General discussion / Finding/Dealing with Accountants?
January 18, 2015, 01:07:15 AM
Hi All,

I am after anybody who runs their own business or deals directly with Accountants in their working life to complete a very quick survey. I'm doing some research into the relationship between a business and its accountant, the level of engagement & reasons for changing etc.

Here is the link and thanks in advance!

GAA members wanted for new RTE Gameshow
09/09/2008

Vision Independent Productions are currently making a new entertainment show for RTE television and are hoping to get GAA clubs all around the world involved.

The show will be an interactive gameshow that will use Skype technology, so people can take part from anywhere in the world. The idea behind the show is that people will be connected to the studio via Skype, and can win themselves 1,000 euro by answering a general knowledge question and completing one challenge.

The show will be filmed towards the end of September and will air on Sunday nights on RTE 1 in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

We are hoping to have some rounds in the show themed, and would love to have some GAA rounds where contestants in their county and club colours take part.

Details of the show can be found by clicking this linke SHOW DETAILS

A promo of the programme can be found at www.visionindependentproductions.com and clicking on the link for "next contestants".

We are hoping that as many members get involved with the show and think that having GAA people oversees taking part would be an extremely strong and emotive part of the show, as well as give people the chance to say hello to their families and friends in Ireland.

The only thing you need to be on the show is broadband internet and access to a web cam with software like skype. If members don't have skype but would like to take part, they can either contact the Vision Independent Productions Office on +353 1 861 4444, where a member of the team can talk them through the free process of downloading and using it. Alternatively Skype can be downloaded directly from HERE

We hope that as many of you as possible can join in and we look forward to seeing you online soon!

A new thread is worthy for this semi final pairing,

Everybody will be expecting Tipperary to produce the goods and beat Limerick in this match and really give Kilkenny a game in the final. I suspect alot of people will want to see tipp win on this basis.

However I believe Limerick will give Tipp one hell of a game, as historically there is very little between these two counties. Been Limerick bias and been brought up a mile from the Tipp border this is a game that I think limerick can win. It could be similiar to 2006 where Limerick were not suppose to beat Waterford.

An added bonus for Limerick is that it looks like both the Moran brother Ollie and Niall will be back and in contention for a place on the team. Which is been named tonight I believe.
Another significant advantage is the management on the line, McCarthy is alot more astute than Sheehy and in a close game this could swing it for Limerick.
Limerick haven't being hurling super all year and have one big performance in them, Scraping over Wexford, Laois and Dublin.
The final thing is Tipp haven't been playing aswell as the previous year and have only been hurling in patches,

All these things I think will help make Limerick more competitive and wont be over run  by Tipp as some suspect.

Looking forward to the game.

Halifax GPA Hurling Twinning Programme Expanded for 2009
10 February 2009

Halifax GPA Hurling Twinning Programme Expanded for 2009 Details announced for the coming year Halifax and The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have announced plans to expand the Halifax GPA Hurling Twinning programme for 2009 by increasing squad visits for the second year of the scheme.  The 2009 Programme kicked off two weeks ago when Galway hurlers David Forde and David Collins paid their first visit to the hurlers of South Down (Non Ards).

The Twinning Programme, aimed at promoting hurling and fostering ambition in the non-traditional counties, will see counties >from the Lory Meagher and Nicky Rackard Cups paired with their counterparts at McCarthy Cup level for the forthcoming season.

Under the scheme, players and/or coaches from the top hurling counties travel to the "twinned" county to oversee a coaching session where advice, experience, tactics, training and coaching guidance are provided. The event is also publicised in the local media to help promote the game in the region.

Uptake for the inaugural year in 2008 exceeded expectations with eight squad visits taking place including high profile trips by hurlers from Kilkenny, Cork, Tipp, Waterford, Clare, Offaly Antrim and Wexford. This year, it is expected that two visits per squad will take place to further increase the benefits brought by the programme.

While the Rackard and Meagher panels will benefit directly from this link, it is hoped once again that, where possible, local coaches, schools and development squads in the region could also be included during the visits. Leveraging the talent and profile of the top hurling sides is seen as a very effective way to promote the game in the non-traditional hurling counties. The local media will be kept informed about all visits and developments.

Commenting on plans for the second year of the Twinning arrangements, GPA chief Dessie Farrell said: "The GPA was delighted with the response from hurlers to the programme last year, particularly so from the McCarthy squads who were more than willing to support the scheme. I know that top hurlers have been travelling voluntarily to the non-traditional counties for years - that we are trying to do is encourage more of that on a formal basis. There is a great sense of loyalty among the hurling community and thanks to the support of Halifax, we can help to promote the game locally and encourage more interaction between hurlers."

Halifax have an ongoing commitment to developing Gaelic Games and its players at all levels through partnerships with the GPA and through Dermot McArdle's GaelicPerformance camps as well as supporting clubs through several other local initiatives such as the Halifax Club Fair Play Award.  Speaking at the announcement of the 2009 programme, Karl Manning, Director of Retail Sales at Halifax said, "The Hurling Twinning Programme is an extremely worthwhile initiative which Halifax is once again proud to be involved with. Credit is due to the GPA for overseeing the launch and growth of this scheme and also to the players who devoted their own free time last year and have committed to doing so again over the coming months.

"The passion of the players at all levels is the key to the success of the Hurling Twinning Programme and this will help fuel the sport amongst non-traditional counties.  We have already seen that this programme works and if we can sustain this progress there will be a real and lasting impact on hurling at all levels."

The scheme is part of the GPA's on-going commitment to develop the game and is being organised on the ground by the GPA. Last year's draw paired the following 24 counties together for an initial two-year cycle.

