Title: best mobile phones on the market???
Post by: kinghen on October 14, 2008, 02:29:24 PM
I'm upgrading to a contract phone shortly but i wouldnt be too clued up about what phones are available;
just looking for a bit of advise on the best phones about, i wouldnt be over technical mind you, but would like a decent phone with some good extras, although something which is relatively easy to use/doesnt break over easily would be essential too!

thanks in advance!

I just bought that iphone thing - seems grand so far.

It is a very user friendly interface (I believe those are the words being bandied about now).

Simply put, If I can use it - anyone can.

I have one as well.  It's a great phone, no problems at all with it yet.  The N96 is now available though, 16Gb expandable up to 24.

It probably depends what you are looking for, i am due for an upgrade in July '09 and hopefully the IPhone will be an option and they will have ironed out any kinks in it.

Just got an Iphone this week and have to say it's great so far. Handy to use which is a must when it comes to me!

In saying that I would be easily impressed. I've been more or less using a yogurt carton with a piece of string before it!!

Use the iphone and not particularly impressed to be honest, never seem to have a 3g connection, internet more often doesn;t work than it does and texting takes forever

The 3g connection would be dependent on where you live i take it. Maxpower do you live in Dunloy? I would doubt if there is one there. My sister in law has one and she loves it, the I Phone that is.

Took me a couple days, but the iphone is a cracking piece of kit. Ive messed around on the nokia one too, and it is also a great phone.

I dont buy this argument that the iphone is a gimmick, which doesnt live up to its function as a phone... It sends and recieves calls and txts - like any other phone.  ???

On top of this it has some seriously novel and fun features. Regarding the 3G - I took it off the other day as using it apparently runs down the battery faster - and the regular edge network is perfectly fine for internet usage - doesnt really take noticably longer than using the 3G option.

Some one else mentioned the LG VIEW- that is really storming up the market over here.

Can anyone recommend a cheap phone - around 20-30 quid (pay as you go).  All i want is something that rings and texts and that I can throw at my arse at work.

Aye live in Dunloy, and can understand that i don't get 3g here but i don't get it in at work, in fact the only place i do seem to get it is casement park.  took it to watch a match one day and the guy who came with me spent the whole match watching clips of usain bolt on u tube.

You not think the texting is awful slow,

Well i have had it back being repaired about 4 times and it still keeps freezing and switching off for no reason plus anyone I ring complains of hearing a echo when they talk to me

People cant hear me at all sometimes and I've to turn the phone off and back on and ring again - they hear me then.
You constantly get a "connection error" when trying to dial - I'm not sure if this is a network problem or the handset but if you turn the phone off and back on again it goes away.
It goes to voicemail for no reason too, doesnt even ring.

Mine doesnt freeze, it just takes about 10 seconds to switch between the screens sometimes.
If the phone is locked it takes about 20 seconds to get it unlocked.

Just to confuse you even further. The N95 does have e-mail. at least on the 3 network it does.
Its a good phone! can do pretty much everything, so long as you don't mind having a slightly larger than usual phone.

I got a Sony Ericsson W380i about the same time, it never gets a good signal, compared to my previous Sony Ericsson. I reckon Sony Ericsson have got so wrapped up in camera, music and irrelevant crap that they've forgotten that all this Internet etc is useless if the phone cannot pick up a signal!!

Bought the LG Viewty yesterday,Well when I say bought it actually cost me nothing as I was upgrading.Seems like a grand phone and very easy to use,There is a fine camera on it 5megapixal which is great.
I have free internet usage for a year but I can't seem to pick up the 3G in Lucan,I had no problems getting it on my old phone which was the Nokia N73,which was the worst phone I have ever had,Just wondered do I need to turn on a setting or something on the phone? I have tried google but can't find any help.
Also is there any sites that offer free downloads for this phone, like software updates or games etc..
Alos I can't get the google maps option to work, but maybe thats due to the lack of 3G?

i got the viewty a few weeks ago and i must say that i'm more than happy with it. the camera is brilliant, with the auto focus and flash. i find it easy to use the touch screan and can text ok on it. i've no idea about the internet on it LL. it works ok for me, but then all i would use it for is checking the football scores or bebo.
i would be interest if anyone knew of any free software udates etc for it though. the wife just bought the LG Cookie which is cheaper but seems to have a lot more applications on it.

