Why is he doing this?

Well he's obviously an adrenaline junky, he's after the records. But a husband of one of the astronauts who died in the Columbia accident is the medical director, and they are hoping, if he survives, Nasa can certify a new generation of suits which would provide an escape option at high altitude. Also it will be the first time the human body has been directly exposed to the shock waves of breaking the sound barrier, so they have him rigged up to measure it all. But mostly it's for the hell of it!!!

Good post Fionntamhnach.

is it a good post because you agree with him? A little solidarity.  There are many many folk out there who have kids who shouldn't, of that there is no argument. Those who do have that special bond will think differently. How can you not? You will understand when / if you do.

Man fathers a child, never has anything to do with the boy. Another man comes into the mother's life when the child is less than 6 months old. 13 years later boy calls that man Dad, and is the only father he ever knew. Do you think that man doesn't feel the same things other fathers here feel when they read these stories? Does he feel more than the biological father who was at the birth, but never had anything to do with him?

It's complicated is all, we shouldn't make presumptions about each other's qualifications to make judgements and how we feel just based on our own experiences.

Hence why I thought it was a good post.

who says I presume the man in question doesn't?  I didn't differentiate between  biological fathers or non-biological fathers. I've only spoken of the bond between a loving father and child.

You asked me why I thought it was good, so I did. I didn't presume anything of you personally.

General discussion / Re: Rory McIlroy

Saw the article this morning and thought "dear oh dear". What a hamfisted attempt to get him on board. Then I saw it was Pat Hickey and was no longer surprised. I think Mr. Hickey got it the wrong way round, from a purely financial view whoever gets Rory on board will make a fortune. In the greater scheme of things that boon would be worth more the Irish Olympic committee than Team GB, but is not so inconsiderable that it's not a factor for them too. Expect the toadying to continue until McIlroy puts Hickey and Co. out of their misery.

Man dies after winning cockroach-eating contest

THE winner of a cockroach-eating contest in Florida has died shortly after downing dozens of the live bugs as well as worms, authorities said.

About 30 contestants ate the insects during a contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach, about 40 miles north of Miami. The grand prize was a python.

Edward Archbold, 32, became ill shortly after the contest ended and collapsed in front of the store, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office statement.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities are waiting for results of a port-mortem examination to determine a cause of death.

None of the other contestants became ill, the sheriff's office said.

"We feel terribly awful," said store owner Ben Siegel, who added that Mr Archbold did not appear to be sick before the contest.

"He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice," Mr Siegel said, adding that Archbold was "the life of the party".

Mr Siegel added that Archbold was selling the exotic prize to a friend who took him to the contest.

A statement from Mr Siegel's lawyer said all the participants signed waivers "accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest".

The bugs consumed were from an inventory of insects "that are safely and domestically raised in a controlled environment as food for reptiles".

Michael Adams, professor of entomology at the University of California at Riverside, said he had never heard of someone dying after eating cockroaches.

"Unless the roaches were contaminated with some bacteria or other pathogens, I don't think that cockroaches would be unsafe to eat," he said.

"Some people do have allergies to roaches, but there are no toxins in roaches or related insects."

I think the judgement of people who have kids is completely clouded and they therefore cannot think rationally on this subject.
You have kids so you cannot fully understand.

Steven Gerrard reveals his admiration for rising Liverpool star Jonjo Shelvey

ENGLAND captain Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool team-mate Jonjo Shelvey's call-up to Roy Hodgson's squad is just reward for the progress he has made at Anfield.

The 20-year-old, who has made 46 first-team appearances since joining from Charlton two summers ago, was promoted from the under-21s to the senior side yesterday.

Gerrard has watched the youngster develop around the edges of the squad and this season Shelvey has been in decent form with three goals in his last two Europa League matches.

"I'm really pleased for Jonjo," Gerrard said.

"He has been improving all the time since he arrived at Liverpool and has grown into a good footballer with good vision who can create and score goals.

"He also listens which means he will only get better with more games and experience."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sees a lot of promise in Shelvey and hopes his England experience will enhance his progress.

"Jonjo is an example of how the young players have been developing at the club," he said.

