This Thursday I am scheduled to have surgery to repair a deviated septum, I have been plagued with congestion for years so I finally went to see a specialist last week and he recommended that I get surgery to repair the septum.  I was wondering has anyone else had this surgery and what was the out come in regard to breathing, sleeping, quality of life improvement etc. afterward.

No but good luck and probably best to stay out of the oops, a balls up of an operation thread...

To late for that Pints but thanks for the best wishes, the responses have been over whelming so far!

One of my brothers had to get his septum re-aligned as a football injury was causing him chronic sinusitis.
That was many years ago and he has had little or no problems with his breathing since.
The procedure was fairly quick and painless and, as far as I can recall, the effect was immediate.
I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.

I had it done a good few years ago. The worst part is getting the packing removed from your nose afterwards. I had to have it done twice as I developed a blood clot, which wasn't nice. I can now breath through both nostrils. Be prepared for a noseful of almighty snatters for a few weeks/ months afterwards.

Did anyone check your pollops? I was also plagued with congestion, a small head cold would mean I couln't breathe through my nose for as many as three weeks. Doctor said possible deviated septum, specialist ordered MRI and said it was pollops. I am on a nose spray for life but it has worked wonders for me.

Best of luck with the op.

I've had a cold/runny nose since I was about 8.  Had some problem with my adnoids then and got an operation.  Think they might have left a scalpel or something up there.

But seriously, think Im diagnosing myself with sinusitis or something.  Whats the symptoms of pollops?

Had that operation done before Christmas, sore as f**k for about two weeks after. Breathing and sleep are much better but the wife doesn't reckon it's done anything for the snoring. Tell you what though, don't Google the procedure before you go in - there are some horrible websites out there giving all the gory details, photos and all. If I'd have seen them beforehand I definitely wouldn't have went for it.

Lots of snoring, constant blocked nose nothing more than that.

Nah, that's actually not too bad - you'll be sleeping for that part. It's the yuckie part after with the gauze on your lip and the 3 inch splits your nose that's the rough part.
