QuoteMissing millionaire Steve Fossett declared dead

Steve Fossett, the multimillionaire adventurer, has been declared legally dead five months after his disappearance while flying over the Nevada desert.

His wife, Peggy, had filed her petition in a court in Chicago to allow the process of executing Mr Fossett's will to begin.

"It was very sad," said Michael LoVallo, Mrs Fossett's attorney. "At first she hoped and sort of envisioned him walking down the road the next day with another story to tell.

"But as the days went on, she realized it wasn't going to happen as it had on other occasions when he'd had close calls."

After hearing testimony from Mrs Fossett, a family friend and a search-and-rescue expert, Judge Jeffrey Malak of the Cook County circuit court yesterday found there were "more than sufficient" evidence that Mr Fosset was dead.

Court records stated that Mr Fossett's estate was "vast" and worth millions of pounds.

There has been no trace of the 63-year-old adventurer since he had taken off in a single-engine plane from an airstrip near Yerington, Nevada, on Sept 3 last year.

Nothing fishy about this? How can you just disappear?

Strange one indeed.  With today's technology available, and the fact that he went missing in a country that has every known technology available to it, how can he not be found?  No wreckage, nothing.  I'm sure Nevada is a massive area but surely with planes and search teams, something should have been found.

Sounds like a Bermuda Triangle type story....
ITN - 29 mins agoSearch teams looking for the remains of adventurer Steve Fossett claim to have spotted wreckage.

Mr Fossett has not been seen since he took off from an airstrip at an isolated ranch in the Nevada desert on September 3 last year.

Search teams in California said they had spotted what is thought to be wreckage but Madera County sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart would not reveal the exact location of the reported aerial sighting or provide any more information.

The news comes after a hiker said he found three identification cards bearing Mr Fossett's name in a bush just west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, in eastern California, on Monday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is trying to determine whether the ID cards found by hiker Preston Morrow are authentic.

Mr Morrow said he found an FAA identity card, a pilot's licence, a third ID and $558 in cash but saw no sign of a plane or of any human remains.

Mammoth Lakes is around 90 miles south of hotel magnate Barron Hilton's Flying M Ranch which Mr Fossett left in a single-engine plane before he went missing.

Search teams had already flown over Mammoth Lakes but it had not been considered a likely place to find the plane.

Mr Fossett's widow Peggy said in a statement: "I am hopeful that this search will locate the crash site and my husband's remains.

"I am grateful to all of those involved in this effort."

Sir John Hermon - Former Chief Inspector for the RUC
"When it's too tough for them, it's just right for us"

orangeman

The former chief constable of the RUC Sir John Hermon has died.

Sir John, known as Jack, was chief constable between 1980 and 1989. He first joined the force in 1951.

His wife, Lady Sylvia Hermon, is now the Ulster Unionist Party's only MP. She has held the North Down seat since 2001.

Sir John had had Alzheimer's disease for several years. He died in a nursing home in Bangor, County Down, on Thursday evening.

"It is with enormous sadness that the family of Sir Jack Hermon announce his death, after a long and valiant struggle against the ravages of Alzheimer's," a family statement read.

"He passed away very peacefully at teatime yesterday in a nursing home in Bangor.

"Members of his immediate family, including his wife, Sylvia, had been with him throughout the day."

His period as chief constable was one of the most turbulent periods of the Troubles, including the 1981 republican hunger strikes and probes into the controversial so-called shoot-to-kill allegations made against the RUC.

Former RUC assistant chief constable Alan McQuillan said Sir John was "a huge figure in the history of the RUC".

"Sir Jack was a very energetic and dynamic leader, but when you got to know him you saw he was driven by a total passion for impartial policing, for protecting the community and an immense pride in the men and women who served in the RUC," he said.
