Hopefully we should have too much for Westmeath at home. Defeat like the other day can see us react one of 2 ways, we could go out and blow them away or we could go out and struggle. Definitely not a team to be taken lightly. Should be a fair crowd in Armagh for kt

A win and it should be 3rd at the very least in the group. Did draw with Westmeath in the last meeting three years ago, a match Armagh led 1-12 to 0-7 at half time.

Really can't see complacency being an issue in a group where if we did manage to lose this we would be putting ourselves under extraordinary pressure. Wouldn't it be nice to be going to Omagh with points on the board & hopefully Tyrone under a bit of pressure from a mauling in Galway.

Good game to get going again with the added advantage of it being at home. Don't think a match 3 years ago bears much relevance to this years match. We have 3 years in division one under our belt now and are considerably better than then. If we get the win under our belt early then we are simply playing for positioning in the group. The fixtures are in the order we would have wanted given that we could be playing Tyrone after them facing a tough trip to Galway.

I'm sure the Westmeath ones are glad this isnt the other way around eh... https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/armagh-gaa-fans-accused-of-horrendous-behaviour-at-westmeath-match/35971686.html (https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/armagh-gaa-fans-accused-of-horrendous-behaviour-at-westmeath-match/35971686.html)

It's a game most in Armagh would expect us to win.  Armagh do very little without making it a challenge though.

Similar result and performance to the first 3 games would be nice. Don't think they are any better than Cavan or Down.

They are not better than Cavan or Down and are going to get it tough in that group, especially after Galway and Armagh beat Tyrone and have them needing the points on the last round.

Their results this season would suggest that they are probably inferior to Cavan and on a par or worse than Down. They finished below both in division three though they did beat Cavan to win the Tailteann Cup last season. Their manager left them after that and I think they appear to have gone backwards since then based on results.

The biggest danger is that we could be a bit flat after the Ulster final defeat although we had a similar scenario facing into the Antrim match having suffered relegation and it was a good match to get back on the horse.

Yeah agreed that's my fear as well, Westmeath a good bit better than Antrim and Sunday was a lot more devastating than relegation. Heslin a very good player for them

Good game for Armagh to get going again after their devastating defeat in the Ulster final. I hope they go for a more positive attitude after dragging Derry down into an arm wrestle at Clones. They have some really good attacking players and they should try to play to those strengths.

It needs to be way more subtle than that. Not saying WUMs aren't allowed but if you want to get some traction then you need to show a bit more guile than that. Poor effort.

Will be interesting to see the crowd in attendance on Saturday evening given the demand for Ulster Final tickets  ::)

Two weird comments about Armagh fan numbers in this thread.

Armagh will bring a very big crowd to this. Naturally it won't match the demand of an Ulster final.

Armagh will get over this one easy enough. Fans or no fans. Nice fixture to get rid of any hangover from the Ulster Final.
Can't see them being troubled by Westmeath.

Regardless of this fixture, there will certainly be a scramble for tickets for the next game in Omagh.

The GAA should have offered 3 game packages for tickets. A lot of people will want to go to Tyrone and a prospective game against Galway as well as this one. If they had sold 10,000 3 game packages in Armagh it would have ensured an Armagh crowd in Omagh.
A sunny day should bring out a crowd and it may be the start of a hard group for Westmeath. Even Donegal showed that a bottom of Div 1 team is still well above a Div 3 one.

A three game package would have been a good idea alright.  I am for the game at the weekend. To bring my family to all 3 will cost 180 quid, excluding travel costs.

Hard enough for Armagh supporters to pick themselves up again after the Ulster final never mind the players.  But a big crowd this weekend would be a good boost for the team.

Was Crealey injured for the Ulster Final? I presume he was as didn't make an appearance after starting the other championship games.  Would expect him to come in if available alongside McParland, who found the going tough last day but think performances outside of that warrants another start.  In the forward line, not sure the situation with Hall who despite his critics was doing rightly of late.  Whether Campbell starts or not is probably the big question for Geezer.  Aidan Nugent has looked badly off it since his injury in any of his substitute appearances to date.

Crealey was warming up all game so not sure
Don't see soupy starting tbh
This could be a tough enough game as Westmeath midfield better than our midfield
But we need to be winning well to get some positivity back .
Agreed re Nugent ( think he has been  struggling all season )

McGeeney didn't look happy with the referee at the end. Maybe he'd need a look at his own team first.

no need for that, ref was trying to get off the field through the crowd and mcgeeney was determined to get some sort of point across, not the time.

Shades of the league encounter in 2020 when Armagh was lucky to draw and today lucky to win by one. Big hangover from the Ulster final penalty shootout loss. Play a rested Tyrone away next weekend good luck with that.