Used to upgrade my mobile at every opportunity... but recently i've just kept the same phone because it worked 100% and gave me no hassle no matter how much abuse i put it through.  It's a sony ericsson but its been that long that i'm not sure of the model - w800i i think.

I'll probably upgrade soon tho and i intended sticking with sony ericsson given how my current phone has lasted. i was thinking about the C905.  Now having 2nd thoughts due to the posts here...

I also have the nokia 6500 classic for work - which is a grand phone as well.  The N96 is getting good reviews so that might be the way to go

Was never fussed on going down the touchscreen route but they seem to be getting good reviews on here, so i could be persuaded.

Any advise would be welcome.

Was offered the Sony Ericsson C905 myself today by 02.
Have the N95 and wanted the N96 but the only tariff they do it on is £80 a month for a free phone.
Vodafone are doing a £40 a month tariff for the N96 with unlimited mobile interent.
But when i said i was going to cancel, they offered me alot and Sony Ericsson C905.
Managed to get them down to £25 per month, 1200 anytime, anywhere minutes, unlimited mobile interent( no fair usage policy) and a bolt on that lets you make calls in the south for the same price and recieve calls for free

Whats the Sony Ericsson C905 like?

Anyone have an Ericsson C902i?  Person looking at it rates camera function as important.  I have the N95 but they think it's too bulky and to be honest I'm not crazy about the camera.  It's a 5mp and CAN take good pics but subjects need to be fairly still.  Any reviews of the C902i?

i've been thinking about getting a contract phone recently myself and i was looking for some opinions on what the best phone available is?? i currently have an LG Viewty which i'm happy enough with but i'm a bit of a gadget freak and always looking for the new thing (its a curse).  i'm PAYG at the min using a genie card. the most of my money at the min is spent through web browsing so i feel a contract would suit.

is the iphone 3g as good as its hyped to be or are there better phones on the market?

I'm with 3 at present and pay £25 for 1100 mix & match minutes/texts.  Their customer service sucks tho.

Any of the great deals out there with other networks available to new customers??

Depends what you require from your phone?

For browsing it's easily the best phone on the market. Also the new OS released in July, looks as if it will address most of the gripes people have had against it. I would assume Apple are going to introduced an upgrade to the hardware as well based on their previous release cycles of products and the heavy discounting of the Iphone 3g at the moment.

I dont know about the nokia - but you cant get insurance on the iphone.

Are you sure Puck? I was offered insurance for mine. Didn't bother taking it as it was going to cost about £100.00. So then I lost mine over in London for a weekend and ended up getting another one out there. By the time I was back home of the weekend a guy had called to say he had it so he sent it back over to me. Which was hard decent of him. So then I was sitting with two of them. But I tried putting my new sim into the old phone but it's not working. Any ideas as to why? I didn't think O2 could block it from working?

Did you report it stolen/lost? In this case it could be blacklisted. I'd say go along to a O2 shop with id and they'll restore it.

O2 do offer insurance with the Iphone, completely pointless though if you have contents insurance as your already covered.

i-phone insurance is £10/month. N96 has great features but a ball of scrap for breaking/freezing etc...
There's a new tocco ultra coming out in the next few weeks which has the option of a keyboard to text, it'll be the dogs balls!!!

Apple have not announced it but it looks very likely, to coincide with the 3.0 Operating System release. Also Apple generally sticks to release cycles and based on the previous 2 releases, it would be due a hardware upgrade. I would nearly bet my house on it not having an integrated keyboard for 3 reasons
- first, they are introducing functionality for the keyboard to be used in landscape mode, hardly worth bothering if you include an integrated keyboard;
- second, they are opening up the hardware licensing for using the dock connector. This will allow 3rd party peripheral manufacturers to to build mini keyboards to attach to it.
- Lastly, it will go against the entire design philosophy of the Iphone and it's interface.

