Through into the last eight in the Carling Cup, in Ramos' first match:

Tottenham 2 Blackpool 0
By Mike McGrath, PA Sport

Tottenham started the Juande Ramos era by reaching the Carling Cup quarter-final at the expense of Blackpool - but the new boss was shown how tough his new job will be.

Robbie Keane grabbed the opener in the 18th minute at White Hart Lane and Pascal Chimbonda sealed the win with a second-half header, but Spurs were rattled in between.

The Coca-Cola Championship side hit the crossbar through Gary Taylor-Fletcher, who was also denied by a stunning Paul Robinson save.

It took less than a minute for Ramos to start stalking his technical area, pointing instructions to a defence that looked short on confidence.

Blackpool, 20th in their division, sensed their opportunity and started with pace, and only Younes Kaboul's block prevented Robinson being called into action after Keigan Parker was sent down the right channel. Robinson flapped at the resulting corner.

There was more fluency going forward, and Didier Zokora had their first effort on goal but his long-range drive angled wide.

Dimitar Berbatov set Aaron Lennon off down the right and his low cross was cleared just as Robbie Keane was ready to pounce for his ninth goal of the season.

It was at the back where Spurs continued to panic. Keane gave the ball away to Parker who played David Fox through to fire into the side-netting after forcing a mistake from Kaboul.

Keane added to his impressive tally in the 18th minute, clipping over goalkeeper Paul Rachubka from Berbatov's flick-on.

Ramos barely flinched, acknowledging the goal by pointing at Robinson, whose long punt had set up the opener.

Steed Malbranque and Zokora were off target with wild long-range efforts and Jenas got a little closer, while the visitors looked to test Spurs' nervy defence.

The home fans held their breath when Robinson came rushing out to clear a long ball but he got enough on the ball to avoid another blunder, even if it was an ugly slice to the touchline.

Keane failed to connect with a scissor-kick after Kaboul broke from defence and Lennon crossed from the right.

HT: Tottenham 1 Blackpool 0

Blackpool started the second half looking to rattle the hosts and Gary Taylor-Fletcher smacked the crossbar with a header from Parker's cross within two minutes of the restart.

Keane should have added a second when he raced through and chipped wide and he was nearly made to rue his miss as Robinson somehow flung himself to keep out Taylor-Fletcher's next effort, which was headed for the top corner.

Just as the visitors were gaining momentum, Pascal Chimbonda headed in Spurs second. Malbranque's corner found the full-back unmarked at the far post and the France international thudded home his header.

Jermain Defoe came on for Keane after the hour mark and almost scored with his first touch, only for Rachubka to tip over the crossbar.

Ramos also looked at Darren Bent off the bench as well as Teemu Tainio at right-back after taking off Kaboul, suggesting there will be changes before long.

Two goals (once again the Robster is in electrifying goalscoing form this season) and more importantly a clean sheet, very significant when we have conceded three goals to shite like Fulham this season

Definitely an improvement

Ah come on Tony. If you're going to start a new thread after each Spurs win we'll have at least 3 by the end of the season. Merge this with the Official Spurs Thread.

I have decided to attend the EGM at the Lane on November 26th, at which Levy is to speak about the Jol affair. Thats two AGM's, Celtic and Spurs, Glasgow and London, in the space of seven days. Is it any wonder I'm thinking of relinquinishing my financial stake in football clubs? ;D

Received in post this morning. Complimentary 125 Year commemorative jersey (the blue and white one as worn in the recent match with Villa), priced at £55, just for taking out an MBNA Tottenham Hotspur Credit Card, with interest free on balance transfers for a year as well! Not bad, eh? ;D

It must have cost them quite a bit in postage, i would imagine it was a bulky item.

Cracking goal all the same from Luke Young for Boro, another player, along with Pedro Mendes etc, that should never have been let go from the Lane. We simply must beat Wigan at home next Saturday

Good interview with MJ in to-day's Sunday Times. He reckons he may well be back managing Spurs one day (didn't Glen Hoddle say the same) and spoke very eloquently about how he feels his strength is buying and developing young players and he felt that this would ultimately have paid dividends. Also said he had no idea during the game with Getafe that he was going to be sacked.

