Not sure. My mate who is big into his cricket said he read something about a short-term illness but no idea what

He was meant to take over as coach of Afghanistan in 2022 but declined the offer due to ill health apparently. Not sure if it was the same illness that he died from.

He had a remarkable sense of theatre given the circumstances. Hope he made a few bob out of it. I did see an extended interview online where a wine company used him in some marketing with the caption: take your hands off my pinot-noir.

Read a Guardian piece on him where I think he was largely unaware of his fame. Quite the character. Book being wrote about him. Went by several names and was famed for escaping from jail if that gives an indication of his life

It turns out it was suicide. He suffered from anxiety and depression. He had attempted to take his life in 2022.
