If it's true that the US Navy knew on Sunday that the submersible had imploded and said nothing when a major rescue effort was underway all week then the Americans should be picking up the tab.

Probably the case that they weren't 100% it was that. Same as the banging they thought they heard during the week. I wouldn't want to call off a rescue because you thought you heard a loud bang at the time.

If the US Navy had written off the possibility that the sounds they detected came from anything EXCEPT the sub and thus ended their search and rescue mission before it began, you'd be on here frothing at the mouth about Biden abandoning the crew based on incomplete information.
