For the record I don't believe homosexuality is wrong. I believe homosexual acts are wrong.

Taking refuge in the rhetoric of the Christian Right (which is neither).

The same (Catholic) Christian Right that for the last 90 years and more has systemically covered up the systematic buggering of little boys (and girls). Ironic eh?

But sure as long as they preached the right words in the puplit you're grand with it.

That's almost like one of the deadly sins in reverse-

It's OK to think Gay but it's not ok to act Gay.
It's not ok to have lustfull thoughts but it's OK to have sex.

that's not a bad idea actually, it wouldn't surprise me to see it become a reality.

As for all this talk about afl paying gaa clubs, firstly, it's a really stupid idea.  Secondly, how could the payment of money recompense a club for losing a potential star player - is that what the gaa ethos has become?

I would guess the reason for the idea would be to stop or atleast slow down the recruitment of players by the AFL rather than finance clubs.

Its time taht we as a nation grew up a bit and gave citizens free choice. Why should the church and state collude to protect "catholic Ireland" at all costs and to the discrimination of certain sections of its people. Women have abortions for a million different reasons and having known ssomeone who went down this road its a decision that is not taken easily or lightly. During the last referendum the state and church used all their powers to get a NO vote. Meanwhile, members of the church buggered and raped childern every day, while the governemnt members filled their pockets through corruption. Neither of these agancies have the "Moral Authority" to tell its citizens what to do. Free choice for every woman in ireland is long overdue.

The church's treatment of women and children is not a case for abortion. Abortion is a seperate issue than can be argued without religous interference although few will let that happen.

Abortion should not be legalised to punish the church it should be about the the family as in the mother, the child and the father. After that arguments are secondary but society needs to deal with this one way or the other.

Over 100,000 Irish women have had abortions in England since abortion was legalised there in 1967.   I presume you are not a woman.
I imagine you have never had an unwanted pregnancy or been raped or been abandoned by the father of the child. You probably don't have money worries wondering how you would feed and clothe a child if money is already tight. Perhaps you have never been a married woman with an existing child with learning difficulties or a chronic illness and have not been told by your doctor that another child would have an elevated risk of same.
Abortion is a reality.  Get over it.

Abortion is also used because people change their minds about being pregnant. Some parents force their daughters to have abortions against their will. Some people have abortions because they are embarrased at being pregnant. Some women are forced into abortion by their partners. The list goes on and on. All this needs to be legislatedd for. Abortion as an option regardless of the personal situation of the mother is wrong.

Abortion on a casual basis is pure evil, it is the tool of the fascists. We must not have it in this country unless the life of the mother is in extreme danger. This does not include mental problems.

I think the problem is that Irish law doesn't allow for this. I think it's a widely held view that an abortion is legal in Ireland in this case but in reality there is no law allowing for it. I'm relatively new to this whole debate and from what I heard yesterday it will get even more confusing as the debate goes on.

I Evil Genuis got the ruling of the ECJ spot on.

I'm anti abortion in almost all cases but when I hear of people heading across the sea for abortion I stumble. If I accept that it does happen and it will happen and that pro-choice will never go away and will always be catered for I wobble a little. I hate to think that we are sending people out of the Country to do this. Either it's illegal or it's not and if Irish citizens are breaking Irish laws abroad then it should be treated as such. If not then it should be facilitated for in Ireland. It's a hear no evil see no evil approach that is sending Irish women away to do this. It's nothing more than a modern version of something you'd see in the Magdalene Sisters. It a disgracefull position for this state to take. It's about time we decided one way or the other.

Don't you mean Kempton Park?  ;)

It is yet another major difference between north and south, but I think with work, this is one that can be overcome.

No way. It's one of the few things I have left >:(

Just talking to the woman about this today. Was listening to the wireless and ad for Leopardstown came on. Big race on stephens's day ??? The Saint has been dropped day and as someone else pointed out they can't say it properly. Rather than call it St. Stephen's Day it's called Stephens's day. I had her practicing saying St. Stephen's Day which she did well when she tried but eventually reverted back to Stephens's Day

Now this was a far bigger and genuine reason for Bertie to be called on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfjGSfuSQpA

I thought the problem was him talking about the "Republic of Ireland" which he was very clear about 8) ;)

So how is the GAA going to stop players going if the AFL clubs don't pay?
I am still looking at this thread for an answer on this question???
But me thinks there is no answer.

How can you stop them going anywhere and why would you stop them?

We need to constantly improve the GAA and give the players an attractive option. If they decide they want to go somewhere else then it doesn't really matter if it's the AFL or the moon.