"There's a real big future here for those young players and Jonjo is one of them.

"He has shown in the early stages of the season that he will play a prominent role in the development of the team over the next couple of years.

"To get called into the full England squad is testament to what he's done so far. It will be a great experience for him.

"He's gone down there to work with some top players and that can only benefit him. Hopefully he will come back a better player."

Liverpool's Luis Suarez is being 'vilified', says Brendan Rodgers
By Frank Keogh BBC Sport

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has defended Luis Suarez following fresh accusations he dives to win penalties.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis wants the striker banned for trying to con referees while pundit Alan Hansen is also critical.

But Rodgers said: "At this moment, there seems to be one set of rules for Luis and another set for everyone else.

"I believe some people need to develop a sense of perspective and I also believe in this moment the vilification of Luis is both wrong and unfair."

Pulis called on the Football Association to punish Suarez for what he claims was a dive during Sunday's goalless draw at Anfield.

Pulis said a three-game ban would stop the Uruguayan from "falling over".

Hansen agrees that Suarez has a tendency to go to ground when challenged but added that the player was not the only one to make life hard for officials.

"There's no doubt about it that he goes down very, very easily," the former Liverpool and Scotland defender told BBC Sport. "But the English game is littered with players who go down easily.

"I think his reputation precedes him. It's really, really difficult for the referee to decide if contact has been made. When there's minimal contact, he's got to try to stay on his feet.

"Something has got to be done. I'm not talking particularly about Luis Suarez. Especially this season, we have seen tons of players go over when there is no contact or very little contact.

"If you are going over under no pressure at all, the authorities have to clamp down on it. The big problem is I can watch on television an incident 15 times and not work out if there's contact."

Rodgers told Liverpool's official website that Suarez is often the victim of cynical fouls.

"As manager of this football club, I find it incredible that in nearly all the coverage about Luis Suarez this weekend, very little focus has been placed on the fact that he was actually the victim of a stamping incident within the first five minutes of the game," he told liverpoolfc.com.

"Diving and simulation is obviously a wider issue in football and one that we all agree has to be eradicated from our game but there were other incidents this weekend that didn't seem to generate the same coverage.

"No-one should be distracted by the real issue here, both at Anfield and at another game played on Sunday, when Luis and another player were hurt in off-the-ball incidents that went unpunished but were caught on TV cameras."

Hansen said Suarez's reputation means he is not winning legitimate penalties either.

"Three weeks on the trot Suarez should have had penalty kicks, culminating in the one at Norwich where he was hit from behind, hit on the head, and pushed over," said Hansen, who was speaking at an event to mark the Football Pools' 90th year.

"On each occasion, the guy that made the tackle ran after the referee and said he was diving. It's very difficult for him to get a penalty kick.

"It will be interesting to see the next six to eight weeks whether Suarez gets a penalty anywhere.

"What's happening now is referees, in my opinion, aren't giving a legitimate penalty claim. The first question they are asking themselves is 'has he dived?' I don't think they are asking themselves whether that guy has made contact."

Hansen believes diving is a widespread problem.

"It's a culture that has developed in the game. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was a lot more honest," he said.

I feel for the poor Liverpool fans, they seem to spend most of their forum time on this topic and not the one associated with the team they actually support.  I suppose when you are near the bottom of the table and the team is going worse than it was even last year then there isn't a lot to cheer about.

Talk about pot and kettle - comic genius!

The irony.  Point proven.  How many of the last 3 or 4 posters have been Liverpool fans?

Point far from proven, that post was about, pointing out your own penchant for posting on the Liverpool thread at any given opportunity. I rarely post on this thread, I did the other week in response to AZ not realizing Vidic's latest injury didn't occur during the Utd. Pool game I.e. not about United themselves. Other than that I leave yee to yourselves really, but you were just taking the piss with that comment.

I wonder what the evidence is against this guy ? You would imagine there must be some forensics linking the child to the car.

The kid was in his car during the week before she was abducted

I didnt know that. If no body the case could be flimsy.

Either that or they have stronger forensic evidence i.e. stronger than just proving her presence in the vehicle
