GAA Discussion / Tommy Walsh bound for Oz
November 11, 2008, 10:52:59 AM
From realfooty.com.au.

The teenager voted Ireland's best young Gaelic footballer will train with St Kilda later this month as he weighs up a possible move to the AFL.

Forward Tommy Walsh, 19, was last month named the Gaelic Athletic Association's young footballer of the year, so the news that the amateur Ireland could lose him to the AFL is expected to cause consternation in his homeland.

Player manager Ricky Nixon, who helped convince the forward to try his hand at the Australian game as part of his Irish talent-spotting program, acknowledged as much.

"It probably won't make people in Ireland too happy, but he's coming out," Nixon told Melbourne's SEN radio.

"I can't tell you if he'll want to play or stay or if he'll be good enough but he's definitely one of the best talents that I've seen."

Walsh played for Kerry in this year's All Ireland final.

Nixon described him as an athletic power forward "in the mould of a Wayne Carey type" and said he was the most exciting prospect of the large group of Irish youngsters his recruiting team had looked at.

"We pulled off a pretty big coup ... he's previously resisted every attempt to get him out here," he said.

He will come to Australia in a fortnight and train with the Saints for a week, although that does not rule out other AFL clubs recruiting him.

Nixon's program has resulted in several other Irish youngsters currently training or intending to train with AFL clubs.

Conor Meredith and Niall McKeever are currently with Richmond.

Next week, Meredith will train with North Melbourne, while McKeever will spend the week with the Saints.

Another Irishman, James Kielt, will train with both the Kangaroos and St Kilda in coming weeks, while Walsh and compatriot David Moran will try their hand with the Saints.

But Nixon said his systematic recruiting scheme was no reason for the Irish to be afraid that their youngsters would start heading to the AFL in droves.

He said the more likely outcome was that those who came to Australia would be better prepared and suited for an AFL career because they had been more thoroughly tested.

Under AFL rules, if a club reaches an agreement with an Irish player, the club can nominate them ahead of the rookie draft, guaranteeing they are able to recruit them to their rookie list.

GAA Discussion / New rule re:extra-time
October 10, 2008, 01:01:25 PM
I dunno if this has been discussed already but I just saw this new rule mentioned in todays times. It says that all senior intercounty championship matches up to the semi-final stage will go to ET if the scores are level at full-time. It was in the context of Meath v Dublin next year and how we will never see a repeat of the 4 match saga in '91. This came from the special congress in January apparently. I presume "semi-final stage" refers to provincial semi's, does it?

GAA Discussion / Bogey teams
September 29, 2008, 04:23:07 PM
I was in the pub the other night when the subject of Meath v Wexford in Dr Cullen Park came up. One of the lads said he knew in his heart when Wexford got the deficit back to 5 points that they would win. Simply because, as he put it, "They've been our bogey team for the last 5 years."
Now when I say bogey team, I'm talking about a team that doesn't appear better than yours on paper, but for some reason when you're drawn against them a little voice in your head goes "F*CK!"
We'll keep it to the last 10 years or so.
So, what counties do you dread having to play?

GAA Discussion / Leinster team of the 90's
September 20, 2008, 11:14:53 AM
The 90's were a bit of a golden age for Leinster football. Meath won 2 All-Irelands, Dublin won 1. Meath contested the final in 90, 91, 96 & 99 and Dublin did likewise in 92, 94 & 95. Kildare also reached the final in 98. Hard to pick a Leinster 15 for that period as there were so many great players around but we'll have a go anyway. I have deliberately omitted a number of players who played the bulk of their football in the 80's as they only would have played one or two years into the decade. I've also tried to pick players who consistently did the business so no 1-year wonders.

1. John O'Leary
2. Cathal Daly
3. Darren Fay
4. Mark O'Reilly
5. Paul Curran
6. Glen Ryan
7. Martin O'Connell
8. Niall Buckley
9. John McDermott
10. Trevor Giles
11. Tommy Dowd
12. Graham Geraghty
13. Ollie Murphy
14. Kevin O'Brien
15. Charlie Redmond

Now remember we are talking about 1990-1999. ;)

GAA Discussion / Some perspective
August 18, 2008, 12:09:08 AM
The Dubs get slaughtered by Tyrone and their season is over. A few weeks beforehand, Wexford get ABSOLUTELY slaughtered by Dublin and now they're in an All-Ireland semi-final. I've no doubt, if Wexfords season had been over after the Leinster final there would have been all sorts of talk about the footballers not being there, Jason Ryan needing to go back to the drawing board etc. Now the county is on a high and they have a real shot of reaching an All-Ireland final. But because the Dubs are out of the championship now they are apparently in some sort of abyss from which there may be no return. How many posters here think their county would beat Dublin if they played them in 2 weeks? They will probably lose Whelan and Sherlock from that team and Fennell is a straight replacement for Whelan. I honestly don't understand why people are so quick to write teams off. Only one county can win it each year lads. Does that mean everyone else was just wasting their time?

