I really think it was time that the whole issue of fixture scheduling was re-assessed by the GAA. The whole club series should be started 2 weeks earlier and the AI club series finished off before Christmas. The GAA is still rooted to old ideals of playing the club finals on St Patricks day but its ludicrous to play AI club semi finals 12 weeks after the previous round. Asking players to train maybe 30-40 times for one match is completely ridiculous, imagine trying to explain that to someone who knew nothing about the sport. Also any momentum that a team had built up before Christmas is gone by the time they play again in mid February.

If the AI Intercounty series was scheduled to finish the 1st week of September that would free up 3 full months to play off the club series which should be more than adequate.

Onion Bag

you are 100% correct, I have argued this for a long long time,
Hats, Flags and Head Bands!

Corkey22

Agree, its as if they drag the whole thing out just for the novelty of playing it on St Patrick's Day

Yes lads I can see where you are going, but as a club man watching your team walk out on at Croke Park on St Paddy's day is the best feeling in the world. We've been there a couple of times on Paddy's day, some craic.

There are a few posters here who have had that day out, they will all say the same thing, but on reflection believe it may need changing, but if a player has that chance to play in Croke Park, they'll want that feeling on any day of the year but Paddy's day is something else

Nevermind the feelings that MR2 describes above but the reality is that even within counties there is far too much fixture congestion.  The only way to run the whole lot, club and county, off in a single calender year is to scrap the back door system at club and county level and start the club championships at a sensible time. For example, the Armagh championship doesn't start until August!  I think Down is similar.

Simply saying that starting the games earlier also fails to comprehend how difficult it is to play/train in November, the club finals are to be the showcase for the 'grass-roots' and people want to relegate them to potential mudbaths?  And that would just be the football, would it be right to have the best club hurlers playing in a quagmire? I think what might be more feasible is that the county schedule be changed back to the way it used to be in terms of the National League and then bring forward the championship by 3-4 weeks with AI finals being played at the end of August/early September.  Scrap the McKenna cup etc and simply have NL games running Oct/ November and Feb/March.

The club finals are played in Croke Park so they won't be played in a quagmire no matter what time of the year they're run off.
Keep your pecker hard and your powder dry and the world will turn.

I'm all for running it off in a calender year and would be in favour of the backdoor system being changed to an open draw. But getting counties to run off their championships before the end of September is going to be difficult, the counties left in the latter stages of the the All Ireland will not have their players available for clubs, counties would also need to have straight knockout championships instead of group stages, so many things to change.

And then you run the provincial championships and get them finished before when? The pitches are shite in November and December
