I wonder what do people on here think of trade unions in modern day Ireland. They no doubt protect lower payed people in the workforce. But when it comes to well paid employees i.e Hospitial consultants, Aer Lingus Pilots and so on, all they want to do in my opionion is obstruct progression towards work targets and efficiency. Its no wonder that our compedetiveness is now in the spotlight, due to old and in-efficient work practicies that it seems trade unions are happy to maintain..I was at a lecture given by a S.I.P.T.U leader in U.C.D about the 2005 health and safety act a couple of weeks back, he mentioned the word compensation 46 times in a two hour lecture. It was a rant about the greedy employer and how the poor employee was down trodden and any opportunity to get money through compensation should be grasped. Lots of people walked out half way through. For me it sums up todays trade union activist,50 years behind the time.....For the record i am a member of trade union, as i have to be to get onto certain building sites in Dublin.

According to the indo. today, travellers are been "racially discriminated against"becuase they are not allowed to park their vans and caravans in the car parks around the shrine.Boulders and height restrictors are in place to stop large vans and caravans entering some of the car parks around the shrine. According to Rose Marie Maughan of the Mayo traveller support group, the travellers are been made "unwelcome and degraded by this unchristian, discriminatory and racist act". Rose wants Mayo County Council to build a halting site so that they can pull in and use during the annual novena, but locals fear that this site would be used all year round. However Local senator John Carty said the travellers are not in Knock to practice religion but to sell carpets and furniture. Senator Mc Carty also said that if travellers wanted to use the car parks they should pay for them like everybody else.

Same problem every year and following Knock they will all head to Murrisk to "climb the reek" while parking in the car park for a couple of weeks, leaving behind a mess for the council to clean up.

Mayo / The Power Base of Mayo Football.
July 30, 2007, 11:58:55 AM
Following our exploits in the All-Ireland this year ::) and the performances of the clubs in our championship, I wonder has the power base of Mayo Football moved from one part of the county to another. North Mayo Clubs have in the main supplied the main trunk of the team over the past few years and previous to that again it seemed the main trunk of the team were South Mayo players. But now with some retirements from our county teams it seems the main trunk of our teams will be from East and west Mayo. This is a bit of a sweeping statement i know, as other clubs from other Mayo have supplied more than their fair share of players too. I am intrested to see what other posters on here think...

General discussion / Galway Races
July 19, 2007, 09:57:02 PM
I was down in Galway today on businessand one of the places i had to visit was the new stand in Ballybrit. It is very very impressive and is a great addition to the arena as a whole. But unfortunatly there was only one topic on the agenda today...that was that if this rain keeps up, the meeting as a whole is under threat as the course is at saturation point and it can not take much more rain over the next 10 days......what a disaster for Galway if the festival has to be postponed especially following the water scare earlier in the year...

General discussion / This is getting out of hand!
June 09, 2007, 12:35:29 PM
from findmadeline.com it leads with the tag line:

'Madeleine's Fund : Leaving No Stone Unturned '

Now accepting paypal apparently they have 'earned' to date:

£713,927.81.

f**k me, that amount of money has me seriously considering leaving any future kid home alone in an unlocked house.

Now how exactly is all this money helping to find Maddie? if they could detail their expenses as to what this is being spent on i wouldn't be so supicious, at the moment it looks like it is being used to fly the McCanns around 1st class and stay in 5 star hotels.

Just watched the documentary on the 2007, 6 nations rugby champoinship. It followed the irish team for the championship. The passion in the team is unreal and the physical side of the game is something else. Impressive t.v. Our soccer team have a lot to live up to i think...

I just watched him hanging with Richard Corrigan. He has to be the most annoying person ever to grace television. Why does he have any celebrities on the show if he doesnt let them get a word in.Is he that insecure that he always has to be their new best friend after a couple of day. Also i just watched a clip with him in France with Trevor Brennan and he is walking like John Wayne for some reason....TWAT!!!!

GAA Discussion / Ciaran Whelan's Return.
March 02, 2007, 06:30:12 PM
I read today in the Indo. that Ciaran is due to return to the Dublin squad for the next round of the league. Was he injured?...the reason i was wondering is that he was as "in good shape" ;) in the chipper in raheny the night of the French rugby match in Croker. His buddy was going round telling everyone"thats Ciaran Whelan,he plays for the Dubs!" It was very funny. But i thought that these kind of nights wouldnt be allowed at this stage of the year? Even our club players at home are off the beer since the start of Feb.

GAA Discussion / The Scoring Goal.
January 21, 2007, 09:02:41 PM
I was at the F.B.D match today and two men there were talking about Roscommon playing in to the "scoring goal " in the second half. I go to quite a few matches of different grades and every pitch seems to have one of these goals. My own club has the"college goal" and Castlebar has the "Bacon Factory end". Both of these pitches are quite level so my question is what makes a "scoring goal"?

GAA Discussion / Medical Standards at club games.
January 06, 2007, 06:33:16 PM
I was talking to a lad who plays football for my local club last night. He was telling me about how he broke his Shin in a Mayo intermediate game the Saturday before christmas. The incident was accidental and as he put it himself the conditions were such" that a milk bottle shouldnt be left out, never mind two teams of footballers". Following this lads breaking his shin,he had to lie on the pitch for FORTY MINUTES before a doctor or ambulance arrived. The game was into the second half when this occured.i have heard since the reason no doctor was at the game was the host club had to 100 euros for his attendance, and they decided to chance it.  We have had a really successful season at intermediate level this year,so a back log of league games has developed...Since the begining of December the club has to deal with 2 disclotated shoulders, one serious and this leg break. We are a rural club and have a small pick of players and for us to lose 3 good players like this is a blow before the new year begins. It seems the more successful a club is the more it has to play catch-up with league games ect.regardless of the conditions or the safety of players.I love the G.A.A and most of what it stands for but its no wonder lods go and play rugby ect. when they see GAA players treated like this.
