most of the board wont know what youre talking about !!
i just about remember and im no spring chicken !

Spring Chicken George.
And Fiddler... epic series! He played author Alex Haley who wrote a book about tracing his roots to a slave Kunte Kinte was captured in Africa and handed his story down the generations. Was great scene when he went to the village... a lot of the story since been discredited as untrue. Great series all the same.

Milltown Row2

Amazing series that we all as a family sat and watched. Think it was remade recently but I may have just watch the original

Was a time was one screen everyone watched and 4/5 TV channels so all well remembered Hill Street Blues, Kojak etc... now everyone has their own screen and such a vast choice of boxsets and TV channels... more is less maybe.

That's it. Can still remember what night different series were on and seemed everyone from that era watched same programmes each week.

Armamike

Yes he appeared on Roots just at the end of the last episode, as Alex Haley. That was my first memory of him and always linked him back to that.

Roots was some show at the time!  Around 1979/80.  May not have been totally accurate in terms of the family tree but for a kid it was good to get some understanding of what slavery was - it wasn't taught much at school.

Chicken George - now there was a character!
That's just, like your opinion man.

Milltown Row2

Chicken George wow! There's a name that gives you a memory chill

Was a powerful depiction of the savage level of cruelty of slavery. Some unforgettable scenes: I remember another character Fiddler mentored Kunte (who was given name 'Toby' by the slave masters).. and Fiddler died and Kunte says to him: "Now you know what it is to be a free man"... jeez! over 40 years ago and I still remember that scene and line ..
That series captivated huge audience across the world..

If I remember it correctly they cut the foot off Kunte Kinte for running away.

Great show that still sticks in the mind 40 years later.

That's right. The slave master or watever he's called pointed the axe at his foot and then his privates to which Kunte Kinte squealed.. so off came the foot. Where was he going to run to anyway? 🤷
Just seen as subhuman. Was a story (slavery) needed told albeit the details of those characters may not have been wholly accurate.

I'm trying to remember  other names from Roots , but   I'm  mixing up  characters from Fried Green Tomatoes (Big George, Idgy Threadgood  et al). I'm damned if I can  remember Roots and I watched the  whole series

Yes. And also the shock of seeing John Walton of The Waltons fame (which was being aired at the same time ) being the worst of the baddies

They can't really pull winter heating for pensioners and then be seen to centrally fund a GAA stadium.
