BT Rannafast Cup semi-final :

St Patrick's Maghera 2-11       St Patrick's Dungannon            1-10 (AET)

St Patrick's Maghera needed extra time to edge out St Patrick's Dungannon in a thrilling BT Rannafast Cup semi-final yesterday afternoon.

Although Maghera led by four points at the end of the first half, Dungannon pressurised them in the third quarter and closed the gap to a single point.

With 10 minutes to go though Gerald Bradley fired to the Dungannon net to put his side four up.  The Academy dug deep and responded brilliantly to draw level with 1-1 from the excellent Ruairi McGlone.

With time running out Deasun Quinn gave them the lead only for Neil McNicholl to send the game into extra time with a very late score.

Disaster struck Dungannon in the first minute of extra time with Ruairi McGlone picking up a second yellow card and leaving his side a player down.

Maghera dominated the possession after that and at the start of the second period McNicholl grabbed a vital goal.

Although Quinn hit two frees to narrow the gap, Paul McAtamney fired over an insurance point for Maghera.

Maghera : Gerald Bradley 1-5, Neil McNicholl 1-3, Stephen O'Hara 0-1, Paul Gunning 0-1, Paul McAtamney 0-1.

Maghera were always in control, but Armagh got it back to three at one stage, then Emmet Bradley from afree and a point front Jack Kielt immediately after turned the game back in Maghera's favour and they ran out easy enough winners.

Do us a favour and rewrite them teams with the name of the das in instead. For example, I assume Paul Gunning is Gunner's chap and the two McAtamneys are Noddy's young boys.

Been living away from the area for a fair while and I reckon a lot of the fathers would be of a similar age to myself.

St Patrick's Maghera 2-8 Abbey CBS Newry 0-7

St Patrick's Maghera were crowned BT Rannafast Cup champions last night (Wed) at Omagh, where they turned on the style in the competition's first ever floodlit final.

A talented south Derry side defied difficult conditions to showcase many of the finer points of the game, in the process of maintaining a run of success which began five years ago on their arrival at the famous GAA nursery

Peter Cassidy and Stephen O'Hara scored the goals that laid the foundations for a victory which never looked in doubt, particularly when they turned around at the break three points ahead while playing into the gusting wind.

In the second half, athletic midfielder Neil McNicholl displayed immense energy and drive to get up and down Healy Park in tireless fashion, while his central partner O'Hara fetched with elegance and delivered with precision as he picked up a second provincial title in the space of four days, having helped Glen to the Ulster U16 crown at the weekend.

Playing into the wind, the south Derry lads took the game to their opponents right from the outset, and ease ahead when Gerald Bradley stroked over a couple of frees.

All the attacking thrust came from Maghera, and the deployment of full forward Brendan McKernan as a sweeper helped to hold and under-pressure Abbey defence together.

Dominic McFaul was at the centre of a neat move which saw midfielder Neil McNicholl make it three points to nil, before Cathal Foy's superb point opened the Newry account in the 13th minute.

They had their chances to narrow the gap further, but failed to capitalise, and in the 22nd minute, Maghera got in for a goal.

A sweeping move finished with Padraig Cassidy slipping the ball inside to full forward Peter Cassidy, and the Bellaghy man made no mistake from eight yards out.

Abbey finished the half strongly with points from Conal Gallagher and Conor Martin, but trailed by 1-3 to 0-3 at the break.

A Martin free brought the Abbey's only point of the third quarter, while St Pat's turned the screw with a volley of points, including a fine score from Bradley.

O'Hara's harmless effort from 40 metres was misjudged by 'keeper Tiarnan O'Brien for a fortuitous second goal, but that had no bearing on the outcome.

McKernan pushed forward into a playmaking role in the closing stages, but frequently found himself confronted by tigerish tackler Steven Coyle, as the Maghera lads closed up shop at the back.

Conal Gallagher and Donagh McAleenan also got little reward for their efforts to take on a Maghera defence in which full back Niall Gorman was outstanding, and all McKernan could manage was a couple of late frees.