See the legendary Jimmy Greaves has said that the Board must resign if the Ramos move doesn't work out. Quite right

Greavsie is quite an authority these days, what with the alcohol pickled brain of his, a funny old game indeed......

As posted on that other thread, but with the actual title, rather than lame smartarse efforts at humour:

Tottenham plan stadium expansion

By Mihir Bose
BBC sports editor

Tottenham have turned to a man who played a major role in the development of Arsenal's Emirates Stadium to help them build a venue of similar quality.

Tony Winterbottom, formerly of the London Development Authority, is now masterminding plans to expand Spurs' White Hart Lane ground to about 52,000.

The project would cost in the region of £300m of which £150m would be borrowed.

But it would mean Spurs having to vacate White Hart Lane for two seasons, and may have to share with West Ham.

A couple of years ago Tottenham were very keen to become permanent tenants at Wembley but the Football Association did not want that.

Now Tottenham have again approached Wembley to inquire about playing some of their matches there while they rebuild White Hart Lane.

But Wembley want a lot of money to hire the stadium and Tottenham may only consider it worthwhile that top matches, such as the derby with north London rivals Arsenal, are played there.

So they have also spoken to West Ham, with a view to playing the less high-profile matches at Upton Park.

The problem with West Ham is that the Hammers are themselves thinking about building a new stadium, so that might complicate things too.

Another solution might be to share the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal but that seems fraught with difficulty, particularly with the present rivalry between the fans.

Consequently, there is also talk of Tottenham playing some matches at a ground outside London.

But while rebuilding White Hart Lane is the preferred option for Spurs, there are two other alternatives that are being considered.

One is to develop some land just north of White Hart Lane.

This would mean Tottenham would continue to play at White Hart Lane while the new stadium was built.

Or they could develop one of a couple of possible sites in Enfield, but that would mean a new stadium quite some distance from their current ground. Redeveloping White Hart Lane is definitely the number one choice and Paul Phillips, a project manager at Emirates, is also helping Tottenham.

Spurs have also got high-powered architect Ken Shuttleworth, who is the right-hand man of Norman Foster, whose company designed the new Wembley, on board.

It was stated by Levy at the AGM in January that there would be a decision taken in the next 12 monts to either build at a green field site or redevelop WHL.I am delighted that we are staying at the Lane, it is and always will be our spiritual home. Hope they extend the underground link though as it is not the easiest of places to get to.

It will certainly be the finest stadium in the Championship.

Not a hope. "Transport for London" has made it quite clear that any such extension is not even on their list of priorities, never mind near the top, and Levy will never dedicate the tens of millions (minimum) necessary from THFC's resources.

This is because Levy (ENIC's) strategy is quite clear. Having seen how other clubs have left Spurs far behind in the race to maximise their value in the race to find an American or Asian billionaire to sell up to, Levy is now going all out to get the share price up and do the same. That is, it isn't enough to wait whilst the young players (Huddlestone, Dawson, Lennon etc) eventually get the club into a Top Four place. Nor were they prepared to give Jol the time and budget he required.  Quite simply, the Board is demanding that Ramos gets Spurs into the Champions League in the shortest possible time, thereby adding another £100-150 million to the club's share value. That way, they can sell at the top of the market, so that Billionaire Joe Lewis can die in the Bahamas even richer, with Levy (rumoured always to have been a Gooner!), able to salt away his generous share of the profits in some other tax exile.

As such, like the recent paltry dividend paid to gullible Shareholders following the club's recent results, this intention to extend WHL should be seen as merely the cheapest option open to the Board in giving the impression of being a "big" club. Otherwise, no Billionaire is going to be persuaded to hand over £500m+ for a club which only has a capacity of 36k. Therefore, Levy will effect the cheapest possible extension, sell up, and leave some other bugger, or the fans, to worry how the extra crowds are ever going to get to the ground in time for kick-off... :o
