Title: Laois Senior Football League 2022
Post by: Junior Ex Laoistalk on June 06, 2022, 03:28:47 PM
The 2022 League has reached the knockout stages, some very interesting games coming up.

The football leagues this year will be played under a new format whereby in the top three divisions the top four teams after the first seven games qualify for a winners group where they will play each other. From that series of games the top two will progress to a final.

The bottom four will play each other with the bottom two relegated. Points from the first seven games do not carry over to the second phase.
The top six divisions in football are all eight-team competitions while Division 5 is split out into four groups with 19 teams entered in total.

In the first three divisions there are two teams promoted and relegated – but only one team up and down from Division 3 on. From Division 3 on, the top four go into the semi-finals with the eventual winner promoted. The bottom team is relegated.

Not sure if this is a good idea or not, the finalists will have played each other 3 times before a winner is found.
1st game was in the 8 team league format, 2nd game in the top 4 team format and 3rd game in the final.

How could you dare question any decisions made within laois GAA given our phenomenal intercounty success.
I bet kerry wish they took a leaf out of our book and halted club championships while the county team is still in the championship.
Our senior championship structure makes wonderful sense also.

Graigue vs Josephs this evening.
Should be a really good game. I'd be leaving towards Graigue as I think they'll have a better spread of scorers but Josephs will be solid and have good runners from deep.

Great game tonight with some lovely scores from both sides in the first half and very close into the second half but some very dodgy refereeing decisions went against Graiguecullen and ruined what should have been a showpiece final.
Good win for St Joseph's who looked strong in most positions and hard luck to Graiguecullen who on another day with another referee might have pulled of a win which with their great league run would have been well deserved.

Hard to read much into the league . A lot of players missing at different stages of it and some random performances along the way . Hopefully it leads to a more competitive championship.

I reckon there may up 5,6 genuine contenders . Port , Graigue, Joseph's , Portlaoise and perhaps Killeshin . Stradbally could be one to watch . There first game against Killeshin is massive.  Interesting to see how Park will do . Looked by far second best a couple of weeks ago against Ballyfin but there performance last weekend against the same opposition was impressive. Courtwood will be difficult opposition in two weeks but it'll be a good indicator of where Park stand at this level .

League is an odd thing. For instance, Ballyfin rarely do much in the league but are very consistent in the championship.
Think Ballyroan Abbey will also do better in championship than a fairly average league campaign.
I think Joseph's will probably make a better impact on the championship than they did last few years but doubt if they are potential winners.
