GAA Discussion / Re: Cork v Mayo NFL
March 24, 2007, 07:48:11 AM
If Cork line out as selected then I cannot see them winning especially as Donnacha O'Connor is injured and they are only playing Shields from the U21's. Cork have decent enough backs but the forwards are weak both in terms of creating and taking scores - they need twice as much possession as the other team. Even against Tyrone there was only two points in it when Mulligan was sent off and also Tyrone had to replace their two corner backs. Tyrone more or less gave up in the last 15 mins and it was easy for Cork to get some handy points. If Mayo break even at midfield they should win as I cannot see Cork scoring more than 9 or 10 points and Mayo are capable of 1-12 or 1-13. Forecast is for dry weather which will test the cork backs..the night against Tyrone pitch was heavy and it was more suited to backs.

Final Score 2-11 to 1-8.

I suppose this is the first real upset of the year. I think Kerry have not won Munster at U21 since 2002.

QuoteTeam severely weakened now with all the All-Ireland winning forwards out, Killian young out as well and maybe Tomas O'Se as well.
Resources tested to the limit now

QuoteIts a pity the U21 game could not be changed and with the Crokes players out as well it will test the strength of the Kerry panel espeically in the forward line, no news on the team just yet, Limerick are playing well and will present a tough game this weekend.

Will Kerry be able to field a team at all  ;)

QuoteIt's gping to be a tough game for Mayo to play. Donegal would be favourites because they shocked Cork in Cork.

More of the Beal Bocht this week again Farrandeelin!!  ;D Last week you were giving Mayo no chance aginst Kerry. Is this some form of reverse psychology that your shrink has advised you to adopt!!! Should be one of the best games of the weekend - Donegal are a good outfit and would not count them beating Cork as a shock. Nevertheless Mayo are one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the country with a lot of good young players. It helps when bringing in new players that they are coming in to an experienced and settled team and they develop much faster. Could be a draw or Mayo by a couple of points.

Who are ye playing the following week Farrandeelin (preferred Cnoc Mor) - I suppose ye will be underdogs anyway!!

If you make the trip enjoy it

Mayo chief demanding 'a performance' against Kerry

By Jim O'Sullivan
NEW Mayo boss John O'Mahony admits he is facing the biggest challenge in an illustrious managerial career.

During his time on the sideline he has seen Mayo narrowly lose in the All-Ireland final of 1989, Leitrim make a major breakthrough in Connacht and Galway bring Sam west twice.

Now back with his native Mayo and facing Kerry in Castlebar in Sunday's Allianz NFL opener, he points out he has never been one to shirk a challenge.

In the immediate term, he expects ''a performance'' this weekend. Looking further ahead, he hopes that they will retain their Division One status — in what he accepts is the strongest group in the competition.

The last few months have been ''enjoyable'', he says, even though he has to divide his time between training and campaigning for the General Election as a Fine Gael candidate.

"The response has been magnificent. In many ways the intensity of preparation now is more intense than it would be for the provincial and All-Ireland championship.

"Sunday's game will come almost as a relief for everybody, if just to get back out between the white lines.''

Of course, he acknowledges that questions are being asked about his ability to deliver an All-Ireland title, that the ''rehabilitation'' process will have to run its course if the humbling experience of losing to Kerry in last year's final is to consigned to history.

Politely, but very emphatically, he rejected a suggestion that Mayo possibly suffered from ''a losing mindset'' in big games.

"If there's a losing mindset in Mayo, there is an awful losing mindset in 28 counties that have not had the success Mayo have!

"They have no divine right to win every All-Ireland final and they do not have a divine right to lose every final either, but, talking about finals has no relevance to where we are today,'' he commented.

O'Mahony says that they haven't talked about what happened when the teams last met, saying: "you talk about situations like that when you get into that position — and we are far, far away from there. There is no point in talking about Mayo winning All-Irelands or anything else. It's like a race, there's no point in looking at the fifth jump ahead when you might trip at the first one — and that first one is Kerry on Sunday.

"What we will be trying to do is get a performance out of Mayo and in many respects Kerry were not mentioned at all this week.

''We have to produce a performance to become competitive and if we do that we'll see how close we can get to them.''

Understandably, he has looked at a wide circle of players over recent months, keen to run the rule over footballers who might have slipped through the net and just as anxious to integrate some more of the successful U21 of last year.

And, In that context, he is delighted that the 'veteran' players like last year's captain David Heaney and James Nallen remained onboard.

So has Ciaran McDonald, except that he won't be available for a while. "Ciaran has a disc problem in his back. The solution would be to have an operation, but that would rule him out for the year. He doesn't have that much time left, but he really wants to play this year.

"We're looking forward to gelling all that together and that's where we at. Okay, I know people are saying we are under pressure and success will only be an All-Ireland title. But, we are not even in that parish yet.

"There'll be no good talking about All-Irelands if we don't pick up points in the League and do well in the provincial championship.

"Let's take first things first.''

QuoteI can't seeing us winning the match unless Kerry are suffering a post-All Ireland hangover which I doubt
[/b]

Bit early in the year for trying to play the underdog!!! All points to a Mayo win - more preparation than Kerry with O'Mahony fielding reasonably strong sides in the FBD. Also Kerry without Dr Crokes players. Expect Mayo to be very much up for this game as it is at home and O'Mahony's first real game in charge. Losing to Kerry in a league game could lose him a few votes come May!! Will be surprised if Mayo lose this one.

QuoteThats the first time Ive ever seen "Seáfoid" written down, I think its a Mayo word, but looks foreign. Anyone know where the word derives from?

You must not read much Irish HighKing. Seáfoid means  nonsense or rubbish  and I have heard it used in many counties.

QuoteSometimes you have to wonder were the Rossies brought up on the same planet as the rest of us, as the rest of the world advances they seem to drift further and further back

Quotewhether or not Jimmy had a bib is a mute point

Whatever planet I am on and whether I am advancing or not I know what  a moot point is. Maybe seanshunt could explain what  a "mute point" is in that bastion of advanced civilisation and cradle of learning he inhabits.

According to Mannion he was going for a goal.

"I knew it was probably our last chance and I really wanted it because I felt that the two Corofin goals in the first half were my fault," said the delighted Mannion after the final whistle. "We knew if we kept going right until the wire, we would get the chance. After their penalty, they were two points up with two minutes to go and we knew we were under pressure.
"But if you got a chance you were going to take it. I just had to beat one man and then it opened up for me. And thank God, it went in."
