:12:52 AMFitzmaurice and Horan both contribute to the examiner football podcasts, so it'll be interesting to hear their rationale - I just hope this can be tweaked before serious football starts next season and our entire championship isn't ruined.

Ruined I tell thee!

It'll be starting to become as unwatchable as the majority of senior club championship games and that's saying something!

Quote from: Wildweasel74 on October 27, 2024, 01:13:06 PMIt should only be a 2pter if it's from play. What would Maurice Fitzgerald score these day with this rule. as he could score consistently from long distance frees.

Bryan Sheehan would be the MVP, but as I say, it's also pretty easy meat for a load of keepers out there.
