Protestants opting out of Magee

Catholics outnumber Protestants by four to one at Derry's Magee site
The University of Ulster has admitted it is having trouble attracting Protestants to study at its campus in Londonderry.
Catholics outnumber Protestants by four to one at Derry's Magee site.

The university's pro-vice chancellor Jim Allen said it was a disturbing trend.

"It is worrying and the university has highlighted that," Mr Allen said. But he pointed out that the situation was better than a decade ago.

"Ten years ago it was 90/10. So we are beginning to win that battle," he said.

He said Protestant students who attended Magee were "very positive" about the university and the city.

This is a serious problem, which needs to be addressed.

What is the percentage divide in Derry City and where do all the students travel from to attend the University?

It is not a serious problem. They have a choice.

Everything these days is about 50/50. It doesnt matter what religion they are. If you took the population west of the bann it would not equate to 50% Catholic 50% protestant. Nor is it in Derry.

No doubt we will have Gregory Campbell on the evening news giving out about it and claiming its SF ethnic cleansing in operation.

I wonder what the catholic/protestant split in in UCD,DCU,Trinity etc.      The point is IMHO, its a nothing point, expect to use a stick to create agro

According to the last census derry city is about 78% catholic.
The cityside, where magee is located is even higher % catholic.

There you go. So its reflective of the area.

Im sure there are Technical Colleges around  newtownards and the like that have a similar trend.Only the majority being protestants.

Should the title of this thead not be Protestants opting IN to Magee, if ten years ago 1 in 10 was Protestant, and now it is 1 in 5?

Its a slow news day lads.
Agreed doesn't seem to be much of a story and what little there is doesn't seem to be anything to worry about. Apparently tomorrow's headline is 'Loads of Prods on the Shankill'

"What about fishing boat spotted in Portavogie" or "Sheep found living in Glens of Antrim"

Changing the topic slightly....I can't remember in my time at Uni that any protestants were elected for the Site VP positions in any of the University of Ulster Campuses.
