GAA Discussion / Re: Dublin v Tyrone
February 04, 2007, 03:07:50 PM
Was expecting Dublin to win that match and had a wee fear Tyrone might get a pasting so have to be happy with the comeback and win. Good victory to get Tyrone started in the league and hopefully the next few weeks will see a number of the key men returning to the starting 15 and make for a stronger all round panel than last season.
As people have said nothing is won in February but still nice to have the 2 points on the board and a wee boost for morale to come back and win from being well behind :)

If Maloney came out and said he wanted to run down his contract and then look at his options I think most would accept that as well within his rights, whilst not being happy with his decision. However he didn't, he hummed and hawed and when one agent had more or less agreed a deal with Celtic he dropped him and hired another. Again they were near a deal and then, low and behold, he was off to Villa. At least Brown came out this week after removing his transfer request and said he intended to run down his contract and then consider his options. I don't think Celtic fans have a problem with MON or Villa (especially after they paid 1 million for him) so the fact that you say Celtic fans are hypocritics for "having a go at Maloney" even though their club signs other players on Bosmans is factually incorrect.

Move as far away as u like from the party line, but there's no need for every post on SPL matters to include a dig at Celtic. Like I said, u don't like them, we get it, move on.

Of course its not factually incorrect, Celtic fans have a history of throwing a hissy fit when a young player leaves them yet they welcome similar players from other clubs with open arms. Its not the kind of point which could be factually correct or incorrect.
As for the second point only the most paranoid Celtic fan would claim every post I make has a dig at them. All I was doing earlier in this thread was raising a point about the Maloney thing...your "u don't like them, we get it, move on." line was irrelevant, uncalled for and also a strange to say on a discussion forum. Is this KWB with a new username??

Anyway Celtic cruising through to the last 8 of the cup today and looks like a very open competition, the draw will be interesting.

U misread what I said, the fact that Hartley signed a deal ensured that Hearts could be able to sell him (I'm sure he had his own interests first). This is not a like for like comparision with Maloney.

You don't like the two big clubs from Glasgow, we get it, move on.

My feelings towards the Old Firm are hardly relevant, I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of Celtic fans having a go at Maloney for exercising his right to run down his contract and move on given how often they do the same thing to other clubs.

Once again a siege mentality from some Celtic fans on this board with anybody who dares to move away from the party line getting it in the neck.

Poor form from Maloney, repeated what Miller did before him. Except Celtic stood by him during his cruciate and this is how he rewards them.
Great news on Hartley, better player than Thompson and cheaper as well...

Bit of irony there surely, you could just as easily argue that Hearts took Hartley from obscurity and he repays them by moving to Celtic!

I used to be of the opinion that Maloney was indeed as Lynchbhoy said "a headless chicken" but his performances last season were excellent and suggested he had matured into a fine player. Might well have benefited him to stay in Scotland for another season or two though before trying his luck down south.
With McGeady and Riordan though will Celtic really miss him?

The last couple of weeks have been disappointing for Scottish football IMO. After a few seasons when the rest of the clubs were putting it up to the Old Firm we have seen Rangers sign Thompson from Hibs with Brown likely to follow in the summer. Theyre also taking Gow from Falkirk in the summer and probably McDonald from Motherwell too.
Celtic have got Pressley (albeit down to Hearts themselves) and Pressley having recently raided Hibs for Riordan. And whilst its good news for Celtic to have lured the Hibs Youth Coach its not so good for the Hibees!

Then when the Old Firm dominate they complain they dont get a challenge from the rest - after stripping them off their best players!

P McConnell, R McMenamin, C McGinley, M McGee, D Harte, D Carlin, M Penrose, M Murphy, S Cavanagh, R Mulgrew, O Mulligan, C Cavanagh, R Mellon, C Donnelly, E McGinley.

Few surprises there and I thought we might have seen more than 2 debuts. Never been convinced about McGinley at FB and hoped a younger man would be given a run of games there in the league. Mugsy hasnt been the answer at no.11 in the past and would prefer to see him in the full forward line. Big day for the likes of Carlin and Murphy to prove they are worthy of a start.

Tyrone / Re: Tyrone Club Football and Hurling

Apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere but great news from the BBC site that Brian McGuigan is hoping to be back in Tyrone colours by the end of next month

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/northern_ireland/gaelic_games/6313155.stm

Im sure it will take time and games for him to find full fitness but very encouraging that he feels close to returning. Hopefully he will get back to his best.

