They played as Queen's County in the 1915 final, didn't they?

No, at that time the town that won the county final represented the county.  Ballygeeghan (Ballacolla) was who represented Laois.
For the Semi-Final one player walked from Portlaoise to Ballyroan to milk cows before training and then walked on to Abbeyleix to meet up with his team.

Laois was once known as Queens County many years ago, as Offaly was known as Kings County.
However, the men of Laois and Offaly took no shit even back then and both counties kicked the Brits and anything to do with them out of the place.
Britain does cling on to ownership of other counties but not Laois or Offaly though.

Anybody know when the practice of the county champions stopped representing the county for the intercounty All-Irelands?

1972. In Laois anyway. My town, Ballinakill, won the 1973, 74 and 75 U-21 Hurling Finals in a row, contested Intermediate and Senior Finals and had no players on the County team because they were not from Portlaoise or knew the selection committee, or were not good enough at fighting or getting sent off.  >:(

1892. It was wound down, though. Teams would pick one or two of the best of opposing teams, but eventually these selections morphed into full-blown county teams.
