"Back in the day", his punishment would be for the rest of his career (short as it would be)to be kicked up and down every pitch in the land without any sympathy from a referee.

As one of the comments after alluded to if he had dived to get the pen and rolled around like a little girl he would have been congratulated. The world has gone mad.