There are rumors though it will incorporate multi core processors and support 7.2mbit hsdpa connection which in my opinion will be the killer blow to all other handsets and possibly the sony psp/nintendo ds. With that sort of platform, it opens up some interesting development opportunities.

i dont spend to much money making calls. i mostly use my phone for texts, listening to music and browsing the internet.  i have recently been seriously thinking about getting the iphone as it appears to be the best for browsing and ofcourse can do the other things.

Based on the last update, O2 allowed people to take an early upgrade but you had to pay for it and take out an 18month extension. You probably won't get a free update, unless you have one of the higher iphone tarrifs.

Easily the best phone for what you want. Good discounts to be had at the moment, if you want to take a 3g version and based on what you want it will do everything you want and more. No guarantee they will update the hardware or if they do it will be worth updating to. The OS is a free update for Iphone users and the 3g supports all its features or there may be a chance you can upgrade to the new hardware even though you have just purchsed one.

Lads i have a Sony Ericsson W995 phone and all in all it's a decent we phone and I'm happy with it but the one query i have with it (and this may apply to other phones) is when i take a picture and email or a video file they're massive and i was wondering if there is a setting that can reduce their size. The camera saves the pics as a Jpeg (i think) but one photo is over 1MB, surely this should only be about a tenth of that and a 1 min video file is about 10MB WTF

What quality level have you set in the camera form pictures and videos? You can select 3 levels I think, and the highest level would be saving pictures at over 1mb in size.

I am looking to splash out on wan of them fancy android phones. The Samsung Galaxy S is the one cleaning up on the reviews. What's this sound like for a deal?

Phone: Free.
300 minutes.
Unlimited texts.
500mb mobile internet.
Unlimited WiFi acces.
£85 cash back.

The main stumbling block for me is that I live in the North but can only pick up O2 Ire in the house. Therefore I'd need to negotiate a deal that negates that cost.

Go for the HTC Desire HD - it gets the best reviews in a head to head between the Big 3 (Iphone4, Galaxy and Desire).  I have a galaxy and it's a good phone (and everything else), but the battery is shockingly bad (and I am very careful not to leave battery hogging apps running).

I've had every model of Samsung Galaxy from S1 through to S4.  Each one has developed hardware probs within 18 months despite all of them having Otterbox cases.  I got sick of forking out £200-£300 replacing so bought a Vodaphone Smart Ultra last year for £100 new. Brilliant choice.  Virtually indistinguishable fron the Samsung and I get asked constantly is it an iPhone 5 or an S5.

Not the most stylish of phones, but I got one through work and its actually a deadly job.
Elephone P8000. I think its a 5 inch screen, full hd.
Amazing camera (13M I think), long life battery (2 days easy with everything running), good responsive phone.
You'd get one for £120 I think.
Dual Sim as well and have an expandable memory slot.

If your not a brand snob, its a perfect Android phone.

Here's a link to the one I have, but there are newer models since.

Last year I bought the oneplus one as for the price the spec is unbelieveable up there with the samsungs and iphones of this world at half the price.
Advised the gf to get the oneplus two which was out about 4 months back and she loves it, its the upgrade on mine and normally I would change but I just dont see the point at the moment as this phone is so good and caused no problems.

I defo would consider looking at the oneplus range before you buy anything else because the value is so good.

People seem very quick to slate iPhones, maybe its due to the price? i have had one every time since they came out (company contract phones) and love them. i find them very user friendly and my only gripe with them is the battery life, but in saying that i can prob be sore on phone usage. i have a Macbook and it syncs very well with it, i get all my text messages and phone calls through it. suppose its down to individual preference really.

I had an iphone and my experience was only good especially if I had any problems with it, the build quality is excellent.
In saying that yes it is expensive and I feel you get more bang for your buck if you go for an android phone, also apple phones are quite restricitve in what they allow you do or download, I would use showbox and movies HD and this isnt an option due to security protection on apple so that's why I wouldnt go back to them (that and the price)

I'm thinking of ditching my iPhone 6S in favour of an iPhone 14, for no other reason than my 6S is about to keel over and my brother has a 14.

Whaddyallreckon?

I'd assume it would be a decent upgrade for you. I know very little about iphones. I see the 15 has launched and they are finally moving to USB type C. Other than that, most people say it's very similar to the 14
