Hurling Discussion / Re: Ulster Hurling

From 2008 through 2010 all 9 counties competed in a highly seeded competition. In 2011 Cavan dropped out and in 2012 it was back to only the stronger counties.

Quote from: Milltown Row2 on November 22, 2023, 11:21:50 AMDoes anyone still have house phone? Ours broke down about 10 years ago, we haven't replaced it
We ported our land line number to Google Voice, don't think that is available outside the US. This meant we kept the old number which we attached to an old cell phone with no SIM card that is on wifi at home. We still get the occasional call, mostly junk, except for some calls from the NYC schools system which still has the number for our kids.

Quote from: Sportacus on November 21, 2023, 06:05:39 PMNot singling out SF, but the irony of politicians coming out today one after another to express their concern at bank closures in small towns. Whatever the rights and wrongs, they have lost the right to criticise when all they do is sit around getting paid to do nothing apart from bicker.  A press release is a good days work in their wee world.
That's due to one party and their drug dealing bosses. Not SF or SDLP or Alliance or any other party.
Although it was SF last time.  But that's not what I'm driving at.  I just find them all a bunch of amateurs.

Nobody has a good opinion of politicians.

Maybe they think one or two work hard on their behalf etc. but as a colletive, they get no thanks.

That's the way it works, the world over.  Ireland is no different.

Where do politicians rank? Worse than bankers, estate agents or traffic wardens???

If we could only find out who elected the politicians into the positions they hold.

When have either of them demonstrated impartiality

Quote from: Hound on November 06, 2023, 08:15:12 AMChris Johns (on the Dunphy podcast) had a take on why Keir Starmer is following the government line on not calling for an outright ceasefire. He said it's because he's been briefed by British Intelligence about planned attacks on major Western cities, and he speculated that a couple may already have been thwarted, but that if there is an attack, the West will respond hard.
I think Starmer is following a similar line to Blair.

Blair wanted to win elections, he decided the way to do this was "New Labour". "New Labour" just meant thinking what would "Old" Labour do and do the opposite. Old Labour would have opposed the Iraq war therefore New Labour will support it.

Starmer is just doing the opposite of what Jeremy Corbyn would have done. Jeremy Corbyn would have opposed just about everything that Israel did therefore Starmer will support just about everything that Israel does.

Labour and the Democrats are both desperate to not give their right wing opponents anything they can use against them in the next election on this issue.

Quote from: Itchy on November 03, 2023, 04:54:12 PMSinn Fein have now called for the Ambassador to be expelled following pressure from within the party. Better late than never.
They say the Ambassadors role in Ireland "is now untenable". How was it tenable yesterday?

Some boys are hard pleased

Asking for a political party to have a consistent stance on important matters isnt asking for much
It's not really that important. Whether or not the Israeli ambassador to Ireland is expelled or not with make no difference to the Israel Gaza war.

Another winter World Cup in store

Saudi Arabia is set to host the men's 2034 World Cup after Fifa confirmed it was the only bidder for the tournament.
Australia decided against bidding to stage the tournament hours before Fifa's deadline for declarations of interest on Tuesday.

Morocco, Portugal and Spain are the only bidders for the 2030 edition, with games also played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
A Fifa congress will confirm the hosts in late 2024.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Mexico and Canada.
Australia's governing body Football Australia says it intends to focus its efforts on hosting the Women's Asian Cup in 2026 and the Club World Cup in 2029.
Football's world governing body Fifa had said the 2034 World Cup would be held in Asia or Oceania, and an Australian bid was regarded as the only potential challenger to Saudi Arabia, which announced its intention to bid shortly after Fifa's decision.
After Tuesday's deadline passed, football's world governing body confirmed the bids for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups and said there will now be "thorough bidding and evaluation processes" for the tournaments.
Fifa said it will "conduct a targeted dialogue with bidders, to ensure complete, comprehensive bids are received and evaluated against the minimum hosting requirements as also previously approved by the Fifa Council....
