Fella in work says a hash brown is the best part of a fry. ??? A lot of people have very different ideas on what is in a proper fry. They are almost all wrong.
Bacon and sausages are mandatory.
Select away!
Wouldn't have tomatoes, mushrooms or pudding anywhere about it. Fried egg and it must be runny. That will do for a sauce if the beans aren't available.
No to hash browns too.
Tomatoes are a waste of space on a plate (is tinned tomatoes an English thing??).
Vegetable roll while nice to have isnt mandatory. Same for has brown.
Puddings a must have.
What about toast??
What is soda farl??
I'm assuming some kind of bread?
I'd have an auld pancake in there as well if it were available!

love a half tomato fried on the plate. My perfect fry (bread wise)would have soda , fadge (potato bread) and toasted pancake. Maybe even a wee bit of toasted wheaten if about.
7 people have already voted for beans. That's an example of everything that is wrong with this board right there. How can you debate with people who think beans belongs on a fry?

I love beans but never on a fry. Every weekend I get a fry pack from the shop and it's bacon, sausages, veg roll, black and white. I would get a soda, mushrooms and pancakes. Fried Pancakes in a fry are amazing, with crispy bacon and runny fried egg....hmmmm....reckon that could be tonight's dinner!!!

Vegetable roll is a fried / grilled bright pink mess of very dubious origins.
Soda Farl :o :o
V V surprised some people have never heard of it.
And still no toast on the options? What is wrong with people?
Wheres the f**king sausages!!
SAUSAGES AND BACON ARE MANDATORY.
Vegetable roll is beef sausage meat with spices and usually parsley for the veg. Looks like a small burger. It's a northern thing along with beef sausages and soda farms.

The hash brown that you get in the US are class. All diced up. Is that what you even call them
No Chips?
Sausage
Egg
Potato Bread
Soda (Small)
Black Pudding
Mushroom
Tomato
Beans.....divisive, I'm happy if they are there but if no beans, it must be Brown Sauce for me.

Should have wheaten bread on the list. Toasted, obviously.
Pancake on a fry I thought was an English thing?
I'm glad to see no one has descended to fried bread yet. You'd be as well just getting a bottle of oil and pouring it over the plate.
Bacon
Sausages
Egg (not hard but not runny either)
After the above 3 i don't really care what else is on the fry, they're the 3 main ingredients of a fry no matter where u get it and the only 3 that i care about. Soda is nice but can be a bit dry but with above 3 in it and a we drip of HP Brown sauce...that's the ticket

Pancake on a fry I thought was an English thing?
Black and White pudding are a must as is a soft fried egg, hash browns are nice but not essential. If it's an evening fry rather than for breakfast then would have to have chips with it. Beans are like hash browns nice, and completely acceptable part of a fry, but not essential.
A good cut of brown bread smothered in real butter also an excellent addition to any fry.

"I ordered a fry, not a swimming pool".
Rashers/bacon, sausages, black and white pudding, fried egg (not touching), vegetable roll, potato cake, soda bread and then the piece de resistance.
Oh, and it needs to be fried in lard.
I do like an Ulster Fry best.
Bacon, sausage, egg, white and black pudding, soda and slim. Nothing runny apart from the egg.
The Irish got it all wrong swapping the bread out for mushrooms and tomato.
The English got it badly wrong by tossing out the bread for beans, mushrooms and tomato. Especially the tinned tomato as mentioned above. Its only purpose in life is for pasta sauce.
Any form of potatoes is for greedy fat bastards.
While I am partial to a hash brown or two, they probably have no place on a proper fry either. Ulster is right.
Beans are disgusting at breakfast.
You are allowed a pancake for today only.
I thought an Ulster Fry had to be made from the Ulster Pig

In our house they're over easy. The missus insists on it after me giving her a partially cooked sunny side up about 10 years ago. ::)
I like the really crispy, paper thin streaky you get in Americay, but at home it's always back bacon crispy enough to eat the rind.

Potato bread is probably the best thing to come out of the north
Anyone who has a beef sausage over a pork sausage belongs with the people who put beans on a fry
You really should try Portadown's gift to the culinary world, potato apple bread!

Ulster fry
Eggs
Sausage
Bacon
Soda
Potato bread
Fried pancakes
Veg roll
Mug of tea
Far nicer than a free state fry.
And all in the soda farl bar the tea and pancake. Breakfast of champions. Living in Dublin the sody is badly missed.

Pancakes have no place in a fry. Sausage, bacon, soda, potato bread, black & white pudding & a fried egg with red sauce.
Minus the red sauce and you have her.

I'd swap your white pudding for mushrooms and take HP sauce but that's a tidy feed. Mug of tae.
Ah breakfast- my absolute favourite topic
so this is one of those things where the only fry we should really be talking about is the ulster fry,
Its the superior sort of a breakfast...
also- tea- must be a mug of tea from a tea pot.
Coffee with the full ulster is just an abomination, and I drink 4-5 coffees a day, but I know their place
I know it's a separate topic- but any thoughts on the ideal filling on a Belfast Bap?
sausages, bacon and egg (just a wee shade past runny) with a bit of brown sauce if all is going well.
None of these things ever go well in other countries.
and also- how can americans not do sausage rolls???? Pigs in a blanket just don't cut it.
and thoughts on best brand of pudding- white and black?

What is soda farl??
I'm assuming some kind of bread?
Have I really just read that!!!
Never heard of it. Not something I've come across either in Donegal or Dublin.
Went into a chippie in Bunbeg once and asked if they did Bacon Egg Sodas. Girls said they had Fanta or coke.
Don't worry - that passes for a sensible conversation in Donegal.
Steak, eggs sunnyside up and breakfast potatoes is another tasty breakfast.
Runs a fry very close
I like to finely chop a raw onion and throw it over the fry also.
Tastes great with the sausages and rashers.

Haggis and square sausage are great in a fry.
Square sausage and veg roll are same thing only different shape
Fried egg, pancake [like a soda but getting it fried correctly so that it isn't too dry always seems be beyond most establishments], and fadge. I don't mind mushrooms and can take black pudding.
Beans, veggie roll, sauce etc are all no-nos and when they are on the menu I always swap them out for an extra egg, or preferably 2. Or 3.
Cup of tae always with a fry.

Nobody slim in Belfast, with all these feckin fries being chomped.

Never realised such a thing existed as part of a fry. Do you just horse a tin of tomatoes into the pan or what?
Behold.

Items on the list can come and go but as well as the Sausages and Bacon, the following are mandatory - at least in Mammy's house
Sausage x 2
Thick Bacon x 2
Fried Potato Bread x 2 halves diagonally cut
Fried Soda far x 1 half - again diagonally cut
Eggs, scrambled hard.
HP sauce
Honorable mentions for the following additions if required
Good sauteed mushrooms
Beans (popular in British breakfasts stateside, which sometimes is as close as an Irish exile can get)
Black and White pudding
Not alot of love for the scrambled egg, a must for me!
Worst things about down south hotels is their lack of soda farls and potato bread for Breakfast.