GAA Discussion / Ridiculous warm-up routines
July 20, 2008, 07:21:10 PM
Lads, this nonsense of 30 lads converging on each other like a gang of women trying to catch the flowers at a wedding is a bit much. Monaghan (hilariously yesterday) and Westmeath are two notable offenders. Anyone else do it? Someone could lose an eye. ;)

Meath scored 4-3 today. When was the last time a team scored more goals than points in a senior intercounty championship match?

Michael Shields has jacked it in at Carlton and is coming home. I'd imagine he'll be available for selection for the remainder of the championship. Gave homesickness as his reason for leaving.

This is a little bugbear of mine. The physical stats given for players in matchday programmes and the Sunday Game are all over the shop. According to TSG, the Clare centre back is 6 foot tall and 11 stone. I was 11 stone making my confirmation FFS! Is it that hard to get accurate info?

GAA Discussion / Hypothetical scenario

Your county lose next weekend (or whenever) and go into the first round qualifiers. Which of these 3 teams already in the hat would you be MOST afraid of meeting in Round 1?

(No offense to Kildare, Ros and the rest).

Have to say I think the new format looks very promising. I'd say Tohill has great fun playing with that virtual computer game! I also like the cut of Coman Goggins jib as an analyst. Safe pair of hands. Hopefully this means we'll be seeing less of that waffler Tommy Lyons.

GAA Discussion / That stupid ad!
April 23, 2008, 05:58:17 PM
That shagging entertainment.ie ad is driving half the country demented. Every forum on the internet seems to have it going BOINNNNNNGGG!!! in the background. I'd like the good people at entertainment.ie to know that I will never ever visit their website as long as this ad is plaguing the interweb. Most annoying ad since that gimp in the budweiser commercial and his high-pitched shrieking like a girl. I know I could just turn the sound off but what if I want to listen to music? Who's with me!!

GAA Discussion / The death of the full back
April 14, 2008, 04:50:11 PM
Just reading the various match reports from the weekend. Would it be fair to say full back is the problem position for most teams? If you try to list out the top notch FB's it becomes a bit of a struggle after 4/5 names (apologies if I left out anyone obvious). Most counties seem to have adopted a stop-gap approach to the position at the moment. Is it not as important anymore to have that dominating presence at the edge of the square?

Darren Fay
Kevin McCloy
Conor Gormley
Barry Owens
Graham Canty (?)
Francie (injured I think?)

Any of the Dubs know what went down over on ResDubs? It's offline until "people learn to behave themselves." I wanted to see if there was any chat about the Meath-Dublin minor match.

Anyone watching this gobdaw on RTE 1? He should have his Meath citizenship revoked (along with Hector). The deal is he has to cook for the rebels and animals on All-Ireland final day. I'll carry on watching after the break just to see if some langer starts roaring abuse when his chips are too slow.

McEneaney says ban forcing players to play soccer
16 November 2007

Louth football boss Eamonn McEneaney has slammed the GAA's edict that November and December should be free of intercounty challenge matches.

Louth were refused clearance by Croke Park to play Monaghan at the opening of Naomh Malachi's new grounds this weekend which spawned a request from four of the Louth players to play soccer.

"I'm not scaremongering by saying this," McEneaney declared. I've had requests from four players to go playing soccer because they have no match this weekend and won't in the months ahead. I can't stop them.

"I feel it's restrictive practice. Fellas are mad to play football. Not every county lasts until August and many a club has wound up competitive action by then too.

"We have players in that situation and they're mad for action. Imagine a golfer being told the he can't play a round of golf in November and December.

"Players play football because they enjoy it and the facility should be there for them to play if the games can be arranged."

Dunno how long it's been there, or if its been discussed already, but why is there a link to those robbing tout bastards needaticket.ie at the top of the page? Advertising All Ireland final tickets for over €500 and they haven't even been issued yet. W*nkers. >:(
