Quote from: inthrough on July 02, 2024, 10:25:13 PMA lot will depend on the fitness of Kelly, Walsh and Comer.
If they are all fit then Galway will be favourites and rightfully so. If not then Donegal have every chance.
One thing Donegal need to develop is the ability to find a full forward with a long kick pass. What they do they do very well but it is a bit one dimensional.

Very unlikely Kelly will be fit. He's been struggling all year and hasn't been playing well. In his current condition he's actually not much of a loss. Galway would be much better off with a fully fit player in there. At 100% he'd get on any team in the country but he hasn't been that player this year.

Walsh looked like he went off holding his hamstring, which (if accurate) is hard to fix in 2 weeks.

QuoteMannion, Jack and McCarthy in for the Dubs. All guns loaded.

Dublin going for an early blitz to finish the match early

Curse of the commentator after the potential of "a real classic" was mentioned twice within the first 6 minutes.

Quote from: snoopdog on May 23, 2024, 08:34:19 AMDown v Offaly a dead rubber. Are many others nothing games.
It is the advantage of the current round robin system. Only 1 dead rubber out of 8 games, and a meaningful difference to top the group by going straight through to the QF and an extra week off.

Whereas if it reverted to the Top 2 only qualify, which is what the Sunday Game/RTE in particular are demanding, there would be 5 dead rubbers out of the 8 games next week.

The problem is that the Quarter Finals end up as uneven games as the 2nd/3rd teams are wrecked from outings 3 weeks in a row. Making it near on impossible to beat the table toppers.

2 out of 4 lost their quarter final last year.

See above - because I think he's fine with it. Something happened...No doubt.

Most likely it was going to be leaked and he wanted to get ahead of the story.

Ref has been horrible but Armagh have been shite so far!

Can't blame the ref for this shite

He made the wrong call with the free in front of the benches before the goal (it wasn't easy to see the Armagh player had got the ball, from his angle, before hitting the Down player in the back),  but yeah, the teams need to look at themselves.

Free was for Doherty being emptied on the sideline by 3rd man in when nowhere near the ball.

Likely to be top seeds having had some warm up matches to try systems/squad before the Ulster final against a jaded Donegal or Tyrone. They'll probably not have a better chance of making a semi or a final for a while.
;)

In all seriousness, bar drawing Dublin I'd be very disappointed if we don't make a semi final. Donegal, Tyrone, Kerry, Derry, Galway, Mayo all very good teams but have their flaws, time we pushed on, sick of hard luck stories at the qf stage.

You have a serious chance of making top seed and then a 66% chance of drawing Clare or Louth/Kildare as 2nd seed in your group. Avoid the preliminary quarter final thereafter and you're set up to beat the hard luck stories!

Same old souls turning uo in hope that it will change. But what do you do? Do we have the footballers? Armagh took a longtime to get to where they are today under McGeeney. We need to stick with it,  i thought when Laverty started he needed 5 years, and I still believe that. You don't come from such a low starting point to being competitive with the likes of Armagh,Monaghan, roscommons etc overnight, unless you have a good foundation. Down hadn't won anything at any level since 2009 before Laverty came in. Our size is a major issue though. Has been for years. I'd be happy with a 5 point defeat to Armagh. We have little or no chance, and if we play like we did last night it's a thumping in the kip clones again.

The only way Down will get better is by playing in Div. 2, against better teams, for a year or two.  Then try to get up to Div. 1.

No point in looking for one-off victories in thr championship.

All about moving up the levels and improving the panel via the league.

100% right. Ironically McCorry basically got the road for saying this in a post match interview after Wexford put us out of the championship.

Quote from: Milltown Row2 on April 05, 2024, 03:44:38 PMThe board could have thrown up a lot more marriages over the years but being predominantly male arseholes (obviously not Watcher pat) it probably turned off the female GAA heads out their.

How do we make the board more inclusive? Not too many threads for the ladies, which, considering so many clubs are nearly half and half with the teams seems strange enough or the pattern of social media here isn't much craic lol

Quote from: nrico2006 on March 18, 2024, 05:58:52 PMAlways been stupid. A league with 7 games and there is a final for top 2. Be understandable if there were 20 games, but not enough teams in the divisions for this setup. Plus you see teams who are near the relegation zone in the penultimate week and nearly make the final by the next.

The flip side to this is that since we only play each other once in the league, there is no chance to redeem yourself from a "slip". The league final provides that for the 2 most consistent teams in that league perhaps?

I quite like the Div 1 league finals, but at the lower divisions, promotion is the prize imo and not a league title.

What about doing something drastic? Maybe league winners get a bye in the first round of their provincial championship and don't make the championship draw until the league has finished.
That would give some real value to the Div2/3/4 winners in particular.

The AI structure now does give weight to league positions but maybe not enough?

Or we just leave it as is. For some teams the only realistic chance of winning a competition, or getting to play in Croke park is a league final and that might be their priority.

Could just seed the provincial draws based on final league position. The difference between 3rd & 4th seed could change the chances of a provincial final (and subsequent all Ireland seeding), and simultaneously helps ensure that inadequate teams don't take up a San Maguire spot because a lopsided provincial draw gifted them a run to the final.
