Rory putting everything perspective:

Rory McIlroy believes Donald Trump becoming US president for the second time could help "clear the way" for a peace deal in golf's civil war.
The four-time major winner also said the potential involvement of Elon Musk, a supporter of Trump and the owner of social media platform X, could speed up the process.

A sobering defeat for the Harris and the Democrats. Hard to have any at all sympathy given their sponsored slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza (not that Trump will be any better and will likely help build it back up for Israeli planters to move in). Harris supporting fracking would have driven away young voters too. I'd say next Irish government will not sit easy given the way US CEOs of major corporations won't want to cross him. Bezos and Tim Cook being prime  examples. The corporation tax gravy train could be over.

Early counting but if Trump loses North Carolina, he's done for.

So Tossfan was taking a victory lap for wokeism, when he shared that the Guards/Roscommon Herald stated that the suspects in the gang rape of a minor were not International Protection Applicants.

What he didn't share is that the alleged suspects are actually Roma welfare migrants  drawn to Ireland by overly generous welfare benefits

Now as an Irish citizen-I'm offended by that

Maybe you aren't

The issue is that when the far right come to town they make it about all refugees, which is why the Gardai had to release that statement. There's a shocking amount abuse of the people of Ballaghaderreen by the far right, calling them in-breds for jeering Dwyer and co. I grew up in Ballagh, family still lives there, and they are the most salt of the earth people you could find. Yes, we did have our arguments about football (Ros, Mayos, Sligo and sundry blow-ins) but we always supported each other. Ballagh stepped up to look after Syrian refugees. The real issue is the lack of investment in resources for the town. I remember when the Syrians first came to town, the poor kideens who had escaped terrible conditions were so delighted to play in the one slide tiny little playground in the old sportsgrounds and my kids and other locals played with them. That's humanity. What Dwyer and co are bringing is hate. And the people of Ballagh are not a hateful people.

I don't ever recall one word being spoken by anyone against the Syrians (and I have MidWest on 24/7)

But they were legit refugees who were fully vetted and fleeing an actual war

Unfortunately (for them) some became Mayo fans

Never heard a bad word spoken about any of the the Pakistanis who are big employers in the town. And a Pakistani lad is one of the best footballers in the town and won an AI U 21 with Mayo

There are bad people in all walks of life.

But speaking out about or highlighting the fact that bad government policies have encouraged undesirables to migrate to Ireland does not make one far right (unless your a proponent of open borders)

Don't disagree with the top part of your posts there at all. New arrivals have given the town a spark of life in many ways, particular around sport. When I say Far Right, I mean the agitators who came into town trying to stir up division, and then got the land of their lives when the local people did not want them there. They are now experts on X about Ballagh, and most of them can neither spell nor pronounce the town in English or Irish.

Quote from: bennydorano on November 05, 2024, 11:11:09 AMI hope Harris wins for the obvious reasons, but the mayhem that will ensue should be comedy gold.

If Trump wins, how long will it be before there's talk he deserves a 3rd term?? Constitutional matters don't really register in that camp I reckon.

I have a problem with no 3rd terms. US presidents are pretty much completely unaccountable during the 2nd term given that they're getting turfed out at the end of it anyway. Compared with prime ministers or Taoiseach who need majority support from their colleagues and always have an eye on the next election. As a result they're much more in tune with public opinion and the mid term consequences of their policy.

2nd term presidents are as close to dictators as you'll find in western democracy.

Although they often take a beating in the midterms and become a lame duck for final years because they lose either support of senate, congress or both, and can't get anything done. It's strange enough political system between electoral colleges and midterms

Locals had a silent protest, driven by the recent sexual assault of a child by non-national. The far right arrived to exploit tensions and were told to leave.

Not anywhere close. Giant's Causeway remains the only Irish horse to go close on the dirt.

Things well overshadowed there with death of Brian Meehan trained French horse Jayarebe, after the poor horse collapsed.

Last of the Summer Wine is in a class of gentle easy going comedy the Brits do well. I'd also put As Time Goes By in that category, with the late Geoffrey Palmer and Judi Dench just great character actors. There's often a melancholy undertone to these shows too. Type of comedy probably best watched with the last of a good glass of red wine.

Quote from: red hander on November 02, 2024, 05:25:17 PMLast of the Summer Wine was about as funny as a bad dose of piles. A dumping ground for elderly actors who had been out of work for years. Some oul ballix careering down a steep hill in a tin bath every week is not f**king comedy. Awful shite.

Ah now. The Loxley Lozenge was a classic.it was an old armchair if I recall.

Could Aidan O'Brien get his and I believe Ireland's first Breeders Cup Classic win with City of Troy? He went so close with the great Giant's Causeway in 2000, who was beaten by a nose.

A few things strike me there.

Your missus sounds very overwhelmed. Kids are a lot of work and women often take on a lot that goes unnoticed by us men.

Family coming to town is very stressful. Irish families have an awful habit of "we're coming for a visit" as if they are doing you a favour and expect to be put up and waited upon, and take forever to leave. Personally if I, wife and kids ever go to visit anyone, we make a point of staying in a nearby hotel or airbnb and not putting anyone out. Unfortunately my in laws have yet to get the message when it's their turn to visit. It can be very hard on a spouse and they often suffer in silence till sometime later when it just all comes out.

Finally, I think you should lighten up on the costume thing. Being a Dad means having to frequently make a right eejit of yourself in front of wife and kids. Kids will remember that with a smile forever.

Don't mean to sound harsh. Good luck with everything, Eamon.

Yes, Minister a great one too.

The English, the effers, do comedy well. Irish efforts at comedy often descend into stage Irish paddywhackery. We are much better at tragic drama and throwing a few jokes into the tragedy to help it along.

Always found Ab Fab very forced. All that "darling" this "darling" that. Much preferred Joanna Lumley as Purdey and couldn't get passed that.
