I've noticed this in a couple of games recently and in my day (OK, 25+ years ago it was a foul) but in football are you allowed to throw the ball up in the air with one hand and hand pass it with the same hand (in the same fashion as a hurling hand pass)?? I noticed Dermot Earley do it yesterday and a fellow old timer beside me cried foul.

Noticed that myself yesterday, thought it was a foul.

Thought his other arm was being pulled back though which maybe is why the ref allowed play on?

I wouldn't like to second guess what was going through O'Conamha's head, pints!!  If he was being held back it was a free to Kildare.  I saw this happen in one of last weekend's games without a free being given (can't remember the exact incident) and was just wondering if it was now allowed.

I'm no referee (how dare you!) but I can work the internet and read  ;)

From the Official Guide Part 2:
Important Terms and
Definitions - Football
and Hurling

7. HANDPASS When in possession, the ball
may be struck with the open
hand or fist - provided there is
a definite striking action, with
the striking hand not being in
contact with ball before
delivering the strike.
In a two-handed pass, the ball
may be struck off a holding
hand by the other hand, or
released and struck. In a onehanded
pass, the ball shall be
released from the hand before
being struck by the same hand.

The releasing of the ball, when
used, shall be considered an
integral part of the hand/fisted
pass.

The rule was changed a few years ago I believe. Things have moved on boys! Now it seems to me that Referees don't even bother to read (or implement) this one anymore:

RULE 3 - SCORES
3.1
...
Exceptions
A player on the team attacking a goal and
who is in possession of the ball may not
score: -

...
(iii) a point with his open hand(s), but may
score a point by fisting the ball.

How many flicked or handpassed points did we see over the weekend? I do remember seeing a handpassed point disallowed in an inter-county match a few years ago on TV but maybe the abuse referees get from the ignorant has put them off implementing the rule! Time it was changed.

Interesting, I've seen frees given when players only use one hand, although common sense would tell you that a player will generally be using one hand as the other one is being pulled back, which should be a free to them.

THere's been dozens of points scored with the open hand in this years championship.

Thanks for clearing that up young fella me lad!!  Still doesn't look right to me but I suppose it does make common sense to allow it
