No need to rehash the severe criticism of the refs in both of the Mayo v Kerry games.  I'm starting to wonder if any one  ref could have done a good job under the circumstances, with pulling and dragging, nasty off the ball stuff etc.

I know I have brought this subject up before but surely with a ref in each half of the field there would have a better chance of controlling the game, making the correct calls  and stopping a lot of the nasty stuff that goes unpunished.  I know there is concerns about consistency etc and linesmen and umpires are supposed to keep an eye out but seldom do.

I thought I would pit a poll on top just to see if anyone feels the same about this...

Another example today of why a clock should be introduced, that way there is no confusion around how much time is left.  I can't understand why they won't do it unless it's to give teams a chance to draw so they can make money on a replay.

I would also suggest that the clock is stopped in the last two minutes once the ball is not in play and at any time at the refs discretion for injuries etc...

Some examples of where the clock would have avoided controversy.

1) ai final kerry v Dublin 2011, cluxton takes about a minute and a half to kick the winning score
2) Connacht final 2010, Donnie Shine lies on the ground for about a minute and a half in injury time with no additional time added
3) last years Ai final with killian o'connor
4) Today

I have asked for a clock in the past and today I think is the icing on the cake.  I know the traditionalists will vehemently disagree but I think the right thing to do is bring in the clock starting with the league next year.

Well we are still alive and obviously have a very tough assignment against a wounded Cork team.  I would imagine we are huge underdogs and deservedly so, but you never know - we tend to produce our best results when no one expects us to perform.

We certainly can't afford 14 wides like we had against Limerick that's for sure.

If we get destroyed at midfield like we did against Galway, it will be a very long day - we need to be more competitive in this area and McDonnell and McIntyre have done well against Wicklow and Limerick.

It's great to get to the last 12....

Well now that the mayo v Roscommon game is in the books we can see what the views are on Sligo v Galway.  I have not heard much from either camp but would expect Galway to be big favorites based on their London trip.

We have a decent record against Galway lately but I'm sure Galway will be out for revenge.

I hear Marren might be injured which would be a big blow as I recall he scored about 2-6 the last time we played Galway.

Any updates or opinions on either team would be appreciated

GAA Discussion / GAAGO where are you?
May 03, 2014, 02:46:36 PM
The championship kicks off tomorrow and those of us in the US would like to know where/when gaago will be offering us games and more importantly how much it will cost.
If the gaa are serious about accommodating the overseas fan I assume they will offer the season pass for less than the $200 that we paid last year.
I haven't seen a website or anything yet that we can sign up for- does anyone have any info on what galago will offer and when it will be available?

I would be interested to see if opinions have changed.  Personally I think it has improved the game and eliminated a lot of the pulling and dragging and cynical fouls.  There also have been some controversial black card decisions but overall I think it has improved the game and I for one am now a fan of the black card.

After 7 league games, most people would have an opinion one way or another.

GAA Discussion / Premium sports fiasco
September 08, 2013, 10:19:25 PM
Not sure if any of ye tried to watch the game overseas on the internet but neither the minor match or the senior match were watchable as the sevice was frozen and we could only see a few mins in total.
Some very annoyed customers tonight i paid $200 for the season and others paid $30 for the mAtch.  They better get it right the next day or there will be a war.
Very disappointing -

I might as well get the show on the road for this one.

Mayo will be deservedly hot favorites after the demolition of Leitrim today.  4-20 is a serious score against any team, so we will have our work cut out for us to keep it respectable.

We're always better as underdogs, and all the pressure will be on Mayo.

Does anyone know what Eamon O'Hara's status is?  Will be available for selection, or is the knee still bothering him.

Three weeks to go, hoping it's a good final.  I assume Mayo will select Roscommon as the venue.

GAA Discussion / Galway v Sligo -June 9th

Seeing as the game is only 5 days away i thought i would see what the opinions are on this game.  Galway will deservedly be strong favourites and are flying after the demo job on Roscommon.
Tough assignment for us, Kelly should be back, im not sure about o'hara.

Listened to the game on the radio and it seems to have been a superb performance from Sligo.  Antrim put up a good fight in the second half but Sligo responded magnificently.

Great performance all over the field -full back line were superb, half backs played good, Excellent performance from midfield, gilmartin had three points from play.

Forwards were unbelieveable - I think we had 16 points from play.  Excellent performances from McGee, Kelly, Brehony and costelloe all superb, O'Hara had a huge came when he came in.  Special mention to Stephen Coen who responded to being dropped with three excellent scores and had a huge game.

Hard luck to Antrim but the better team won on the day.

GAA Discussion / my mistake
May 26, 2007, 05:02:29 PM
my apologies for the derry down mixup - I posted the spreads after a few jars in brussels and wasn't paying attention.  I will delete it now.

Scoring system is 1 for a correct win
2 for predicting a draw
3 for a bonus pick win
-2 for a bonus pick loss

GAA Discussion / GAA SPREADS - Final Reminder
February 02, 2007, 12:35:10 AM
Just wanted to give you all a final reminder that if you want to enter the football competition you need to get your entries in by 3pm on Saturday....

The site is located at www.gaaspreads.com.  If you need to register all the info is contained on the menus on the left side of the page.

For those of you new to this lark, this is a competition we have for the league and championship, we place a spread on each game to try and make it more difficult to predict the winner so for example the spread on Sligo V Tipperary (sorry folks) is Sligo by 1.5 points.  You should only select Sligo if you think they will win by at least two points and cover the 1.5 point spread.  Each game correctly picked gives you one point with zero for an incorrect pick.  You can also pick one game as your bonus game where if you pick the winner (against the spread) you get three points instead of one, however if you pick the losing team 2 points are deducted from your score.

So far we have 174 entries which is excellent.  Good luck to all................

GAA Discussion / sligo stars return en masse
December 15, 2006, 06:46:34 PM
How are ye all, long time no speak.

Been very busy with a new job but thankfully things are cooling off a bit.  Curious to see what the opinions are for sligo in 2007.  Looks like we could have a strong (and hopefully healthy) team.  Interesting article from hogan stand below.

I hear the team have been back at training for the last 6 weeks.  Bid difference to last year...

No fewer than seven players, who opted out of the Sligo football squad in 2006, have returned to training in recent weeks.

Former Sligo Rovers captain Michael McNamara was first to report back for duty, and he has now been joined by Jonathan Davey, Johnny Martyn, Brendan Philips, Patrick Naughton, Brian Curran and Kieran Quinn in what is a huge boost for manager Tommy Breheny.

Breheny oversaw a big improvement in the Yeat County's fortunes in a short period of time this year and will be hoping to maintain that progress in the coming season. Having avoided Galway and Mayo in the early rounds of the Connacht championship draw, they will fancy their chances of reaching the provincial final and perhaps ending a 32-year wait for Nestor Cup honours.
