Looking ominous for Michaela Walsh.. Bulgarian better boxer.. just end of Round 1 but...

Pub Bore

Poor from Walsh, was never really in the fight.  Of the 10 Irish boxers, 8 lost in the first round.

Truthsayer

Michaela Walsh beat. No complaints better boxer won. 9 out of 10 Irish boxers gone (albeit 2 were very dubious judging). Just Kelly Harrington left... has at least a bronze.

Quote from: ShutterinbyDayGAAbyNight on August 02, 2024, 11:20:09 AMIt's like saying a basketballer shouldn't be allowed to play basketball because he is genetically tall.

No it isn't. This is a tired and boring argument brought out by the ill informed that was particularly prevalent in relation to Semenya.

There is no protected category in basketball for people who aren't tall, therefore being tall is no reason to prohibit someone from participating.

Women's sport is a protected category, for good reason. The question then is "what is a woman?", a question people have been avoiding for years and continue to.

If Khelif is a woman, (a "biological female") who naturally produces high levels of testosterone, then so be it. If she's DSD, and produces high levels of testosterone due to a genetic abnormality, then it's altogether more murky a grey area, just like the Semenya case. The suggestion has been that she has XY chromosomes. Regardless of her physiology, she absolutely doesn't deserve dickheads on the internet who spend their lives w**king away on Twitter accusing her of being a pervert.
Honestly thought with all the stuff online that Khelif was born and man, in which case in no way should be allowed to fight a woman. However he/she? was born a woman but has a disorder meaning he/she produces much higher levels of testosterone. A lot more of a grey area than a man deciding one day to "become" a woman. Seemingly doesn't have a huge advantage either given that Kellie Harrington beat Khelif at the last games?

Believing all that stuff online is the biggest pile of lazy shite a lot of people do.. The second she says I seen this on tiktok I'm rolling the eyes and walking away!

I can see why the headline confuses people (and guilty at times) but dig a bit deeper and hey presto

Tate makes a clean living off the back of that stuff and people are gullible enough to eat it up ;)

When you scratch the surface to this there is so much to it. There's talk that Semenya has "internal testicles" and things like that (there are articles on it which I suspect are accurate too). This is very nuanced and like anything in the world these days has been polarised hugely. Trans in sport is a very different thing to this. I really don't think Rowling, who I don't generally mind, or the likes of Sharron Davies(who I would have my doubts about anyway) have helped this and dare I say it the Italian was in a boxing match and complained about being hit too hard which didn't help either  :(

Pity about Walsh too. Had hoped for more from the boxers but at least we have the swimming and the rowing now... Hopefully Harrington can get gold again.

The more I think about it the more I think I am not sure we will see any athletics medals at all. Maybe Adeleke at a push but Mageean is really up against it and with Adeleke not in the mixed 4x400 and not in the earlier rounds of the 400 I think that will make it tougher for the relays.

Pub Bore

Mageean will do well to make the final.  Realistically Adeleke is an outside chance for a medal.  My gut tells me we won't win a medal in the track & field.

Doing well in the Europeans is one thing. But when you add the Americas, Africa and the Asians, even Australia and New Zealand, you are into a different sphere of top athletes.

But you never know.......

She should make the final as she was fourth in the world last year but yeah I think the same on the track and field - unsure we will medal.

Capt Pat

I reckon Adeleke will get a medal maybe even gold.

Milltown Row2

Some finish for Ireland in the mixed 400 relay, needed an extra 20 meters to catch the 4th place athlete possible fastest qualifier they said
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

The fellas were the big weak links in that relay team. Mawdsley ran a hell of a last leg but had far too much to do. We'd have qualified with Adeleke.

What's happened Irish amateur boxing? Has it went backwards significantly or what's going on?

Lot of decent talent probably doesn't bother with the corrupt shower of c***ts now I'd imagine.

gallsman

Super, effortless stuff again from Wiffen. Anything other than gold would be a shock at this stage, and the WR could be on.

Some ridiculously fast tones in the first round of the men's 100m Kishane Thompson ran 9.99 and he shut it down at 50m lylea looked as if he was struggling a bit coming in behind the young Brit Hinchcliffe who ran 9.97.
