And you will get one closer to your required date. 8.15 am is a good time to check. Newtownards usually easiest to get one !

If you are going to Newtownards, take the GAA flag off the car.

Quote from: tonto1888 on September 22, 2024, 01:00:57 PMJust booked my MOT for earliest date I could get. January. Car insurance runs out in December. Will I be able to ensure the car before I get my MOT?
I think you'll be uninsured for the period between Dec and Jan. I have a similar issue but only for a few days as my tax is 30th Sept and MOT on 5th Oct but car is insured (unless the bastards have some small print about it being void without tax).

No MOT does not invalidate insurance.  You will be committing an offence of no valid test certificate however PSNI are currently operating a policy of not prosecuting provided you have a test booked and your vehicle is otherwise road worthy.  Taxing a car without a valid MOT is not possible though,  In that scenario you can email DVA and they will find you a spot somewhere within 5 days

Riddle me this, a pal of mine reckons he's ok to drive. Basically SORN'd a car while out of the country. He didn't receive any refund which apparently you get sent which covers whatever tax was left over. MOT has ran out while he was away, has a date next week. He came back during the week and has been driving about.

Car has to be either  taxed or SORN'd.

I take it he hasn't  taxed car since he returned? If he hasn't, it is still SORN'd. So , he can't drive it.

He wouldn't be able to tax it without a valid MOT

No in that case he will be prosecuted if driving. The PSNI would likely incorrectly prosecute for no insurance as well. He is by law entitled to drive the vehicle to and from any MOT appointment but nothing else. He will also need information DVA of his intention to un worn the vehicle.

That's exactly what I thought. He thinks he's still taxed, despite the car clearly showing up as SORN'd!

Aye he will be caught as soon as he drives within sight of a police car and the computer in the police car goes buck mad.

While you might overlook the end of tax, for a SORN you actually take an action to declare the car off the road and it is unlikely that any excuses would be accepted.
