Quote from: 03,05,08 on Today at 01:47:17 PMThe Poor people in the 26 getting called bad names when they have a partitionist mindset, I'm not going to sleep tonight with the guilt of all they have had to endure.

Again, just throw out shite like this but cry your lamps out when so much as a murmur is raised by someone in the south not wanting Mary Lou to be their overlord.

Where did I say anything about my opinion on Martin's comments?

My point is that morons from the north are quick to throw out insults like west brit, free stater, blueshirt etc without a) understanding what they actually mean and b) considering whether they're actually applicable, then immediately jump to outrage when someone from the south says "eh, maybe you're not quite my type".

"He's a west brit because because because, em, his condemnation of Martin's remarks didn't satisfy me". Grow the f**k up.

General discussion / Re: Price of a Pint
My frame of reference is always that I left Belfast for college in Dublin in 2005. On nights out in town you'd pay 5e a drink in a busy bar or nightclub, whether that be a pint or a short with mixer. In a regular city centre pub (as in not student central and hopping at night) you might pay anywhere from 4.50 to 5.50 a pint. Going home to Belfast, the likes of the Bot, the Eg, the King's Head and the Errigle were all in and around the £2.50 mark for a pint. The fact that pretty much all these and similar places are £6 plus these days, while you can still get a decent pint in the centre of Dublin for under 6e, tells you everything.

Quote from: gallsman on Today at 12:52:51 PMCherry picking and whataboutery FFS. Being disgusted at the likes of the killing of Jerry McCabe makes you a west brit because, and I admit the logic is starting to get lost on me here, he didn't also bring up Dublin/Monaghan? You do understand that it's SF who are a political force in the south and not the UPRG or LCC or whoever, yes?!
I don't care bout SF one way or other... point is Martin warned against two sides analysis of the Troubles totally ignoring actions carried out by loyalists/British State. How can that analysis be defended? Of course there were terrible actions carried out by both sides... was not IRA waging war on its own people as Martin's comments suggested that Rossfan tried to defend. It's not that hard follow?

He called Martin's comment "ridiculous" but mentioned him having a point about provo activity in the south. Where's the controversy here?

There it is again. He's a West Brit. Why and how exactly? Because he doesn't agree with every position put forward by people from the north?

Once again, that wasn't me. Try to keep up there, like a good lad.

Quote from: Armagh18 on October 08, 2023, 09:45:01 PMKingsmill was awful, but again if you've any understanding of what was happening you'll know why it happened and why it had to be done. Doubt you'll find too many pitying the pedo Mountbatten...

There you go. Try and spin it whatever way you want.

I call people nordies multiple times per week, do I?

Or perhaps, in your rush to fly off the handle yet again and continue your "how dare those free state bastards so much as question the purity of our cause" narrative have confused me with another poster?

As for the Kingsmill point, it was to serve the argument that maybe, just possibly maybe, someone from the 26 who gets called a blueshirt by someone on the record as thinking Kingsmill was necessary might not feel too much in common with them other than being born on the same island and that for them unity might just be more than the simple issue presented to them so frequently.

Quote from: Tubberman on December 05, 2024, 10:26:34 PMPeople in the south get labelled as traitors, west brits, blueshirts, free staters etc.
Only those for whom such labels fit.

Given you're pointing out untruths, this is categorically untrue. Only a couple of pages ago we had an Armagh dickhead throw out the blueshirt insult whilst simultaneously demonstrating a clear lack of understanding of what it actually means. Same poster had previous described Kingsmill as "needing to happen" so I guess, as you say, if the shoe fits...

Quote from: Rossfan on December 05, 2024, 06:46:52 PMI run down the Shinners but I'm not trying to unite with them.

Care to enlighten us as to who you voted for yourself, Rossfan?
Starts with blue and ends with shirt I would guess

Given he's spent most of the election thread opposing twats attempting to legitimise the far right, I'd be pretty surprised if that was the case.

This is part of the problem. People throw around insults like "blueshirt" without having the slightest notion about what it actually means. The significance of it gets consigned to history and it gets adopted as a meaningless slogan by ignorant morons.

General discussion / Re: Man Utd Thread:
December 05, 2024, 08:54:55 AM
United fans at risk of overhyping the first half performance. Arsenal's xG was four times that of United, and then second half was a completely different story.

No gaping chasms down the middle any more though, which is instantly noticeable.

Amorim has said it'll take years and it'll be down to how much big sir Jim is willing to invest as the squad still needs overhauled. Hojlund is yet to convince and Zirkzee is a donkey. Antony was utterly appalling when he came on. Yoro looked solid on his debut and if Amad keeps developing, he could be the future of the attack for years to come.

Quote from: Turf on December 04, 2024, 09:27:33 PMThe draw probably the fair result but that's gutting not to win.
Poor decision by Kelleher to let the ball go out for a goalkick.

He wasn't great for the second goal either.

GAA Discussion / Re: AFL Invasion

Posturing, nothing more. Even if the GAA were to try and negotiate something with the AFL on a voluntary basis, I'm not sure it's a good look.

General discussion / Re: General Election 2024
December 03, 2024, 11:48:59 AM
Quote from: imtommygunn on December 03, 2024, 11:16:23 AMFor me this election was a decent one for SF. Ultimately they will have wanted power yes but it was still a strong one for them.

I say none of this as a pro SF person  ;)

It depends on what your point of reference is. If looking at polls in the months before the election, then yes, they've done excellently and have recovered a lot of lost ground. They've also picked up two more seats than last time, but given the increase in the size of the Dail, that shouldn't be overstated.

If your point of reference is the previous election, then it would be reasonable to consider that there might be disappointment, or a sense of underperformance. Their first preference share dropped significantly, and they've failed to make inroads against the incumbent, inept, incompetent administration.

Can spin it either way. The reality of it is somewhere in the middle.
