edit: beginning to get a bit messy. I missed the "selection committees" so will go back and add them in. I was misled by some papers than seemed to indicate that the "trainer" was the precursor to the "manager". Will update with selection comms for the years so far.

as it is, I reckon everything back to the very late 70s and early 80s are ok, although I should have put in dates or months.

All

I was wondering could you help me? I'm looking for a full list of Laois managers, in both codes, for as far back as Laois managers go.

I'll use this post as a sticky and edit the post as additional info is posted.....and see what becomes of it. I know there's a lot of recency bias below, but please add what you can.

Think Tom Darcy was from Carlow

No. He was a Tullamore man, but worked in Carlow RTC. He seemed to play for whomever he pleased! He may have lined out with Laois too. From what I read, he was very forward-thinking and progressive for his time.

Chrimtain

I think Tom Darcy played with Rhode. I also think he was on the Offaly panel that won an All Ireland in the early 70s. Could be wrong about that though.

Mick Lillis is originally from Clare not Kerry I believe .

Correct Mick Lillis is a Cooraclare man. He is a uncle of Clare footballer Pearse Lillis.

In football until 1965 there was no management, and actually no organised training sessions. Laois reached the 1963 Leinster football final and a 3 man county board representation picked the team, two of whom were the then controller in chief Lar Brady and Bill Delaney..

Was this the case in every county?

..the Convention of 1950 set up a football selection committee of no less than five and no more than seven to select the County Teams

...

In 1958 Maurice floated the idea of a Team Manager being appointed, yet it was to be another year before the concept would be adopted by the Clubs of Down.

In 1959 Down were to win their first Ulster Senior title ..

A bit like modern times so with Kavanagh and Handy making the decisions
