RIP Indeed. Definitely not the stereotypical politician, sometimes a little aloof. There is an anecdote about how he was on a constituency visit down to Cork in the mid 80s, and saw all the red and white flags on poles as Cork went towards another hurling All Ireland Final. Apparently he was astonished at the depth of support for Lech Walesa and the Solidarity Polish Party in Cork :)

RIP Garrett, you did well.

Hmm... sounds suspiciously like the story about John McGuffin and Jerry Rubin:

One day in the late 1960s, when we thought we'd heard
the chimes of freedom flashing, I drove to Dublin with
McGuffin and the American anarchist Jerry Rubin. A
mile or so out of Newry, McGuffin explained to the
fabled member of the Chicago Seven that the town we
were approaching was in the grip of revolution. The
risen people had turned en masse to anarchism. We'd
better barrel on through. If we stopped for a moment
the fevered proletariat would surely engulf us...

Down were in the All-Ireland final that weekend. Every
house, lamppost and telegraph pole was festooned with
red-and-black flags. Rubin was agog, at risk of
levitation when we passed under banners strung across
the streets, reading, "Up Down!"

"These people really got the revolutionary ethic",
enthused the ecstatic Rubin.

"As much as yourself, comrade", allowed the gracious
McGuffin.

Or the Greek fanstthat were astounded at the love and support for their European Championiship Finalist team as they toured Waterford in 2004.

Lucky they didn't visit Mayo as we were supporting their opponents, Portugal.

This is from an Olivia O'Leary article in 1984. So I didn't make it up :)

'He's not one of the good old boys and he doesn't pre. tend to be. He admits happily that when he was a young¬ster one of his favourite books was a girl's school story called "Bashful Fifteen". He's never felt any compunction to pay slavish tribute to the nation's sacred cows.

During the 1982 February election campaign, the Fitz¬Gerald bus pulled up in a village in Co Cork. A large Teddy swathed in red and white was pushed through the bus door at Garret. It was a lovely Teddy, he exclaimed, and what did the red and white stand for? Was it a symbol of Polish Solidarity, he asked. The Cork faces looked up at him in¬credulously out of the wet night. Sean Power, the Corkman who was press officer for the campaign, put his head in his hands and groaned. "They're the Cork colours, boy" he wept "they're the Cork colours." "Really?" said FitzGerald happily. It didn't bother Garret that he didn't know the Cork colours. He doesn't measure his Irishness in terms of shamrocks or Guinness or even the bould Thady Quill.'

Wrestler Randy Savage Killed In Car Accident today RIP

Yep Ross, the Macho Man is dead. Sounds like it wasn't just a normal crash though.

SEMINOLE, Fla. -- Professional wrestling star Randy "Macho Man" Savage died in a Seminole car crash Friday morning. He was 58.

The web site TMZ reported that Savage suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel of his vehicle. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Savage did indeed die in the crash after notifying his next of kin.

While the FHP says Savage may have had a "medical event," it would not be confirmed until an autopsy is performed.

According to the initial FHP report, a 2009 Jeep Wrangler was traveling west on SR-694 when it went out of control just west of the intersection of 113th Street North.

The Jeep went over the raised concrete median divider, crossed over the eastbound lanes and hit a tree head-on.

A female passenger suffered minor injuries.

Savage, whose real name is Randall Mario Poffo, is best known as a wrestler for the WWF, WCW and WWE throughout the 1980s, 90s and first part of the 2000s.

Savage is known for his trademark bandana, sunglasses and "Oooh yeah!" catchphrase.

Another wrestling superstar, Hulk Hogan, said on his Twitter feed Friday, "I'm completely devastated, after over 10 years of not talking with Randy, we've finally started to talk and communicate."

In another tweet, Hogan said, "He had so much life in his eyes & his spirit, I just pray that he's happy and in a better place and we miss him."

Woops, Ray McCreesh's pic up twice. Apologies MR2, corrected.
Didn't really want to put up a new thread for anniversaries, may as well keep it to this one thread, just wanted to put up a quick post to mark the anniversary.
