Title: Munster Minor and U-20 Football 2019
Post by: Ball Hopper on November 30, 2018, 11:05:31 PM
For 2019 the competition will have two phases.

Phase 1 is a group of 4 - Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.  3 games for each team.

Phase 2 will be a group of 3 - Cork, Kerry and the winner of Phase 1.  2 games for each team in  Phase 2.  First game will be Cork v Kerry, second game will be Cork/Kerry loser v Phase 1 winner, third game will be Cork/Kerry winner v winner of Phase 1.

Top 2 teams at the conclusion of Phase 2 contest the Munster Final.

Sounds ok to me.  Any comments?

I can fully understand why but i dont like the fact kerry and cork are cherry picked to go straight into phase 2 based on tradition alone. I love the extra games from a tipp point of view at this level as minor, especially now its under 17, is all about development. I cant see ourselves doing anything in minor again though, next years minor and the team the following year are very very good and i would expect a good run and chance at winning a munster with them but there is no hope of that with the new format because the day of the dual player at minor is gone and we wont be able compete without the dual players. so to sum up mixed emotions on it but i certainly wouldnt be against it just unfortunate for ourselves in getting the best players now to play football

Great performance from Tipp , 4 points up after 4 minutes then the Cork  ::) Ref gave frees out of sympathy to the Waterford lads , their own supporters were embarrassed ! The 3 Thurles lads were superb along with Gooch Shanahan of Roscrea and Kyle Shelly .

Phase 1, Rd 3 results:

Tipperary 0-10 Limerick 0-10

Waterford 2-7 Clare 1-9

Final table has Clare on 4 points, Tipperary and Waterford have 3 each and Limerick have 2 points.  Since Tipperary beat Waterford 4-13 to 0-7 in Rd 1, they meet Clare in the Phase 1 final on 7 May.

Also on 7 May is the first game of Phase 2, Cork v Kerry in Pairc Ui Rinn.

Phase 2

Streaky scoring bursts in this game. Kerry go 0-6 to 0-1 up after only 9 minutes. Cork bring it back to 0-7 apiece after 22 minutes.

Kerry get the next 4 points and Cork get a point on the stroke of half time to leave Kerry ahead 0-11 to 0-8 at the short whistle.

Second half opens with a Cork goal to level things, but Kerry have run their total to 3-18 by the time Cork get their next point with five minutes left.

Final score: Kerry 3-19 Cork 1-9

We were one of the favourities to win it out along with Mayo, Dublin, Tyrone and of course Kerry. This may be our first of three meetings with them.
It would be great to get revenge in the AI Final.

Phase 1 final:  Clare 3-12 Tipperary 0-6.

Upcoming fixtures:

15 May Clare v Cork

23 May Kerry v Clare

22 June Final:  Top 2 in Phase group of 3 teams.

If Clare beat Cork next week, the Kerry/Clare game is a dead rubber as both teams are already in the final.

A month wait to the final and then another month before the All Ireland quarter finals. Can they not schedule fixtures a little better in Munster?

I thought that was to become less of problem since minor became U17?

Thought the same...no explanation for the month between Munster final and AI Quarter final though.  The tradition of having the minor final as curtain raiser for the senior final in Munster is all I can come up with.

Makes more sense to play the U20 final with the senior final maybe?

Munster Minor Final:  Kerry 3-14 Cork 2-14.    Kerry beat Cork by 16 points in the round robin portion of the championship, so the Rebels improved a good bit and found a better side.

Quarter Final line-up has Munster v Ulster sometime near the end of July.  Kerry play the losers of Monaghan/Tyrone, with Cork playing the winners.

Looking at 2017 minor (which was U18) should show us something.

Except it doesn't...

QF's:  Cork 3-21 Tipp 1-8, Kerry 2-16 Clare 1-6, Limerick 1-10 Waterford 0-9;

2 Play-offs: Clare 5-11 Waterford 0-6, Clare 0-10 Tipp 0-5;

Semifinals: Kerry 2-17 Cork 1-10, Clare 3-13 Limerick 0-12

Final: Kerry 2-21 Clare 0-3

Dunno what to make of it...player indifference in Clare and Tipp?  Although David Clifford and Diarmuid O'Connor from that Kerry minor team are ineligible to play U20 this year.

U-20 Munster semifinal:

Kerry 0-18 Limerick 1-3.

Cork/Waterford semifinal pushed back 24 hours (to Friday night 12 July) - No bonfires expected in Clonakilty for that fixture.

Half time  Cork 0-10 Kerry 0-6. A deserved lead for Cork.  Kerry will need to improve their shooting and shot selection to win this final.

FT Cork 3-16 Kerry 0-12. Congrats to Cork a very impressive performance where they were good value for that 13 point win. Kerry were poor and not too many of tonight's players will be fast racked onto their senior team.

Shows how good Clifford is. He made that Kerry side All-Ireland winners 2 years ago. Scored 2-8 against Cork that year. 4 goals in the AI final.

Bar a few notable players those Kerry minor sides were maybe not as laden with talent as people thought at the time.

Kerry have costed themselves the last 2 u-20 all-ireland by not giving OShea and Clifford the chance to win U'20 all-irelands. They have plenty of time on their side for senior fball. I dont agree withe the rule that playing senior fball prevents u playing u-20. The players get picked for seniors regardless and lose out on playing u-20 fball

Cork very impressive, Kerry don't really care deep down about underage or club success it's all about senior. I think the last time they took such a trimming wS in 2011 and some of that team pushed on.

Still having said that Cork have some impressive players ; not sure about the u17 and u 20 big gap to senior

You must be joking if you think Kerry don't care about underage success. Kerry hate to lose any game at any level and especially to Cork.

If this rule effects countys like Kerry etc just imagine what it does to smaller counties with very limited resources at either level. This u20 set up is a joke and the gaa need to review the  situation, bring it back to u19 and keep  18 year olds engaged an age that the gaa seem to leak most players.