I reckon Tyrone'll win too, but they'll not get in easy with Dublin looking for a bit back after last year's fiasco!

Tyrone will be going into the game without Conor Gormley, Brian Dooher, Brian McGuigan and Stephen O' Neill (and whats the situation with Jordan?). Thats the spine of the team and All-Stars the lot of them. As such Id say the priority for Tyrone is to go and put it up to the Dubs and see how the young lads on the panel cope with the Croke Park experience. Would be a big surprise if Dublin didnt win (although a great boost for Tyrone).

Not too sure about the new residents on Ramsay Street with the exception of the PE teacher, had a young blonde PE teacher flashed her knickers at my class there would have been uproar.

Zeke must be about the biggest gimp to ever walk the Street, well overdue a good kicking.

GAA Discussion / Re: Mickey Harte is infallible?

Can ye Tyronies not have dissenting opinions?  I find it hard to believe that none of ye are capable of independent thought on this subject, c'mon, at least one of you can admit that Harte has been a w**ker about this??

Of course Mickey Harte is fallible, he's made plenty of mistakes down the years. On this issue though Im not sure what the great fuss is, seems to me that a few people who dont like Harte are just using it as a stick to beat him with. The idea that he is doing it because of his ego or to get publicity is ludicrous, he just wants whats best for his team and if he feels he is being wronged he will speak out.
He's released the established players (whose capabilties he knows all about) but wants to have a look at the younger ones. With no competitive games before the new year the McKenna Cup is his only chance to do that before the league (and Tyrone have to play in front of a big crowd in a high profile match in their first league game). I very much doubt Harte has broken any rules, he isnt that stupid. Going "against the spirit" of the competition sounds more like it but ultimately Mickey Harte's job is to get the best possible Tyrone panel for the months ahead and if he as to go against the spirit of the McKenna whilst this isnt ideal if it has to be done then fine. He's hardly a lone voice either, its clear other managers around the country have grave doubts about the issue.

Did Gormley not break his ankle?  Anyone know what leg McGuigan broke?

Think McGuigan suffered a double leg break below the knee on his left leg. I was shocked to read the article about Brian's plight and that his life was actually in danger at one point, incredible.
Im in no position to be able to confirm Eugene McGee's story but its very worrying and like somebody else said I would be surprised that Mickey Harte wouldnt have stepped in to get something sorted out in the way of compensation. Mickey was certainly involved at the beginning in making sure Brian got the best treatment possible. It would be interesting to hear from him, the county board or Club Tyrone to see what their version of events is. If McGee is right this is really disapointing.
Just hope Brian can get himself back playing again at the level we're used to, a fantastic footballer and a joy to watch.

At the age of 18 playing my first full season I rattled in 1-2 from the half forward line in a local derby match (I like to think of it as a Brian McGuiganesque performance ;D). That was as good as it got unfortunately.

There is also question marks over Tyrones strenght in depth after last season.Only O Neill, Dooher, Cavanagh, D Harte, Gormley, Mc Guigan and Mc Menamin are of any worth

Thats not fair to be honest, no team in Ireland could have lost as many key players as Tyrone did this summer and not suffered, its not about strength in depth when youre missing so many leaders.
Surprising also to suggest the likes of Philip Jordan, Eoin Mulligan, Enda McGinley and Joe McMahon are not of any worth. Im sure there are plenty teams who would love to have these worthless players on their team ;D

declan mc crossan still plays for his club, and is still a great player.  Good athlete and brilliant left foot. Opted out of tyrone panel at start of 2004, got married and built a house.  Hes pretty young yet, dont think he would be older than 26/27

Im not suggesting McCrossan is anywhere near the most naturally talented player Ive ever seen (though incidentally he would be by some distance the best player I personally ever played against, had to mark him once in a Scottish Universities match) but its a shame he opted off the Tyrone panel a few years back, he could have been a key man for many seasons and would probably still make it onto most county panels in Ireland. Unlucky for him that Philip Jordan came along at the same time.

Hard to say who the most naturally talented player is because you dont really know who has the natural talent and who has worked their backside off to improve but suppose Canavan must be a contender and I love watching Brian McGuigan play when he is at his best. Donnellan in 98 too, fantastic.

Im a Scot of Tyrone extraction.
Dont have a club as the nearest GAA club is 120 miles away but used to play university and a wee bit of club football in Scotland.
Best memory was the 2005 AI final.