Monaghan & Tipperary
Cavan & Waterford
Louth & Clare
Tyrone & Limerick
Donegal & Kilkenny
Non Ards (Down) & Galway
Fermanagh & Cork
Fingal & Laois
Sligo & Offaly
Leitrim & Antrim
Longford & Wexford
Warwickshire & Dublin

Hurling Discussion / Senior Inter County Hurling Permits
February 03, 2009, 10:49:44 AM
An interesting topic for the non-Liam McCarty cup teams.  There has been a few transfers, any more high profile one's been made?

This is the link to the information:
http://www.gaa.ie/page/2009_club_transfers.html

The current count is
1 Galway player to Cavan
2 Offaly players to Longford
1 Westmeath player to Louth
1 Limerick player to Louth
2 Tipperary players to Meath
1 Wexford player to Kildare

No particularly high profile players in 2009 changing counties compared to the previous year where you have:
Eoin Brislane (Toomevara/Tipperary) with Meath,
David Kennedy (Loughmore-Castleiney/Tipperary) to Kildare
Paddy O'Brien (Toomevara/Tipperary) to Kildare
Leo Smith (Portumma/Galway) to Westmeath
James O'Brien (Bruree/Limerick) to Kerry

Tipperary veterans Eamonn Corcoran and Paul Ormonde have called time on their intercounty careers.

The pair informed manager Liam Sheedy that they no longer wish to be considered for Premier County selection.

The two defenders have enjoyed largely symmetrical careers: both debuted in 1999; both are 31; and both have retired at the same time.

Both men starred on the 2001 Liam McCarthy Cup winning side. Wing back Corcoran pulled on the Tipp shirt on championship day an impressive 43 times, while the versatile Ormonde struggled with injury and lined out only 16 times in the premier competition.

Corcoran collected an All Star in 2001, while Ormonde would have been team captain last year had he actually made the starting XV.

GAA Discussion / Emigration the effect in the GAA
January 13, 2009, 01:54:34 PM
With this been a topical issue at the moment, I though it appropriate to try and gauge gaaboard members on what direct effect it was having on your county and even club,

Just to start off a list,
- Gary McCloskey (Leitrim) - off to London around xmas and a doubt whether he will be lining out for Leitrim.
- Aidan Foley (Tipperary) - he is away to America

Hurling Roundup

Brian Moroney of WIT and Cork's Tadhg Og Murphy battle it out in the Waterford Crystal Cup quarter-final at Pairc Ui Rinn
11 January 2009

There were eight hurling games across two competitions as Waterford IT, Clare and University of Limerick claimed Waterford Crystal Cup wins, while DCU, Roscommon, Down, Wicklow and Fingal were victorious in the Kehoe Cup.

Reigning Fitzgibbon Cup champions Waterford IT made life difficult for Cork at Páirc Uí Rinn as a totally new look Rebels outfit succumbed to a five-point defeat.

Gerald McCarthy's side, minus all of last years panel finished on the wrong end of a 0-14 to 0-9 score-line in a game which saw the students take control from the off.

A more clinical WIT led by 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval, however Cork showed moments of brilliance, in particular at the back through their inspirational goalkeeper Alan Kennedy.

But Kennedy's positive showing, and those of captain Barry Johnson, who top-scored with seven points weren't enough as WIT fired on all cylinders.

As he had done the previous week Timmy Hammersley was again to the fore for WIT, with three excellent scores from play, while James Gahan also made some excellent contributions to secure a five-point win.

Across the province a second half yellow card for Joe Canning proved costly as Clare claimed a 0-13 to 0-12 win over Limerick IT.

Amazingly the students held a 0-8 to 0-4 lead at the interval and even looked to be coasting to victory at this stage, but the Banner firmly put LIT on the back foot on the restart.

Some familiar names came to the fore with Tony Carmody, Mark Flaherty and Tony Griffin powering the Banner comeback.

It was a 67th minute point from Carmody which proved to be the match winner in a game which was highly entertaining throughout.

Limerick IT may have failed to advance to the semi-finals, but their cross-city student breathern in University of Limerick ensured some Limerick interest in the next round, thanks to a 0-14 to 1-8 win over Cork IT.

Offaly's Brian Carroll was in superb form with nine points, but it was Cork IT who held a 0-6 to 0-5 interval lead in this Newtownshandrum encounter.

Despite a red card for substitute James Heffernan, following a second yellow card Carroll continued to steady the ship for UL, and although leaking a Ryan Clifford penalty goal, UL held out for victory.

In the Kehoe Cup, torrid weather conditions made it hard for both DCU and Mayo to get to grips with their game at DCU Sportsgrounds, but a convincing final quarter display earned the students a 1-13 to 0-9 win over their Western counterparts.

DCU may have been minus talented Offaly hurler Diarmuid Horan but they dug deep to grind out victory against a Mayo side who were missing star performers Keith Higgins and Adrian Freeman.

Deadlocked at 0-6 apiece at the end of a keenly contested first half it was Alex Steinson (0-5) who was scorer in chief for the visitors, who held a 0-09 to 0-06 lead 18 minutes after the restart.

However good displays by Offaly's Colm Coughlan and Waterford native Tadhg O hUallachain paved the way for a DCU win.

Elsewhere there was good results for sides from outside the province with Roscommon accounting for neighbours Longford by 3-8 to 1-10 at Pearse Park, while Down were 2-16 to 1-12 winners over Meath at Páirc Tailteann.

Meanwhile Wicklow ground out a 1-19 to 2-5 win over Trinity College Dublin at Bray Emmetts, and Fingal were 3-9 to 1-8 winners over neighbours Louth at Fingallians
