Open water swimming looks brutal!!

Would always have been hard for Wiffen to medal at his first attempt and in a shitty river.

The endurance and stamina these lads have is off the charts to contend with the conditions in that river.

I know we love chatting about how fit the GAA lads and they are amateur but f**k me the levels for some of those events is outrageous. Wiffen doing that at all today is amazing.

The 400m hurdles was an amazing thing to witness. I mean so so dominant. Hoping to see some decent performances on the track now. A final for Lavin and English would be great.
them mysterons are always killing me but im grand after a few days.sickenin aul dose all the same.

Ladies into a 400m relay final. Unreal stuff.

Captain Scarlet

I dunno if Bol will re-appear for the Dutch?Or is that wishful thinking?!

If Adeleke gets added in and can give one more push it'll be a great battle hopefully with the rest. Fair play to them already so a good performance is all we can ask.

Brilliant - I completely forgot about this.

GAA players obviously hugely fit but a very high percentage of the ones here would have this as their full time career. (not all granted). Loads of dedication for GAA especially at county level but if you want to be anywhere near the olympics your life would be revolving round whatever your discipline is.

Not going to start comparing lol but what a run by the girls, Adeleke be back for the final?

That was a terrific performance to qualify. Phil Healy put in a massive shift after being the weak link in Rome where, to be brutally honest, she was the difference between silver and gold. Becker and Mawdsley were both terrific as well. Adeleke, assuming nothing wrong with her and she's ok after tonight will come in for McGrory. Bol will come in for the Dutch and they and the Americans have silver and gold wrapped up already but bronze is up for grabs. Jamaica likely favourites for it, but we've an outside shot, along with the Brits.

I feel a touch sorry for Mawdsley as an athlete who is so exceptional in relays but just that touch off the truly top level in the individual event. A terrific servant.

Lavin ran well, just slower start for her in comparison to the winner in her next lane

David Gillick such a good interviewer trackside after races. Really understands what it takes to compete at that level and so encouraging and compassionate to the disappointed Irish athletes. Was great with Sarah Lavin there, and she appreciated it. Mol an óige...

Always feel for Lavin. She's just that wee bit short of top tenish in world kind of level. Absolutely fantastic but just that wee bit short of that absolute top level and it must be so gutting for her.

She also comes across as a really genuine decent person which makes you feel more for her.

Wiffen was both brave and naive. He can always say he did the 10k in the Olympics. He lost nothing giving it a go (other than a few extra nights on the beer in Paris).

Wiffen has a great sense of humour. Announced in interview he is retiring from Open Water. He's headed for a well deserved Guinness tonight.

(Just an opinion) but thought it would be way out this level and considering this was a debut finishing 18th was about right.

A gold and bronze is amazing though so he'll not matter that much tbf
