Quote from: majestic on January 10, 2024, 04:11:24 PMConsidering getting a new car. Any recommendations for an SUV type, budget is around 15K? Was looking at the VW troc, but know next to nothing about cars and generally consider it pot luck.

Wife changed a CRV for a 2019 Mini Countryman lately, it was in that budget roughly. Looked at the X1 & X2 but she liked the extra finishes that came with the mini and it feels sporty in comparison to others. Bigger than you think too.
Another friend  went with a Seat Arona (a t-roc in different clothes) and it seems like a decent motor but cheaper than the VW.

Seat Atecas seem like a good option too, next one up from the Arona & a bit bigger
Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

215k miles had took its toll on my Qashqai last Autumn so went for a Seat Ateca ,very happy so far with it so far, its  more spacious than the  Nissan and doing 55 mpg as well

I have both Skoda Karoq and Kamiq which are the Ateca and Arona equivalents. Very happy with both but don't be under any illusions that t-roc, Arona or Kamiq are SUVs despite the profile. Once you're inside them they feel and drive just like a hatchback. Think of them as basically a slightly roomier Golf.

Seeing so many Peugeot 3008s on the roads now.  They'd surely fall into this bracket

Same bracket as the Ateca and Karoq. Very good cars.

I've heard quite a few stories on the reliability of the 3008. Plenty of electrical problems.
All 3rd hand stories though.

Old habits die hard when it comes to French cars.

Peugeot, Renault and Citroen, along with Vauxhall, Land Rover and Mini, are car brands I'd avoid like the plague.

Would ye whist

Would never touch a Peugeot ever again, most unreliable car I ever had and I owned an old Skoda

Any of you men here owned a mid 10s BWM 420/430D? And is it actually true cars are cheaper in England?

Not much wrong with Skoda. They are generally very reliable cars, well spec'ed and brilliant value for money compared to more prestigious badges.

Everyone knows someone who has had an issue with a car regardless of the brand or model. At the end of the day it's a machine and machines can give trouble regardless of brand.

Depends how old he's talking about. Certainly since the relaunch under VW they're routinely acknowledged as one of the most reliable car makers around.

Significantly cheaper. But depends on value of the car. If your looking a 5-6k car then by time you factor in shipping it home not much difference. But if you're looking at a 20k car then savings are greater.
Car prices are coming down now. There's value to be had.

I'll probably need to change Mrs Tbrick18's car this year, a 15 year old Ford Galaxy that has been one of the most reliable cars I've ever had. It's worth nothing so have been putting off changing it as it keeps going, but she has my head turned about getting a new car.
Best value for money reliable 7 seaters about?

I have a 2017 420d xdrive, the 5 door one (grand coupe). I haven't had any issues so far apart from the constant call backs because of the EGR problems. They finally replaced the whole unit just before Christmas though. I like it, handles really well and it's nice to drive.
I have a mate who has the 3 door 430d which is 2014 and he had a massive issue with it last year, 2 grand problem. Can't remember the actual problem though and it was high mileage. He stills loves it though.

From what I'm told, in newer cars 2K is not a massive bill. It's the norm for any kind of issue.
I had to put injectors in a van recently, cost well over 1K. Know a guy who had an A8, suspension problem cost him nearly 3K.
Seems to be the norm now which is madness and part of the reason why I've been putting off buying.

I moved jobs recently and they have an Electric Car scheme you can sign up to...basically cycle to work for cars. Covers maintenance, insurance, tyres etc which is very appealing....but i hate the thought of electric.
