I've entered Sligo sprint this weekend - it should be good for race day and transition practice. First pool tri too, so unsure what to expect.

Has anyone done it before?

I did the sligo sprint last year, and will be doing it again this weekend. Really enjoyable event last year, helped by great weather on the day, and not much wind. Not sure what the forecast is for this weekend. It was my first pool tri so wasn't sure what to expect. Found it ok. Have a chat with the other guys in your lane and find out who's best to go 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. This will make it a bit smoother. Also, bring a water bottle into the pool area. There can be a fair bit of waiting around, and there was serious heat in the pool area so you could dehydrate very easily even before you start. The cycle I found quite tough, despite there being little/no wind. There are a few hills, nothing major, but I just found that it was a long grinding cycle. The run was fine - there's a hill at the start which isn't ideal considering that you've just completed a tough cycle, but after that hill it's a nice flat route.

Enjoy...

looking for some advise... i have a smart lg already but looking at getting a bigger model as i moved house and it looks lost in our new living room.

having a smart tv already i wondering are they worth it? i mostly use it for netflixs and streaming a few matches but i recently downloaded Kodi on my laptop and i am thinking about getting an android box to use this through tv now instead. download speed is 1.6mbps

what do other posters use smart tv for?

if i stick with smart i am thinking of this option. any thoughts?

cheers

I was thinking along the same lines as yourself. I have an android box, so didn't need a Smart TV, and certainly didn't need a UHD TV. So what did I end up getting - a Smart UHD TV  :-X

From the bit of looking I did, the majority of TVs in the size I was looking for (around 48") were Smart, and any ones that weren't lacked other specs - # of HDMI ports, motion rates, etc. So I was fixed on a Full HD Smart TV. But for a little bit more cash, I could get UHD, so took the plunge. Below is the model I got, a 49" LG - was €1500, but reduced to €750. Got it a week ago, and unbelievably I havent even had the chance to open the box - work has just been flat out crazy. So I can't comment on how good/bad the TV is, but I'm dying to get it set up and running.

Folks,
I'm looking to purchase a new TV, and wondering if anyone has any advice or recommendations. I thought I'd dig out this old thread rather than starting a new one.

Looking for something in the range 43"-49". From the small research I've done, I don't think 4K is worth it just yet, especially for the amount of TV myself and herself watch. Full HD should suffice - not even sure I need a Smart TV, as we have a very good android box which I think provides everything a Smart TV offers. Although, it seems most Smart TVs offer more in terms of connections, etc than just Full HD.

Some TVs I've looked at:
48" Samsung Full HD Smart TV. €579
http://www.currys.ie/Product/samsung-ue48j5200-smart-48-led-tv/334950/397.0.2

48" Panasonic Full HD. €529
https://www.expert.ie/products/tv-dvd/televisions/32-inch/panasonic-tx-48c300b-1080p-full-hd-led-48-inch-tv

49" LG Full HD. €499.
http://www.tesco.com/direct/lg-49lb5500-49-inch-full-hd-1080p-led-tv-with-freeview/719-4794.prd

If anyone has any experience on any of the above, or other HD TVs they'd recommend, I'd be very grateful.

thanks

Bud Wiser is launching a new one on 10th August, was supposed to have it this week.  If you can't wait then the best next one is Zoomtak. Make sure it is from the original manufacturer and has an aluminium case. Apart from dissipating heat the amount of junk stuffed into plastic boxes is unbelievable - and dangerous.

Next year our flat screen 1080p will be history as we all move to 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) and there are a couple of comparrisons on YouTube about UHD.  Our box already has the capability to stream UHD. If you are looking at UHD on YouTube make your screen full screen and then go to settings within YouTube and select UHD above 1080p.

Our new box has 4K Streaming/Ultra High Definition and comes with Android V 5.1

Hey guys
It has been a long time since I posted on this board (nearly forgotten how to do it at this stage), but I do keep an eye on it from time to time.

Anyway, I picked up a Q5 android box from www.fennetec.com and I have to say it's a superb piece of kit. Incredible spec, and great functionality. Also, a small thing, but the remote makes it very easy to navigate around the system and kodi. The design of the box itself is very neat, but also looks bullet proof, so will hopefully have it for years. In comparison, I bought a relatively cheap media player a few years ago, but it packed in after about a year. So the Q5 might not be the cheapest box on the market, but my motto is - you generally get what you pay for, and there's no doubting the Q5 quality. Some good reviews in the links below, and these guys seem to know what they're talking about...

Finally, just to say - I had barely placed the order on the website, and Bud rang me to arrange delivery. And he dropped it down personally, so fair play Bud - 10/10 for customer service.

Apologies if the links/quote above don't work, I'm well out of practice....

Heard reports on the news this morning. sounds like it caused unbelievable destruction. Terrible news.

Doubtful if there's too many earthquake-designed buildings there. 7.3 is a major quake too.

Apparently Denis O'Brien has a building out there, and had it designed to withstand earthquakes. About 600 workers in the bulding, which stayed intact, and all safe. Thats some good news in an area completely detroyed.

General discussion / Re: External Hard Drive
December 22, 2009, 11:43:16 AM
guys,
thanks for all the replies - some great info there. I have a 500GB media player myself, which plugs directly into the tv. It's bursting with movies & tv shows, so I'll need to get myself some extra capacity in the new year - and I'll refer back to this thread for the advice.

