On the member in the north who contacted the 17 year old why exactly were they referred to the PSNI? If the messages were "inappropriate" but not sexually explicit then what was the crime that could have been committed? All this cloak and dagger stuff from SF is very confusing.

I'm asking you though.
I'm not a member nor privy to their internal doings.
A leading member of the party says he wasn't treated properly by  a"clique", another says she was undermined and forced out.
Would you as a fan of said party not be getting concerned?

So you're saying you don't know what SF did wrong in the handling of the Brian Stanley issue?

Seems the issue is that SF got the complaint last October but decided only to pursue it 8 months later on the week of the selection process. Appears very much like a hatchet job to oust Stanley.

According to Gavin Reilly, Mary Lou is going to name him later in the Dáil.

Last October? From what I can see, they got the complaint this year, verbally on 26th July (as confirmed by Stanley) and officially on 2nd August, and the disciplinary process was underway from that day. Not quite eight months.

Rossfan, you have a great array of spokespeople.

Former Seanad member and Lord Mayor of Belfast, Niall Ó Donnghaile, who left SF last year citing "health issues" sent the inappropriate text.

Hatchet job by who though? There is no heir apparent in Laois-Offaly.

Can some one do a concise 'explain it like I'm 5' on these goings on?

SF is a successful political party and therefore its opponents will try to damage and hinder it at any time.  Like the Labour Party in England the media hold them to a different standard than other political parties.  I'm not sure the the current tribulations are the result of a master plan.

However I mighty surprised that none of the hard nosed Belfast based journos broke the Niall Ó Donnghaile story at the time.  I'm sure they all knew?

The 17 year old was a male and it transpires that Ó Donnghaile also sent inappropriate message(s) to a male adult too.  Mary Lou's explanation as to why SF didn't inform the Oireachtas about the reason for his resignation sounded a bit lame TBH.  Neither Harris nor Martin are in the Dáil today it seems.

I'm sure she has been on the phone to oul Gerry as past few days.

As someone who dodged a lot of bullets in his time, literally and metaphorically, he would be well placed to try and guide her through the current sh*t storm.

While there's no doubt SF get a harder time from media north and south, all these seem to be self-inflicted.

Certainly the only reason Brian Stanley is a story is because he brought the subject out in the open. And no one is sure what happened, or even if it's criminal at all.

Niall O Donnghaile is a story because SF themselves came clean; they previously put his departure down to health, now it's suspension due to inappropriate texts to a 17 year old.

McGonagle is a story because two press officers resigned when it became known they provided references for someone who at time was under investigation for paedophila (who SF had already suspended) since convicted.

There's no sense of any investigative journalism that went on here. SF delivered the stories on a plate. All have in common offenses that some in SF tried to keep internal, when they would have been better served to be truthful from the start. They could do with a fresh new leader but probably won't.

Per MLou....
Somebody was traumatised by Stanley's behaviour in October 2023. They complained to the Party in August (or was it July) 2024.
Possibly to stop him getting the nomination?
Stanley got his retaliation in last weekend and seems he complained about the complainant.
SF then referred it to the Gardai.
