trio of killers stalking those without university degrees: suicide, drug overdoses from a flood of opioids and diseases arising from alcoholism. Or, as Case would later dub these: "deaths of despair".

Similar processes are visible in the UK and drove the leave vote.

Why does suicide happen? Lots of different reasons, but two main ones are poverty and addiction

Both can be caused by unemployment, but both are also caused by lack of good employment, employment that enables you to have some sort of a meaningful life with some security

All the things that enable real freedom - decent labour rights, decent public healthcare, decent public transport, decent public housing, good public education, good affordable third level education, a decent social safety net, are branded as "communism" in America by pretty much the entirety of the right wing

American employment seems all about deliberate insecurity, about working people to the bone for a pittance, about treating workers like pieces of meat, and if you fall through the cracks, as many do, God f**king help you

But whites do not suffer because they are white, whereas people of colour do suffer because they are people of colour, the game is rigged against them in an outsize way

Addiction has been enabled through lack of regulation - because doctors had financial incentives to push opioids, because any other quack can push anything they like

That is down to lack of regulation

If you say that in America, you're branded a communist by the right wing

Right wing propaganda wins again

On the channel four news tonight they are saying California has a rate of someone dying of Covid every 6 minutes!!

Staggering numbers
and has been locked down partially or fully for 10 months

Obviously no one is listening, a virus can't spread if you stay in. How else can a virus spread?
you don't run everyone inside when it's 65 degrees everyday of the week , number 1 closing restaurants at 50% capacity and stopping outdoor dining has been a disaster.

Has this caused more covid deaths?

Strange to say the least.

Just 24 hours to go until we can start digging ourselves out of this hate filled sh1t show. Hopefully we can start defusing the hate, the fear, the lies and racism that have been visited on us by Trump, the Republican Party and the Murdochs. It is not going to be easy.

So it spread because nobody give a shite? Or the 'lockdown' wasn't actually a lockdown, a bit like the Norhh?

California may be a solid blue state, but unfortunately it's infested with just enough conservatives to spread their virus. hance most of the damage has been done in southern California where most of the conservatives live.
Eamon that has to be a seriously unfair statement. Like everywhere else people do things to suit themselves, and justify breaking the rules. Republican democrat, FF, FG, SF, Unionist, nationalist black white etc etc, it doesn't matter, people are people  and justify it to themselves.

I stand by my statement. It's common knowledge that conservatives are more likely to be Covid-deniers, less likely to wear a mask, less likely to social distance. There is plenty of research that backs this up.

QuotePartisan differences in physical distancing are linked to health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic

Numerous polls suggest that COVID-19 is a profoundly partisan issue in the United States. Using the geotracking data of 15 million smartphones per day, we found that US counties that voted for Donald Trump (Republican) over Hillary Clinton (Democrat) in the 2016 presidential election exhibited 14% less physical distancing between March and May 2020. Partisanship was more strongly associated with physical distancing than numerous other factors, including counties' COVID-19 cases, population density, median income, and racial and age demographics. Contrary to our predictions, the observed partisan gap strengthened over time and remained when stay-at-home orders were active. Additionally, county-level consumption of conservative media (Fox News) was related to reduced physical distancing. Finally, the observed partisan differences in distancing were associated with subsequently higher COVID-19 infection and fatality growth rates in pro-Trump counties. Taken together, these data suggest that US citizens' responses to COVID-19 are subject to a deep—and consequential—partisan divide.

tomorrow could be a shit show will joe be able to repeat the lines when getting sworn in , saw a video of him over the weekend and he has the frightened look on his face not a good sign .
The good news for all the progressives is he is ticking all the boxes with a very diversified group coming into government especially his assistant secretary of health .

Anyone want to make a wager as to whether Joe completes his 4 year term?

The Democrats played this like pros......Joe was the most electable of the main stream Democrats. Now he's in place let's unleash the  agendas of the more extreme unelectable candidates

If reports are correct-on day 1:

amnesty for undocumented  (which I'm for BTW)

End of KeystonePipeline

Recommit to Paris Climate agreement and Iran Nuke Deal

I guess with a complicit media he was able to hide out in his basement for 12 months and never get seriously questioned about what his plans were

And when it turns out Joe does just fine with the oath and delivers a very mature and realistic inauguration address?

Extreme?

That's all bog-standard centrist Democratic stuff.

As was in the platform (they had one, not like the GOP, whose platform was "whatever the Dear Leader's having").

Trump made it all about himself, the GOP made it all about Trump, and all Biden had to do was sit back and watch and sound normal. The media reported on COVID and George Floyd, both issues which were dominated utterly by Trump. Wasn't much Biden could do either way on those.

Had Trump had played it right, both issues could have allowed him to stride the field like a victorious general while Biden had to sit there idle. It could have been his finest hour. Instead, he squandered a gift and showed the country why he could not be trusted to lead it.

As always GMAC you pull a Murdoch news talking point out of your fine open minded brain and project it on the "Fake News".

Is this actually what's considered radical to Conservatives these days? Anyone on the right who thinks those policies are extreme really needs to look at how far to the right they've drifted for the centre to seem far away...