Regarding my initial question about the storage/archiving of his stuff on the PC, I think I'll definitely rule out the memory stick cos he'll definitely lose that (had forgotten about that little problem). I might go for Homer's advice and get a portable hard drive - it's very handy that they dont need a power input. Are they generally fairly reliable/robust though??

thanks again for the advice.

Myles, yea 500GB is definitely loads more than he needs. I was hoping for something around 160GB, but the only ones of that size in PC world were the portable options and they cost more that the ones listed above.

A 16GB memory stick costs approx. €45 in pc world, so it's actually not too far off the price for the hard drives I looked at. I dont know exactly how much storage he needs, but it wouldnt surprise me if he needs more than 16GB.

that said, maybe I am better off getting one of those 16GB memory sticks first, and see if all his stuff can fit on it before getting extra storage.

General discussion / External Hard Drive
December 22, 2009, 09:13:38 AM
Im looking for some recommendations for a good external hard drive. My wife's father has a mountain of photos, documents etc on his computer that he wants to take off and free up some space. So I've been given the job of doing that over the christmas.  :(

Anyway, normally for something like this I'd buy online, where there'd be a load of different options, but because I'm now stuck for time I'll have to make do with buying from the local PC world. So I checked there last night and the options are:

1. Western Digital Elements 500GB. €69.99
2. Seagate Freeagent 500GB. €89.99
3. Iomega Prestige 500GB. €64.99

Does anyone have any experience of the above units? Once I've saved all his files onto the drive, it'll probably be stored away and rarely used again. But the important thing is that the unit must be reliable - if I end up getting him a hard drive that loses all his files, I'd be better off leaving the country..

anyway, any help would be appreciated.

EC, I think it's more likely Mascherano will be sold for financial reasons rather than torres. Masch has stalled on negotiations on new contract and will be sold next summer if he doesnt sign. No way will they let that contract run down. But whatever about mascherano, there's no way the owners could sell torres IF he wants to stay.

Quote from: brokencrossbar1 on December 21, 2009, 11:52:15 AM
As for Torres I reckon he would give a full season to Liverpool if Benetiz left.  In some respects with the World Cup coming up this summer this will be a big focus for him.  Should Rafa go now or in the summer I reckon that Torres would be loyal enough to give a new manager a season so that he could see what his intentions are.

Yea, torres would probably wait and see if a new manager arrives, before making up his mind. But CL qualification will definitely be a factor also.

If Torres would be 'gone in a heartbeat' if you fail to qualify for the CL does that not nail the myth then that he is a dyed-in-the-wool Pool fan?

Doogie, while I do believe Torres does have a love for the club, I think the days of players staying loyal to clubs are long gone (bar the few exceptions). And at the end of the day, Torres is a gifted player with ambition, and if he thinks Liverpool cant meet his expectations he'll be gone, and that includes playing in the CL every year and competing for the PL. Sure didnt a CL win just about convince Gerrard to stay. And wasnt it the lure of CL football that initially made Villa's captain Gareth Barry go elsewhere.

QuoteMorinho would be the ideal replacement for Rafa

Not Hiddink??

He would be ideal given that the Ruskies are not going to South Africa and he has time on his hands.  the problem is that the Russian Mafia, sorry, Roam owns him and he is basically his bitch!  If he could be pulled away from his role in Chelsea and Russia then yes, he would be ideal too.

I reckon the problem is that no decent manager would want anything to do with the Liverpool job so I'd doubt very much if jose or hiddink will be coming. The club is on the verge of going bankrupt, and it's run by a pair of gobshites who dont speak to each other. There'll be plenty of job offers for the special one, hiddink, etc to consider ahead of the Liverpool post.

I've always been a rafa fan even though some of his decsions have been frustrating, to say the least. But after 18 games in PL this season, the results have just been appalling, and the manager has to take responsibility for that. Yes they've been absolutely plagued with injuries, but even still, it's no excuse for the performances which have been as bad as I've ever seen. The defence is just ridiculous, kuyt is gone backwards, benny seems to have lost his appetite and gerrard & torres just seem fed up. The players have to accept alot of the blame, but it all reflects poorly on rafa.

I still think the owners should persist with Rafa until the end of the season before getting rid of him (or by some miracle he resigns). Of course the big risk is that Liverpool finish outside the top 4 - Torres would be gone in a heartbeat, and you'd be lucky to get Steve Staunton to manage the team.

Croi,
We stayed  in novotel in cusco, see link below. Stayed there for a few nights before heading off on the inca trail, and then for another 4 nights after i think. Hotel was fine and in a good location, dont know about costs cos it was part of an overall honeymoon package we booked.

http://www.novotel.com/gb/hotel-3254-novotel-cusco/index.shtml

as for colca canyon, well we absolutely loved it but maybe that's cos we were lucky to see about 30 condors gliding just a few metres above our heads. An amazing sight. But I also know another couple who could just about see 1 condor in the distance on their trip, and left disappointed. So you do need a bit of luck with that trip.

enjoy

             reina

babbel  carra sami    riise

            Hamann
   alonso        mccallister

            Gerrard
      Torres     Owen

No width in that team above, but that's just an indication of liverpool's lack of width over last 10 years. Would be up to babbel & riise to provide any width going forward. Finnan very unlucky to lose out at rb. At lb, Riise in earlier years was excellent and way above aurelio IMO. Midfield a difficult one but alonso and hamann automatic for me. McCallister only played for about 3 seasons but probably did enough for inclusion. Mascherano very unlucky to lose out. And as for the forward trio - nothing really needs to be said.
