Title: 2023 Laois Football League - Divisions 1 and 2
Post by: Junior Ex Laoistalk on February 17, 2023, 05:06:46 PM
(From Laois Today website:)

Laois GAA have published the full list of league fixtures ahead of the start of the 2023 season.
The leagues have undergone something of a rebrand with the removal of Division 1B and 3B.
This has resulted in a streamlined system of Division 1 down to Division 7 – with 7, consisting of 16 teams, split geographically into Group A and B.

Division 1, 2 and 3 will operate on a split system where after one round of games, the top four and bottom four in each will play again in a smaller group.
The top two teams in the winners group in each Division will contest the final while the bottom two in the losers group will be relegated.

Division 4, 5, 6 and 7 operate in the traditional way with semi finals and finals following the regulation games.

Division 3 and Division 4 get underway on March 23 with all other competitions starting after that.

The top two teams in the winners group in each Division will contest the final while the bottom two in the losers group will be relegated.

This, along with the senior championship restructure  ::)
It's like they are on a mission to create the most ridiculous formats they can think of.

League format is grand. 10 games is around the right number. The spilt means there's a lot less dead rubbers.

I probably would have left the senior football championship alone alright but you also have to realise that it's the clubs themselves who are putting the formats in place when they vote them in at county committee meetings.

How is Brian Daly allowed play a league game 9 or 10 days before we Laois play Wexford? Not disagreeing with it by the way but are all county lads playing club games this weekend?

Unusual alright . He certainly needs the game time as he hasn't got much with Laois this season .

Anyone at this game ? Heard it was very one sided and Joseph's were impressive but one of there supporters let the club down by attacking a Ballyroan player after a mass brawl ?

O'Dempseys and Killeshin drew in the Old Pound. Poor enough game. Both team extremely short from last year's team.

Stradbally quite good Friday night but O'Dempseys look to be in trouble with only 6 or 7 of the county final team togged.

Ah yeah hopefully. A few lads will be back but unfortunately a few won't either. Having a few county players is a hindrance rather than a help.

How are Stradbally going SFSC? Great to see some of them on the Laois minor team, Laois as a county needs a strong Stradbally, Portlaoise etc. It would be great to see a big area like Mountmellick have a few representatives

They looked very well balanced. No stand out guys just all pretty honest. I suppose Eoin Buggie would have been one of the better lads on the night (at least I'm sure it was him!)

Port, Bally Abbey and Josephs safely in top 4. O'Dempseys or Portlaoise will take the other spot.
Graiguecullen, Stradbally and Killeshin in relegation group with either Portlaoise or O'Dempseys.
Heath, Ballyfin and Courtwood all safely in top 4 in Division 2.
Last spot between Park Rath, Clonaslee and Emo. Rosenallis and Ballylinan will be in relegation play offs.
Mountmellick, Killeen, Ballyroan Abbey second team and Arles Kilcruise going well in Division 3.

Division 1

There is one round to go in Division 1, and only one of the seven fixtures carries any meaning.

St Joseph's, Ballyroan-Abbey and Portarlington are in the top four while Graiguecullen, Stradbally and Killeshin are in the bottom four.

O'Dempsey's host Portlaoise on Tuesday May 30 and the outcome of that game will determine the final placings.

A draw or win for Portlaoise will see them into the top four while an O'Dempsey's win will see them do likewise.

Remaining Fixtures

Sunday, May 28
Portarlington v Killeshin at 12.30pm
Ballyroan-Abbey v Graiguecullen at 12.30pm

Monday, May 29
Stradbally v St Joseph's at 8pm

Tuesday, May 30
O'Dempsey's v Portlaoise at 7.30pm

Division 2

With one round of fixtures to go here, only four teams are guaranteed of their fate after the split.

Ballyfin, The Heath and Courtwood are in the top four while Rosenallis will battle relegation.

Park-Ratheniska currently occupy fourth spot and a win over Courtwood in their final game will ensure they stay there.

Clonaslee-St Manman's are their biggest danger as they sit a point behind and if Park-Ratheniska slip up, a win over Emo would see Clonaslee pip them.

Emo and Ballylinan still hold an outside chance but they would both need to win, have Park lose and make up a massive score difference.

If just one of them win and Park-Ratheniska lose, then Park will still finish fourth on the head to head rule.

Remaining Fixtures

Friday, May 26
Emo v Clonaslee-St Manman's at 7.30pm

Sunday, May 28
Ballyfin v Ballylinan at 12.30pm
The Heath v Rosenallis at 12.30pm
Courtwood v Park-Ratheniska at 12.30pm

Park Ratheniska grab the fourth spot in the top half of Division 2 despite losing to Courtwood.
Ballyfin did them the favour they needed by drawing with Ballylinan.
Emo miss our despite hammering Clonaslee.
Division 1 will be sorted Tuesday night when Portlaoise and O'Dempseys decide fourth spot.

I think Heath and Ballyfin will go up from Division 2. Park-Ratheniska aren't quite good enough and Courtwood's squad is too small.
Think Emo and possibly Rosenallis will stay up sending Ballylinan and Clonaslee into Division 3.

Ballyfin into Division 2 final and promoted. Any of the other three still have a chance of joining them.
Rosenallis safe and again any of the other three can avoid the drop depending on results.
Been a good league as has Division 1.
OK, mostly played with understrength teams but well structured and virtually no walkovers.

Port and Joseph's into Division 1 final. Very impressive by Port to reach final playing most of their games without 5 county players on top of missing Adam Ryan, Sean Byrne and Squirty Murphy from last year's team.
O'Dempseys down with Killeshin. O'D's were down far too many players throughout the league but are starting to get them back little by little.
Ballyfin did well to top Division 2 and probably weren't at full tilt last night allowing Courtwood to join them in the final. Kinda surprised The Heath didn't do the business in this division. They're normally a good league team.
Ballylinan and Clonaslee down. Think Ballylinan will win intermediate though.

Was in at the two finals last night port looked only OK but seem to be putting the main team back together again Joseph's quite defensive but improving I feel. Still will be port for championship I think. Joseph's could give it a rattle but will just come up short I'd imagine. Marked difference between the two finals with regard to speed and physicality
Courtwood looked good enough. Still have a few to bring back but gave a good second half performance when turning into the wind and Donoher gone off injured. Ballyfin looked only OK but were down Sean Moore neither team will be in relegation trouble (Arles Killeen looked septic the other night) but a quarter/semifinal would be a good year for either

Have to agree on the difference in standard between the two finals last night. Huge difference in the level of physicality and fitness in particular.
Port fully deserved it. Rioghan Murphy is a great bit of stuff and has to be got on board with Laois seniors. Hard to see them being beaten in the championship again this year. Joseph's were OK but they lack a couple of killer forwards.
Thought Ballyfin were very ordinary in the other game. Moore obviously was a big loss to them. Courtwood far more clinical at one end and didn't mind being cynical at the other end once or twice too. Hogan in midfield was by far the best player on the field.

Port are also missing Stuart Mulpeter, Jake Foster and Stevie O'Neill from last year. They seem to have huge strength in depth.
