Title: List your top 15 from 2001-17 -Survey closes on 28th April 2017
Post by: Owen Brannigan on April 23, 2017, 04:52:16 PM
OK, we are still waiting for the 2017 championship to begin, so we need something else for amusement this week.

Taking the idea from the video* of Peter Canavan posted by O'Neill in the Top Forwards thread for a new best team survey.

Please list your top 15 players (not from your own county) who have played since the qualifiers were introduced in 2001 as if it could be your fantasy team for the 2017 championship. Here are the rules:

1. Put the name your county at the top of your list

2. Do NOT pick players from your own county (to avoid obvious county bias)

3. List your team of top players from 1 to 15 no subs

4. Please give the full forename and surname of your players to help with the collation of scores

5. Do not list the county of the players in your list

6. Please do not add numbers to your list

7.  Each of the 6 lines will be counted separately to decide on the overall best team

I've tried to go for players who played a good 6/7 years at least after 2001.

Playing for your county has no bearing on your ability. I've seen plenty of forwards who didn't play county football despite being much better than players who regularly played for their county.

That request was added after I saw the numbered lists.  It is a bit of a pain to get rid of the numbers before collation.

Leaving Canavan, O'Neill and all the other quality inside forwards out was difficult but McConville's club form and his consistency gave him the nod. Workhorses like Dooher, Galvin and Flynn were not needed in a team with this much class.

The forward line is flexible with Murphy and Cavanagh capable of drifting in and out, same with Cooper, McConville and McDonald all capable of rotating. Declan O'Sullivan is a deep playmaker.

Was surprised how many people went for Barry Owens and how few went for Tohill. Tohill retired in 2003 but I suppose he played his best football in the nineties.

Also noticed how many players of the year don't even get mentioned.
Can't understand how Canavan doesn't make most people's team yet he came first in the best forwards list. Interesting how players like Mugsy & S.O'Neill get mentioned before PTG.
The game has changed so much the last few years that players like McManus would have been player of the year and an all star several times if it wasn't for defensive systems. Brogan was like that in his first few years before getting double marked.

* https://youtu.be/m4Zh0CE-lzA (https://youtu.be/m4Zh0CE-lzA)

Are we supposed to be picking the 15 best players that were actively playing during that time period (even if they only played their last year of inter county in 2001 for example) or their actual performances within that time-period, disregarding what they may have done prior to 2001?

Just pick a team based on players who played from 2001 onwards.  It is meant to be the best players in this 16 year period according to their positions in your opinion. I don't want another thread started about me because I am making any demand on a poster to set out a team of his/her choice in a particular format.

The reason I didn't go for Canavan is that he wasn't at his best after 01, was still a great player but was nowhere near as explosive as he was in the 90s.

My 96-99 team:
Martin McNamara (could kick it really far)
Brian Lacey
Darren Fay
Sean Marty Lockhart
Finbarr Cullen
Seamus Moynihan
Sean óg de Paor
Kevin Walsh
Niall Buckley
Michael Donnellan
Trevor Giles
Anthony Tohill
Maurice Fitzgerald
Peter Canavan
Declan Browne

Would be a match for any other team of an other generation.

I love all this shite about Canavan being past his best by 2001. He first played on a Tyrone team that won a championship match in 1994 and whilst Tyrone were decent in 95 and 96, they were muck thereafter until 2001, when his red card arguably cost Tyrone a first All-Ireland. So one of the greatest players ever had an effective "great" career from 94-96. Nonsense. Canavan's contribution to Tyrone 01-05 can't be underestimated and he should be an automatic choice for every team in this thread.

Except mine.

Interesting how many people choose Jordan before Conor Gormley. Is it for his attacking skills as I think most Tyrone fans would say block was one of our best ever defenders.

I laughed at Champion The Wonder Horse's post as I totally agree Canavan was still a great player from 2001-2005 despite his injuries. He made his debut for the seniors in the league in 1989 and championship the following year but had to wait 5 years for his first win in Ulster.

Good to see none of your Derry bias though influenced you over players like S.Cavanagh, Stevie O'Neill and Peter.

I know its all about opinions and Gormley was superb but I would have Jordan on any team I picked. The most consistent performer on the Tyrone team throughout that era. I genuinely can't remember a game when I though Jordan underperformed and he really upped the ante in the biggest games - the 2005 final and 2008 semi final being particular highlights. I also remember being at a league game in Killarney around that time and a fairly weakened Tyrone team went down and beat Kerry, Jordan gave an absolute masterclass that day. Plus he upsets a lot of Armagh ones which is an added bonus!

Was it just because he was from the Moy and went to school in Armagh, a bit like why the Derry wans aren't too fond out Dooher.

I wonder if the Armagh and Derry ones were to give us a top 5 of all time hated Tyrone players who would be in it.
Would PTG be No 1 though Mugsy must be well up there too.

Jordan certainly was Mr Consistency for a long time and he nearly always seem to get up for a point or two.

I didn't particularly like some of Dooher's cynical fouling, it was nothing to do with where he's from.

And I don't hate any Tyrone players. There's a difference between thinking a player is a pathetic cheat and hating them.

I'd have Gormley every day of the week over Jordan. In fact I have to say, for me Gormley is the best defender in the past 20 odd year, he could do it all, played right across the back line wherever he was needed and was Harte's go to man for the big job that had to be done in our defence. Think his best position was definitely at 6.

I say this without bias but I'm shocked that he has only made a few teams in this , he must be the most underrated player of his generation, conversely I'm also shocked to see Marc O'Se in so many teams. If ever there was a case of a guy dining out on his family name then it's Marc O'Se, he was a decent player but no way was he a top 5 corner back of his generation. His two brothers were absolute class but Marc was a steady, reasonably dependable player but it was telling that most Kerry managers asked Tom O'Sullivan to do the big jobs for them.

I find it interesting how different people get more annoyed by some players over others. I would have expected a lot more dislike for Ricey and Gormley as both were tough man markers who often bent the rules as much as they could yet a lot of fans get more annoyed with Sean Cavanagh for "going down easy" as Brolly would say.

Hate is a strong word. Can we say disliked Tyrone players??

Probably only Sean Cavanagh comes into that bracket. Maybe Davey Harte. Smug

I respected Canavan, Dooher, McGuigan, O'Neill, Gormley, Cavlan even Ricey. Great players.

You couldn't hate Mugsy either. Sure he's half Maghera himself!

What the hell did Davy Harte ever do to annoy anyone?

Read McConville's book

It's things like this which people don't like about many Tyrone players:

Whatever the facts about the accuracy of McConville's statements there, the slabbering from some of their players that I know of is reprehensible. Yet so many are quick to justify it as part of what it takes to be a winner.

I'm really surprised how little Brian McGuigan is featuring - I thought he was a top class play maker in that Tyrone half forward line when they were at their peak in the 00's

I forgot about him to be honest

Was it just because he was from the Moy and went to school in Armagh, a bit like why the Derry wans aren't too fond out Dooher.

I wonder if the Armagh and Derry ones were to give us a top 5 of all time hated Tyrone players who would be in it.
Would PTG be No 1 though Mugsy must be well up there too.

Jordan certainly was Mr Consistency for a long time and he nearly always seem to get up for a point or two.

McMenamin
Mulligan
Cavanagh
Jordan
Whoever made that block on Stevie on the 03 final

Jordan for me was the best wing half back of the last 20 years. A man of iron. Rarely wasted a ball.

A serial cheat who should be ashamed of some of his behaviour on the pitch.