Firstly, Westmeath were excellent, they will be absolutely gutted, they were the better team today, they'd the nous and the smarts of a D1 team.

I'm sure I'll mellow in the coming hours & days as we've obviously had to overcome the Clones penalty loss trauma, but god we were pathetic. Maybe that is too strong a word, we were seriously flat & look knackered, a lot of players were hiding all day imo. Murnin, Mackin & ONeill showed leadership & bottle to get us over the line. There were some seriously bad performances and I'll leave it at that.

I was walking home after thinking is putting in collosal effort against Tyrone & Galway going to be even worth it??

We got the points but some serious underperforming
They said we could have been5 up after ten minutes
Thought Rian, Andrew, forker we're excellent and Turbitt , mc partland and Mc quillan contributed
Putting it bluntly out kick outs were desperate !!!

Desperate is perhaps too kind to the kickouts, suicidal might be better.
Terrible display. They underrated Westmeath, I think they were not in the right frame of mind and perhaps management had a hard training session this week with a view to subsequent games and not this one.

Otherwise, big crowd on a sunny evening. Westmeath deserved more support, I expect there were only a couple of hundred there, they may have thought that their hurlers were a better prospect. They deserved to go home with a draw at least.

Strange also as I thought Armagh got the majority of the decisions. Open to correction as it's hard to be certain, especially watching on GAA Go but a couple of the scored frees for Armagh in the first half were absolutely ridiculous calls.

Overall he seemed like a ref from the 90s, giving frees always to the player in possession when under any bit of pressure all over the field, ignoring steps and allowing frees to be taken many yards forward from the infringement. That was for and against both teams

The kickouts  in the final minutes of the UF cost Armagh dearly.  Yesterday, it appeared nothing had been learned as Armagh continued to give away possession, especially in the final minutes again when the game was there for the taking for Westmeath.

Very impressed by Westmeath, they deserved the points last evening.  No. 14, John Heslin, a special talent.

Armagh seemed leggy and lacked energy,  especially after Rian missed the goal chance early on, it seemed to go down hill from there.  Might have been the UF hangover, or maybe they'd done a big training session midweek incorrectly expecting to beat Westmeath handy enough.

Would worry that the tax of last nights game will further impact Armagh next Saturday in Omagh, but hopefully not, hopefully the lads recover well and are ready to give it a lash against Tyrone.

Either way, it's all about jockeying for position in the table, most likely position 2 or 3.  Win one of the last two games and it's a home tie in the Q/F prelim.  Lose both and it's away to a potential big gun.  As someone mentioned earlier, I'm questioning whether the effort to win a tough group is worth it, given the straight passage to the Q/F and a 2 week break, either way, squad depth is more crucial now given the additional games.

Hopefully the person who took unwell after the game is on the mend, thoughts with him and his family.

Having now watched it back my view hasn't changed.  I thought both teams were very poor and neither deserved to win.  I think the praise of Westmeath is condescending.  They may have deserved to beat Armagh last night but I think that's down to how bad Armagh were particularly tactically however when the pressure was on Westmeath wilted. The goal they scored came from a lucky bounce then they conceded a simple goal, they missed several chances in the last 5 to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and they failed to put away that very leggy and poor Armagh team through a combination of poor decision making and tactical foolishness.  Even on the winning score, Westmeath left Rian O'Neill completely unmarked in about 30 yards of space.  Madness.  Maybe I am being harsh but I just thought the match was such low quality last night.

I can't see either team giving Tyrone or Galway much to worry about

Armagh kick-outs were awful. Westmeath always seemed to be able to a free man for the kick-out. Why do Armagh outfield players not do more to become free?

Was it complacency from Armagh or were they flat from the Ulster final?  Probably a mixture of both.  They really never got going in the game.  When behind by 2/3 points, how can you afford to let the team in the 2nd half keep the ball for such long periods.  Absolutely no change to push up and force the issue.  It was like they had all the time in the world. When Armagh did turn the ball over, they repeatedly seemed to lose the ball in transition.

Kick-outs all day were a disaster.  We did have players making good runs.  They were available but the ball is kicked over the side-line. Even at the end.  The short one wasnt on.  The whole Armagh pack in midfield realised this and shuffled in unison to one side of the pitch, and Ethan somehow kicked it down the middle, where they had all moved away from.  A bad day at the office.

A fortuitous goal gets Armagh back in it, but no way that will be good enough next week.  That being said, i dont expect the same next week as there is always a different buzz about facing Tyrone.

Westmeath were better on the day and will be very disappointed i'm sure. If there were more than 300 of their supporters at the Athletic Grounds i'd be surprised. They deserved much more support than that.
