Corrupted ipod

Any time I try to update my ipod I get a message about it being corrupted and returning it to factory settings which means I'll lose everything i've saved to it.  I have all my tunes saved on my Windows media player as well, if I restore the ipod is there a simple way to get my music back from the media player to the ipod??
