If the 2026 format was in play this year, it would have meant the 8 provincial finalists (Kerry, Clare, Louth, Meath, Galway, Mayo, Donegal, Armagh) were drawn at home to Dublin, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tyrone, Derry, Cavan, Cork, Down.

8 winners of that round would play each other for a 1/4 final place.

8 losers would play each other for right to play 4 losers above for a 1/4 place.

So you could still be in championship after 2 losses, but not 3. So an improvement of sorts. But lack of seeding in for example Munster means someone bound to get an easier Round 1 draw.

Cavan should have got promoted to Div 1. They outplayed us in the Hyde and then somehow lost to Cork at home (whose own league form was poor and were in danger of demotion at one stage). Very unpredictable team. I listened to the game on Midwest. 1-2 in added time put a bit of a gloss on the scoreline for Mayo. Poor weekend overall for Connacht football. Galway are still a good team, but Mayo and Ros look in trouble already. Congrats to Cavan.

A few more Irish related ones:

Mirrors - Sally Oldfield (Mike's sister, born in Dublin, their Ma was Irish)

Can't Help Falling in Love - Lick the Tins - an excellent cover one hit wonder that kept regaining popularity from later film soundtracks

MacArthur Park - Richard Harris (a man of many talents)

Quote from: ardtole on May 15, 2025, 11:08:24 AMI'd put money on Ger Brennan to be Dublin manager for 2026, if paddy power are offering odds.

Paddy Andrews (despite his high admiration for Ger) didn't take too kindly to the suggestion on the Football Pod.

We have a manager, sez Paddy, a two-time All-Ireland winning manager.

Quote from: AustinPowers on May 08, 2025, 11:26:12 AMDid the Sultans of Ping  have any other hits other than Wheres Me Jumper?

That one just  came to me. Would definitely be in my top three

If you go by UK charts they and a lot of Irish bands including Hothouse Flowers, the Frank and Walters, maybe even Clannad, would be one hit wonders.

Forgot to mention Jilted John (Gordon is a Moron) which caused a lot of bad blood between Ros and Kerry in 1978 when a gang of young lads changed the words to Ogie is a Moran in the CeannĂ¡ras Cup final that preceded the All-Ireland U21 final.

A few 70s one hit wonders (I think but there's always that obscure 2nd hit. Even Toto had one)

Rock the Boat - The Hues Corporation
Where do you go to my lovely? - Peter Sarstedt (an ode to the lonely Sophia Loren?)
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

Just wondering

Meat Loaf himself was at one stage a vegetarian. Speaking of vegetarians, surprised no requests for those Irish-Mancunians The Smiths.

The Smiths are on  the 'to do'  list

Good stuff, Austin.

Quote from: Cortoon on May 04, 2025, 11:16:50 PMFlat track bully. Easy to go to town on a team like Clare.

Munster final, should he go easy? Bizarre comment
Let's see how he gets on against Div 1 teams.
😂 😂 😂
We have seen. He demolishes everyone and gets where he wants.

Side Note: I don't think Kerry have to face any 2025 division 1 teams in their group this year (I could be wrong) ?

Well we did get promoted, but in our last 6 games:

Lost to Galway - by 9 points
Lost to Monaghan- by 10 points
Drew with Westmeath
Lost to Cavan - by 3 points
Beat Cork - by 14 points
Lost to Meath - by 7 points

So I doubt David Clifford or Jack O'Connor will be having sleepless nights over the next two weeks. That said, Brian Stack who has been injured for most of the league, usually has his measure - if he is back to full fitness. We live in hope.

Galway wanted that more. Mayo had a great opportunity to win after reeling in fairly quickly Galway's 8 point lead. They had huge momentum and Paddy, probably making up for the soft penalty, was giving them a lot of decisions. But credit to both teams. It was a great game, chaotic, mistake ridden which added to the entertainment. Tough on Kevin McStay - might be last opp to win a Connacht title with his native county. But he'll have an easier first game in All-Ireland Series than Joyce.

Shocker that goal was disallowed, neither square ball or a foul. Great come back by the young Rossies to almost win in the end. Gave it their all. On the balance of play and overall competition, can't begrudge Mayo. If they tighten up at the back, they have the scoring power to go all the way.

Fair play to Paul Weller, Pulp and the other artists who've come out in support of Kneecap.

Quote from: Rossfan on April 29, 2025, 04:13:58 PMIf they kick it over their own end line, the 45 has to be taken.

Happened the poor Louth lad against Kildare. Belted it out over the endline to exasperated looks from his teammates. Fortunately, for him, Kildare were not able to capitalise.

Quote from: trileacman on April 27, 2025, 10:49:59 PMStill think there'll be a number of easy groups due to the dearth of quality teams around at the minute. Derry could yet end up in a group where they are the best team. One of Louth/Meath are supposedly a top 4 team and one of Louth/Meath and Clare are supposedly a top 8 team.

There's some seriously poor teams around at the minute. Tyrone, Mayo, Dublin, Kerry, Monaghan and Derry are all shadows of the teams they've fielded over the last 10 years. Which would be no bad thing if their was a few 2nd tier teams coming up to challenge them but Roscommon, Cavan, Down, Fermanagh, Laois, Clare, Cork and Westmeath are all standing still if not in regression.
love to get a easy team like Derry as third seeds in our group.

If you get Derry, it will be as a 4th seed after you relegated Dublin to 3rd seeds yesterday (congrats). Your easy 3rd seed might be Dublin again.
